Let me ditto the commenters below by saying THANK YOU CBS NEWS RUclips CHANNEL for posting this! Personally I can't get enough of these vintage news broadcasts from the 1970s (especially Watergate) so please keep 'em coming! In these times, they're ESPECIALLY relevant!
I was six years old in August 1974 when President Nixon came on the TV and said he was going to resign from office the next day. One question I had as a kid was, “Who has more power than the President of the United States?” In 1974, the separation of powers that allowed for checks and balances in our government ensured that President Nixon did not become a dictator because it was the legislative branch and the judicial branch that had more power than President Nixon when he broke the law and they gave him no other choice but to resign from office. I wish those checks and balance our three branches of government were as well enforced as they were in 1974 to prevent a constitutional crisis like the one we’re currently facing now.
Remember it well. Damn if it isn't happening again. On the day he resigned, I left the cult that I was in. Ended up having a breakdown ..Blind faith in leaders is asking for trouble!
@@peterdarker1 Check out my RUclips Channel. There is very little that i have not done or seen. Right now, i have 5 weeks to make sure that I am not homeless. On disability and the yuppies want to raise the rent.
Before the resignation of Richard Nixon, cheap beer and blatant stupidity in Cleveland, Ohio on the teams "Ten Cent Beer Night" in a baseball game between the Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers led to one of the worst sports riots in American history in which you saw Mike Hargrove nearly get hit in the head with a jug of Thunderbird Wine, fans throwing firecrackers in the Rangers dugout, fans running on to the field with some of them leaving their clothes in the stands, both the Indians and Rangers fighting their own fans, nine arrests, three bases stolen (never to be returned), the Cleveland SWAT Team having to swing their batons at people who wanted to fight the police in which they had to throw tear gas on to the field, and the game being forfeited in favor of the Texas Rangers after the head umpire got hit in the head with a chair, cut by a rock and found a knife in the infield grass.
Not only did I vote for him. He was also my commander in chief. I voted for Trump because I thought he was going to bring back the jobs Nixon sent to Maos communist china. Fun Fact, The last time the economy was this bad was in the early 1980s. I remember it well. That's when the american jobs were going to communist china full blast, and us idiots footed the bill.

I agree !!! I was a senior in high school at the time and had my eyes peeled to the morning papers and of course the news on TV.
Thank you CBS News for posting old footage like this

When shame existed in public life. Today shameful behavior is tolerated. 😢
When people cared about our country.
Old footage. How cool. Also please talk about the political problems in Tunisia
Hell with everyone else I greatly admire this man and everything he was able to accomplish coming from where he came from in Whittier.
He did accomplish a lot. But he was also one of the most insecure President's we ever had. And that finally caught up with him

Wow. I agree 100% and you sound like you have a lot of interesting/enlightening stories to tell

The Donald Trump of his time what a disgrace
Except Richard Nixon wasn't orange.
The Joe Biden of his time.
Nixon, like DJT was a good president, unfairly maligned by democrat filth.
Trump is 10 times worse and 10 times more dangerous
Could we have a CBS News Archive: Bill Clinton - Monika Lewinsky Scandal?

You don’t have a strong record on picking good Presidents do you. Those two thugs were the worst in history. 😂😮😢
The news background is so boring, just a boring desk and black background. Glad they changed it in the 80s-90s
Do you pick to watch a channel's news coverage because of its background?
@@stw2323 no, but it’s still ugly
Idk for some reason I find it hard to believe a President would tape himself doing anything incriminating...
Just saying
