I'm 67 haven't built a model car in about 40 years but getting set up to start again. Coming to realize that most hobby shops cater to rc cars and planes and rail road so I'll need to by on line. My preferred builds now will be road race cars and their transporters.
Hey Tom. Not sure where you live but there’s a store called Hobby Lobby that has a whole aisle dedicated to model cars and paint for them. Spent about an hour perusing. Didn’t anything related or pertinent to RC cars in the whole store. I think you may find it refreshing. Hope you can find one near you sir.
Damn! I wish we were friends Donn. I'm 47yrs old but being in your model room would be just like a kid in a candy store. I wish you could see my builds and give your opinion. I wish I had all the models I built through the years. I was one of those kids that made my models look like they were in a crash. That's alright, the models I build as an adult are much better anyway. Thanks for the T&T''s P.S. Your work is so good that I don't have to say it. It speaks for it's self!
Yeah. Not sure where you are from #OldSport , but here in Australia the cost is expensive. Ive just got back into it as well about two or three months ago after almost 30 years, or so. Bit hard to get back into the hobby and trying to rebuild some old models I built, back then, Is another cost, But Fun. Patience is the key, bit by bit, I keep saying to myself. Ha
Yeah...I found a big box of cars I built in the 60's...they all fell apart and I'm sort of trying to put many of them back together.....It is patience, but for us older guys but it is also GREAT exercise for those small motor skills that tend to go sour as we get older. Good luck!
From age 8 to 13 I built a model car at least 3 a month but at that age they were just toys. We'd build them all white. Paint them once in a while. I have built some pretty detailed 1" - 1' scale houses , architectural models that look real. I'm trying to put my talent into making car models so I'm trying to learn.
I have been building model cars since the mid 60s. I love the hobby and still build from time to time. When the costs began to climbing as it has,I picked up where I left off, another category of our beloved hobby, collecting 1/64th, 1/32nd, 1/18th, and 1/24th scale diecast cars. My collection has grown to over 13,000 diecast cars and my plastic builds to almost 1,000. I do find I have a maintenance problem with several of my older plastic builds. Over time the Testors model glue seems to loose it's bonding power and pieces will need reglued. I have used about every technique, tip, and/or trick shown in this video, witch is an amazing video. I saved parts left over from previous builds over the years and really enjoy "KIT BASHING". and using pieces from other kits. I also took some of the most detail molded engine pieces from several kits to make molds and now cast them from resin to use on newer kits. Carbs, manifolds, tunnel rams, headers, and even hood scoops. This is the greatest hobby out there, building and collecting model cars and trucks. It also is and can be a great form of therapy, because it has pulled me through some seriously dark and scary times with my 15 year battle with cancer!!! ****Thank you for this video!!!****
I have a love of early VW specifically early models 50s and 60s bugs and buses, My Father owned a VW workshop I have worked on them I think the fact as you so rightly point out "The cars were readily available , cheap in construction, price ,and would run forever , regardless of temperature or weather conditions" they run forever end of discussion.
Thanks but I'm already overloaded with kits in my collection. I've just finished acquiring more from helping a widow sort out her late husband's model car collection. And on Saturday, our club's annual model kit swap meet will happen and then I'll probably pick up more stuff. So I have no shortage of places to buy them either.
Don i just shared your video on my G+ Page, I hope you dont mind , After watching this vid i got your 2 dvd's and if you look at my builts they are getting better and better every time thanks to you. Marc saying Peace & Have a great Holiday season Don
The greenish nova on the turntable towards the end is Sick. While writing this a couple more completed modles went by and they were realy nice as well. Good job. I wouldn't mind getting back into the hobby but im pretty apprehesive after having lung surgery and all of the breathing trouble. I just need a breathing mask / respirator.
I had an accident 2 years ago and after the rehabilitation, I took up my models again after 40 years. Helped me get most of my dexterity back. scalemodelcars.weebly.com So wear the mask, but do it.
Used to build models as a kid Loved it. I would use Black Bell wire back then that I picked from the trash bin at the phone company and use it for plug wires
Hi Just getting back into the hobby after over 2 decades. Amazing what the internet has done for the hobby. Also the cottage industry fabrication. Guys like Cranky, Yost, Budzik, are great contributors to this fantastic hobby. Questions: What gauge of wire/tubing is being used for spark plug cable which is normally 7mm - 10.4mm How to make realistic headlights? How to tint windows? Do Tamiya clear colours handle the task? and finally, Which is best for chrome trim, BMF, Alcad II, or ModelMaster Buffable Metalizers? Looking to connect with people who have Ertl Farm, and Heavy Equipment kits.
Always been a fan of your work... I can't remember if it was Modle cars mag or scale auto, but I got one of the mags where it showcases your builds.... Love that street rod pickup

Hey Don , I've watched a bunch of your videos and all I can say is WOW! Anyway I'm looking to build a wide body kit and your name popped in my head. I don't know if you have such a video , but perhaps you could point me in the right direction. Thanks for sharing your work and have a great day. 👍👍 Jamie. 👍👍
Will you be making any future DVD's? There is one military modeler that put together a DVD of a complete build starting from opening up the box all the way to total completion of the model. Do you have plans on doing something like that? It would ne neat if you could put together a DVD on how to detail an engine! Peace
i fun easy thing i do to my cars is all small wire from the gas take to the moter and wire from all the brakes to the cylinder for them and e-brake lines it makes the under side look sooo much better and it only takes a few
Some beautiful work there, really like the SWC Willys. I was wondering if you use any setting solution with your decals and if you clear coat them with any lacquer after? Thanks.
It is my unfortunate responsibility to inform everyone that Donn Yost passed away on August 30, 2023. Please keep is family and friends in your thoughts. Thank you Donn Yost for sharing you knowledge, skill and creativity and thank you for allowing me to help share it. You will be missed.
Interesting but not enough information on any one subject. He started out talking about tools. Next thing you know, he's showing the details of a '34 Ford Pickup engine. Too much hopping around for me.
+Jim Ervin Well, It is a preview for the DVD that is currently being sold on www.oldmansmodels.com. If you want all the information, please go and pick one up. You'll be glad you did.
+Andy campos Questions like this mystify me. You know how to get to You Tube to watch a video on model cars, why can't you Google model car kits to see where to buy them? I'm not trying to be a dick, I am just genuinely confused when I see a comment like this.
@FightingSpirt Hi Athrun. Our first DVD that we made is actually all about that. It's called "The Art of Airbrushing Show Quality Model Cars." You can get the DVD at oldmansmodels com.
Where can you buy the tools, you never really explained what you use that you should have as a starting kit. I've been trying to find a video to tell me that but, even this one didn't please clarify thanks!
+Rabid Wolf Gaming As mentioned in another comment, this is a preview of Donn's DVD and as such, will not give you all of the information you are looking for. You have to buy the DVD. That being said, tools can be purchased online, at hobby shops, and even at places like Hobby Lobby, Michaels, and Wal Mart (check the area with nail polish - you can find files, tweezers, and cuticle nippers that can be used as sprue nippers).

this oozes professionalism, remarkable.
What are "ionized fittings" ?? ( 1:50 & 5:28 )
I've heard of *anodized* fittings but perhaps you can explain how that is different from "ionized"
Congrats Donn for making the Scale Auto February 2010 Magazine! 6 Pages on your work!
11 years later, here we arr
same. I'd only go with a 320 grit on the tires, and I'll use a power drill to weather the tread.

Look on Ebay for starters. 1/25 scale model cars. They have kits and look for "junkyard" model parts too. Also, google for "1/25 scale model cars" for hobby shops that sell them. A lot of tools can be found at Harbor Freight. It is nice to buy the best but you can do a lot with cheap tools and patience.
i will say this you do build very nice models i like models of all types yes even vw's i have a 67 bug, microbus, and pickup based on the micro bus they will be built not cheap either almost $40 per model yes all three are 67's

When I build a model car, I usually add things like running engine with rubber belts, full suspension with coils and bearings on the wheels.. Yeah I'm crazy like that :)
