You read these in a conversational way.. Not just through the character's conversing. but as though you are conversing with the listener.. It's an amazing gift you have, thank you for allowing us to share in it
Wow! No one ever put it like that. I think it’s a great compliment. I loved being read to by my mother, and at school by Mrs Umpleby (yes she was really called that) and then I read to my girls in turn doing ‘all the voices’

I listened to your reading of the story (very good btw) and watched the 70s tv version. The plot could be a sophisticated Doctor Who story as well, the visitor would be the Doctor. The story contains only one way out of the foreshadowed death. The signal man's death could have been avoided entirely if only he had taken the providential visitor's advice (the Doctor's advice) to attend strictly to the smallest details of his duty rather than to the apparition. The tv version shows the signal man totally spell-bound by the apparition, made deaf and dumb to all signals intended to draw his attention from the apparition. The visitor, like every visit by the Doctor, is ex nihilo -- no explanation as to the purpose of his visit except to be "called" upon. This interpretation is a stretch but it was fun inventing it.

as a ghost story is very underated , there is lots of great scenes , but the one that really stands out for me is the one? where they both look into the fire coal grate, thats when the story really unfolds for me.

You know I adore a good ghost story. Dickens seemed to be the "go to" for something that would compel the reader long after the book is closed. Fantastic reading, as always! I don't know if you ever heard it but there was an old radio play "Beyond Midnight" that did an adaptation of this story. If you ever get a moment I highly suggest listening to it. Just as fun as yours! ^_^
i have a dvd copied from the bbc back in time on tv bbc 4 xmas 2007. i so make sure the dvd recording is so protected in it case. i watch it at least 6 times a year because its so very brillient.
I have a copy of that as well, as well as A Warning To The Curious. The BBC always did a ghost story on Christmas Eve, when they made quality programs instead of the mass trash that all tv channels broadcast, it is supposed to pass for enjoyment I suppose. I’ll stick to the old shows.
Poor signalman with this burden but the real life lesson is to make sure to send out the messages of risk and danger and not be too concerned with own interests and amusement.

Very good story and one that I wasn't familiar with. The signal man had a premonition of his own death. Now that is a haunting concept.
