Number of fingers away on bottom matters. a couple inches can really affect the tight interaction. So input delay by some number of samples can help tie them really well if you're not perfect on placement.
Yes, all eq alters the phase (especially hpf). But your snare mics are not 180 degrees out of phase. You can reverse polarity again (on a plugin at least) after eq also, and often can get an even better phase coherence by using the eq phase shift to your advantage earlier in the chain.
Good thoughts! I think a lot of inexperienced engineers don’t realize that phase shift is happening with EQ and that’s more of the point. Wish I would have mentioned checking phase AFTER you dial in an EQ if you need to do them differently. I’ve definitely been leaning a bit back into making the individual sources sound right, and then doing heavier lifting at the group level
@@michaellewis6210 Yeah, certainly nothing wrong with any of it. I still do a lot of "top down" mixing also, just thought it was worth mentioning the idea. Your mix sounds great. In fact, that live drum mix on "Vol 1" (especially 2: 20) is ❤🔥if you did that too.
Grate job there! Besides to check the phase on OH mics, did you thought just to delay the SnT and SnB by the distance from the snare head to the OH mic? ...just to ensur an alignement between these two mics (well four... but let's down to only two). I did it and just by aligning then I could tell that I obtained kind of coherent sound since I am using the OH more as a drum kit nut only for cymbals... What is your thought on this topic? Not so pure in this issue but worth giving a try someday. Also, not applying on church with drums in a booth, but for some small gigs I tent to delay the whole PA with the distance from snare to line of PA just to gain a coherent sound of snare when listening from the front of stage when a lot of bleed is coming already from the stage.
Being in phase and in time are two different things. I definitely think it’s worth doing a bit of both though - I love just pulling up the multitracks and working everything back to the overheads. Helps keep the transient very punchy
Whoever is the creative/videographer for Mxu needs a raise
😏
MKL is one of the best in the biz. If you haven’t been to a Colony House show. Do it.
It is life changing
Michael is the best. One of the best mixes Ive heard live.
🙏🙏
MKL is legit. Got to see colony house in Columbus last year. Legit best live mix I’ve headd
Best engineer in the game
Love the bit about how tuning matters!

I'd like to know if MKL ever used Waves Submarine on kick (or bass).
@@johnmcvicker6728I’ve tried it before. It works well in some situations! More of an RBASS guy though

@@J_Walker thanks! I did that record. Come a long way since then but it’s a rager for sure
there's nothing ungodly by calling it a crouch mic hahah. Great stuff man!! good techniques.
D Live , D One i will always request
It's finally here! Lot of really helpful ideas in the course.

This is the first demo of someone using waves where it actually sounded good… that’s a ballin drum mix
I'm from Brazil and I would like to ask: can the master main output of the table work below 0 dB or is this not a rule?
