So, this might sound weird, but I save the little glue ball from my tool (I stick it to the base of my lamp, lol) and then, the next time I use the glue ball to pull all that excess gunk out of the crevasses BEFORE I pull it off the backing. That makes it a lot easier when you're dealing with smaller pieces.
