How to Change the Coolant on a Kawasaki Vulcan 750

  • Welcome to the Checkered Floor Garage. This video details the process of an engine coolant change for the VN750A, also known as the Vulcan 750. The coolant must be changed every 15,000 miles or two years.
    Patch Notes:
    12-Oct-2023: Either blue coolant or green coolant (Asian vehicles) should be suitable for the Vulcan 750. I use the green coolant from Peak. Blue coolants often contain organic acid technology (OAT) or hybrid organic acid technology (HOAT), which provides extended protection and corrosion resistance. These coolants are commonly used in modern vehicles. Green coolants on the other hand usually contain inorganic additives and are often associated with older or conventional coolant formulations. They might need to be changed more frequently compared to newer formulations. Either way, do NOT use anything red in the Vulcan's aluminum engine. I heard on VN750.com it'll turn into "mud".
    16-Oct-2023: Some additional insight from a member on VN750.com: it's possible to reach the bleed bolt without removing the gas tank; however, if the bleed bolt is clogged you may need to screw it out a lot before it will bleed. Also the overflow tube from the filler neck passes directly on top of the bleeder, making it difficult to maneuver and observe the flow. You can keep the bike on the side stand and do the entire job without needing the bike up on the center stand. Filling the bike with coolant on the side stand works well because the angle of the filler neck is more level for holding the funnel. Add coolant slowly and stop every so often to lean the bike and burp the bubbles out.

    Hi! Its worth mentioning too at this service stage a thermostat test should be carried out while the system is empty.

      @@CFG750Hello again friend so im wondering if you Vulcan has ever misfired when engine been running for say 10 minutes!
      Is like happening at a specific gauge temperature only (before it rich operating temperature)i pull over and kindly rev tje the engine a few times and temperature passes that spot is all good to go
      Would this be a bad coolant temperature sensor by chance ?

      @@Terrifier1984 If it's misfiring, first let's check those spark plugs. Check all four for their color & condition. Use a write-up like this to help guide you:

      I think this will be a better starting point for your troubleshooting than the coolant temp sensor.
      I've never had a misfire issue but when I first got my Vulcan in 2020, the carb wasn't tuned correctly. However, the bike ran fine until it got hot. Then once the motor was hot it would idle at 3,000 RPM! But I never had this issue when the motor was still warming up. So that's why I suggest starting with checking the condition of the plugs. It could indicate if your carb is mis-tuned (too rich, too lean, etc.). Good luck and let me know if I can help out some more.

      @@CFG750 hi again , so I check it all spark and wires and only found one spark off at 38 instead of 35 gap but again she still doing the same at the mention temperature then it rocks as normal

    The radiator shroud on my '86 750 is one solid piece so the difference was interesting. Great video that helped me know all the drain ports for the coolant as easier to watch you rather than trying to sort it out from the instructions in the book. I had to get into this right now because my temp gauge stop working. I first changed the small wiring in the headlight thinking maybe it was bad after all the vibration and it only cost $12 on eBay. When that didn't work I had to remove the gas tank and get into it. I quickly found the wire to the temp sensor was broken, but I had already purchased a new sensor and thermostat thinking it was a bad idea to change them after 37 years. You can't buy a new replacement housing that has sensor, thermostat, and that bleeder valve you show and use. I actually wonder what that bleeder was for so thanks for that tip. I found a used housing on eBay that looked in very tough shape, but it only cost $8. It was filthy when I got as the place didn't do a thing to it. I took it apart and cleaned it all up, replaced the two gaskets, and put it all back together with a new sensor and thermostat. I didn't need to change the bleeder as it cleaned up nicely. I wanted the spare just in case I had a problem when I took it all apart. Other than the poor audio in some parts of the video, which I'm sure bothered you more than us, I thought you missed an education opportunity by not explaining where the temp sensor was and where the thermostat was. I do thank you for the video and it made my repair job much easier.

      I'm glad this video helped you! And it's funny you mention that this video helped you to easily identify all the coolant drain ports because that's partly why I made the video in the first place. You see, I did a coolant change when I first got the bike and then 2 years later when I was getting ready to do the coolant change again, I couldn't remember all the drain bolt locations and figured I'd just make a video about it. So I'll definitely be leveraging this video when I do it for a third time.
      Thanks for the feedback, I really do appreciate it. This video was made early on, before I knew what I wanted for this channel or what it would become. So the audio is pretty bad, it's just being recorded straight from my iPhone 8. Shortly after this video I got a pretty good mic to improve the audio quality and I'm so glad I did.
      Definitely talking about the thermostat and temp sensor are great ideas! I also wish I at least mentioned that. But maybe in a future video I'll show how to change out or even test if the thermostat is good! And in doing so I can talk about the temp sensor and other coolant-related items. Thanks again, homie!

    My VN 1997 kawasaki vulcan 1500 that I have purchased has bin so badly the collected and the chap I brought her off was all so up set when I started carrying out the work on the bike like the fu survice that he was told had bin done but obviously not if I cud send you photos you're see what I mean. But the coolent I'm having problems with as can't locate the drain plug so ended up drawing her from the radiator but when going to fill her up with new coolent it's not going to the radiator just to the over flow . Any thoughts on what to do ? Would be much appreciated thank you again and love you're videos has helped me build my bike back up again

    Also i read that to change the stator u need to take out the engine.

      Yes, this is probably among the list of top issues with this bike, honestly. It's not a matter of if the stator fails...but when. As with the stator on all motorcycles and also the alternator for cars...they just don't last the life of the machine. So to access the stator on the VN750, you either need to tilt or remove the engine otherwise there's not enough clearance to remove the stator side cover.
      There are some great guides on VN750.com showing how to tilt the engine. And it's my personal goal to get this into a video procedure in the next few years. I want to be able to do this for my own Vulcan.

      Hola. Lamento escuchar lo de su estator quemado. El estator puede ser difícil de reemplazar en el Vulcan 750 porque el marco está en el camino. Para quitar el estator quemado, debe inclinar o quitar el motor.
      Cuando mi estator se quemó en 2021, lo llevé al mecánico para que lo arreglara. Pero el objetivo a largo plazo de este canal de RUclips es mostrar cómo quitar el motor. Sin embargo, eso no te ayuda en este momento, lo siento.
      Visite VN750.com para obtener ayuda con la inclinación o extracción del motor si reemplaza el estator usted mismo. Muchos miembros han hecho esto y han publicado consejos útiles, como este:

    Hello...i was going to Buy a Vulcan 750 but i was reading they suck on the chain tensor. And Also problems to start up

      Yeah, the automatic cam chain tensioners that Kawi put on these bikes are kind of weak and tend to start failing after ~15k to 25k miles, +/-. But it's easy to know if/when they start failing by the cam chain noise you'll start to hear. And it's also an easy and relatively cheap fix, too. IMO, I wouldn't let this hinder you from purchasing a VN750 because all bikes are going to have their weak points/quirks. The first video I made for this channel was replacing the automatic CC tensioners with manual ones:

      And regarding the startup problem, it's more so hard to start when the engine is already at operating temperatures. And this is another pretty straightforward fix:

    Hi, what should the expansion bottle be filled up to after topping up radiator, full line or half full ?

      I fill it up to half and keep an eye on it for the first few rides afterwards (make sure to check the level with the bike on the center stand). I've never needed to top mine off afterwards though.

      It can be a lot, yes, but if this isn't done routinely then the coolant could degrade and you may end up needing to do more work like replacing mechanical seals, the coolant impeller, etc. Especially given the age of these Vulcan 750s...the newest one was made in 2006.
      It's also worth it to do this routine maintenance on these old bikes because you can check the health of other components such as the thermostat and thermostat cap, hidden radiator hoses & clamp tightness, etc.

      I'm unsure since I've only owned a Vulcan 750. But a google search says that you should be good with the same type of coolant as me, the green stuff. Seems to be the coolant for many Kawi bikes from those years. Also check out this forum post here. I hope this helps you.
