    I loved this so much! ☺️ Currently buddy reading Mansfield Park and we’re both really struggling with it. It’s good to know this is a bit more lighthearted and fun. Though I did really live Persuasion!

    Elinor is romantic I think, but she puts others first and so she doesn’t make it as obvious to others. She doesn’t want to distress her family, and she also keeps her promises. She has to be practical out of necessity, her mother would not always take care of what is needed. The novel says at the beginning of chapter 3, “Mrs. Dashwood remained at Norland several months; not from any disinclination to move when the sight of every well known spot ceased to raise the violent emotion which it produced for a while; for when her spirits began to revive, and her mind became capable of some other exertion than that of heightening its affliction by melancholy remembrances, she was impatient to be gone, and indefatigable in her inquiries for a suitable dwelling in the neighbourhood of Norland; for to remove far from that beloved spot was impossible. But she could hear of no situation that at once answered her notions of comfort and ease, and suited the prudence of her eldest daughter, whose steadier judgment rejected several houses as too large for their income, which her mother would have approved.” The family has minimal finances they are not able to afford a large house, Mrs. Dashwood should know that.
    Marianne is emotional, but she can be thoughtless of others. She doesn’t think of how her actions will affect her family. One example from the beginning of chapter 12 illustrates this, “Marianne told her, with the greatest delight, that Willoughby had given her a horse, one that he had bred himself on his estate in Somersetshire, and which was exactly calculated to carry a woman. Without considering that it was not in her mother’s plan to keep any horse, that if she were to alter her resolution in favour of this gift, she must buy another for the servant, and keep a servant to ride it, and after all, build a stable to receive them, she had accepted the present without hesitation, and told her sister of it in raptures.” Marianne knows they have limited finances and what is required to for her to have a horse. I like Marianne, she does care for her family, but she doesn’t always think of how things affect other people.

    I would agree with you on your rating and even if it lost its way I think Elinor was such a giant of a character that for her alone it's worth reading.And there were brilliant moments of wit like the time the little brats were tearing the hair of the Steeles😂

    • @ciarascorner
      @ciarascorner  3 года назад

      hahah agreed on the Steele's they're definitely the worst part of the novel!

    Thank you! I am back in "Sense and Sensibility" after "Mansfield Park" . My absolute Austen - favourite is "Persuasion" but "Sense and Sensibility" ,as Austen's first, is wonderful. I just found your channel and I'm pleased. I shall now read through in publication order. You have lovely editions Ciara! Greetings from Sydney!

    I am definitely more like Marianne, super sensitive, hopelessly romantic, but I am trying to be more like Eleanor sometimes ☺️

      I feel the same - though it could be more practical to have some of Eleanor's sense!

    You should keep the new intro music as your permanent intro music.
    I’m more of an Eleanor fan for sure.
    BTW, thanks to your vlogs my daughters are ‘forcing’ me to rewatch Friends and Gilmore Girls. 😋 meanwhile, I want to finish Golden Girls.

    I was in the bookshop last week and they had a huge display of beautiful Austen editions. Felt very fitting for your readalong. Sense and Sensibility is one of my least favorite Austen books, but I also haven't reread it in a long time. In the movie I always liked Eleanor better, but I don't know how much of that is because of my love for Emma Thompson. 😆

    I just love how your ☕️ goes with your 📕! My personality tends to wavier between Elinor and Marianne; I’m still a romantic but I'm also a realist. 😲 snacks‼️ Yay Downtown Abbey‼️ All aboard the Jane Austen 🚊 again‼️ As always I just love your outfits‼️ Yay ☕️ & snacks‼️
    Ps: I just finished Suns Will Rise, it was so good! Then I finished Sing Me Forgotten, and it was amazing‼️ Last but not least I got 18 chapters and 58 pages to go‼️
