  • This dish has a certain Internet renown, but is still pretty obscure outside a little town in Cornwall, England. Still, Mike was obliged to give it a try, and he offers his own spin on the classic culinary oddity.

I've always understood that the fish itself (pilchard, herring, eel, whatever) should be skinned and boned except for head and tail. While I've never had Stargazy Pie, I have had some good fish pie back on the East Coast. There were a couple of vendors in the Lexington Market in Baltimore that made some good ones.

I would give traditional stargazy pie a try were I in Cornwall but not so sure I would make it myself. I am sure I would tinker with it. I've always thought semolina pudding, havercake and brawn sounded interesting although the last I can't see anyone making in this country.

The town it comes from is called Mousehole, but it is pronounced Mowzle btw. I have family that comes from there. And star gazey pie is delicious.

The story of stargazy pie is a pie people would eat only if they were starving.
