“Moulin Rouge” was very well-received when it premiered in theaters, and was nominated for Best Picture. A "jukebox musical" is when most of the songs are well-known pop songs re-contextualized for the narrative of the story. I remember dragging my boyfriend to see this against his will and the next night when i went to see him he was blasting the soundtrack that he had immediately gone out to buy. It was his new favorite thing lol.
Like a Virgin was a mega hit in the 80s for a young Madonna beginning to climb her way to the top of the Pop charts worldwide. You should find some of her older stuff and throw in a few Music Video reactions like Like a Virgin, Material Girl, Vogue, then her Vogue cover at the VMAs for a stellar performance of it, Express Himself, and Papa Don't Preach, and Like a Prayer. The fact that you didn't connect the song means you'll have excellent Madonna reactions. And they're videos, so they take less to edit later.
The reception when this came out was a pretty big love fest, this was a big hit, you have to just embrace the energy and go with it - this is a big fantasy spectacle and celebration of love perfectly embodied by its soundtrack. Don’t overthink it, pump up the volume and revel in it. also, the musical adapted from the movie is also a big hit on Broadway for a few years now, and in London, and I think is touring the country as well so go find a production and enjoy it live.

One of the best tracks is the end credits 'Bolero'. It has a fantastic soundtrack with lots of classic hits intertwined. The orchestral revamps are amazing. It's so trippy; as though it was you who drunk the absinthe :P
Unpopular opinion: the second Moulin Rouge soundtrack is way better than the first, partly due to Bolero’s inclusion I was so happy when that album came out
Excellent reaction (even with the technical difficulties)! You should ABSOLUTELY check out Baz Luhrman’s “Romeo+Juliet” - IMHO, the best *modern* Shakespeare adaptation to date. It’s visually stunning (though sometimes frenetic, like Moulin Rouge) and has another star-studded cast - e.g. Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo, need I say more? Plus, it seems like very few reactors have covered it #justsaying #fingerscrossed
Fun fact - in Star Wars universe Obi Wan’s love is named Satine. A name I’ve only ever heard twice - this being the other Satine - also loved by Obi Wan.

All of Baz Luhman’s films have a fairly chaotic feel to them as far as the editing goes. His version of Romeo + Juliet is an absolute must watch and I’m a huge fan of his film “Australia” which is probably his most underrated. Hope you get the opportunity to see both films in the near future.
I went to the movies to see this with a bunch of mates. We had no idea what it was, but we were mesmerised by every little bit of it. The Green Fairy is actually Kylie Minogue (Padam Padam). It became huge pretty quickly. But was definitely fantastic in the cinema.
Oh my god I’m three minutes into this and so on board 😂 ewan mcgregor is one of my favorite singing voices in Hollywood, he’s so smooth and emotional. I too recommend the other red curtain movies- they’re all nuts, but so stylistic they’re worth seeing at least once. Ballroom dancing is such a lovely, wholesome, feel good classic and doesn’t get the love it deserves. I’d also recommend Down With Love- another where ewan gets to stretch his comedy chops and amazing vocals! And it’s yet another romcom that doesn’t get the recognition it should, both stylistically and for its performances.
Watching this now, too, I’m thinking I can understand why Baz Lurhman is maybe too much for some people. But no one was (and frankly, still aren’t) making big bold musicals with huge sets and crazy numbers and I will always be glad Baz got the funding to do this group of movies. I really miss old school song and dance movies and you can really tell Baz does too. Just more manically than the average musical lover
I didn't see it until March 17th of '02. I can remember the date b/c my best friend asked me to watch it with her (she had just gotten it for her birthday). I fell in love with the movie, I thought I was going to hate it. The only thing I hated is that I was crying terribly at the end. The only things in movies that make me bawl are dogs, and men crying over a heartbreaking loss (like this ending, or when Cedric's father cries out in Goblet of Fire). I rarely watch this movie anymore b/c it's just too hard for me after losing my soulmate 8yrs ago, it hits a lot harder now.
Moulin Rouge is actually a real place. Moulin Rouge is an upscale strip joint, but in a really bad part of town. There are two shows nightly, the first, with costumes and the second with nudity. Women working Moulin Rouge sometimes go to Crazy Horse saloon after the second show as Crazy Horse stays open longer. Crazy Horse is full nude and has lap dances, but doesn't have "back rooms" like American strip joints, because Europe has legal brothels everywhere.
Always struck by the similarities between this and "CABARET". The same type of characters. A courtesan/prostitute, Impoverished student/writer. Duke/ Baron money man. M/C - Theater owner. Cabaret setting. Berlin / Paris. A great film though and re-working.
For me, the movie really started when they started singing Spectacular Spectacular. I was stunned for the first few minutes. But now i love it. It's more romantic and more comedic than any rom com I know.

As far as reception, Moulin Rouge won 2/8 of its Academy Award nominations (costume design and art direction). Its other noms included best actress, picture, cinematography, editing, sound and makeup. Looking back, I agree with you that the earlier part of the movie is a little too much. I know they were trying to show how it must’ve felt for Christian to get swept up in this world but I think a lot of good music and characters get shortchanged by hurrying them along.
Can you react to "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron"? It's a story about a strong, beautiful horse with a spirit that can never be broken. I cry every time i watch it! It's a INCREDIBLE film, and the songs are so cool! But it's not a musical and the animals can't talk. 😭💔🔥
You've been watching a few musicals recently. How about Matilda the Musical next? It's not a remake of the 90s movie, its based on the stage show which has been running over a decade in the West End. The stage show is based on the book so the musical is set in England (as it should be!). The musical was written by comedian Tim Minchin and he purposely didn't watch the 90s film adaptation, he just read the book

To finish Luhrman's pseudo Red Curtain Trilogy might as well watch 1996 Romeo + Juliet, which Strictly Ballroom and Moulin Rouge! is part of.
