Check out my review on these artist quality coloured pencils from Koh-I-Noor, the Koh-I-Noor Polycolor. Coloured pencil art is fast becoming a highly sought after medium, allowing the artist to simply begin creating with very little to no art supply preparation. The coloured pencil artists themselves are so incredibly talented, I myself am not an artist, I am in the process of learning and pretty much all self taught. In the process of learning I have created this channel to help other beginners to the world of colored pencil art trawl through the vast array of pencils available to them, which to look out for and which to avoid.
For a more in-depth review of the Koh-I-Noor Polycolor, you can head over to my web site www.theartgearguide.com/home/k... and check out the extensive information available over there, along with links to the cheapest sets available on Amazon.

Hi. I've got 72 set and portrait set and these are my favorite colored pencils EVER. I'd also bought myself full set of Faber Castell Polychromos and full set of Prismacolors, but I've decided to resell them, as I simply prefer my Polycolors... Polychromos are to transparent for me and they do not blend easily, Prismacolors give "too much at once" and they are not erasable. Polycolors are the happy medium. I love the way they lay down pigment. They are not grainy, no greasy layer, they erase nicely, they blend beautifully. One warning - they are NOT lightfast. I've learned about it hard way and then I started testing other brands, I wasn't pleased, though - and now I'm just scanning my work. But I do note sell my drawings, and never will.

Ewa Pośpiech what does "light fast" mean?

    • @_kittykat9445
      @_kittykat9445 6 лет назад +5

Baby-sama Lightfast essentially means unaffected by light, so if something isn’t lightfast then it will fade when exposed to light

I love these. I live in Czechia, so...they are cheap in there. I would love to buy Prismacolor pencils, but they are 6x more expensive than Koh-i-noor. So...i have everything from Koh-i-noor 😂 I love their quality and colors. Yes, some of the colors are similar, but I don't mind, sometimes you need them. I have watercolor pencils from them, please try them. These are great quality, too.

The core size indeed is 3.8 mm. I have the brown line as well. There are only 3 colours that are not in the 72 set. In the portrait line, there are 6 additional colours. Please note that the numbers 17, 131, 177, 178 in the 36 set are not very lightfast. By the way, this is the list of colours:
    1) titanium white. 2) lemon yellow. 3) chrome yellow. 4) dark yellow. 5) reddish orange. 170) pyrrole red. 7) carmine. 8) Bordeaux red. 9) flesh. 131) pink. 177) lilac violet. 178) reddish violet. 179 or 13) lavender violet. 181) bluish violet. 15) ice blue. 16) cerulean blue. 17) cobalt blue. 18) light blue. 19) saphire blue. 20) Prussian blue. 21) bluish green. 22) yellowish green. 23) spring green. 24) pea green. 25) meadow green. 26) dark green. 27) olive green dark. 28) gold ochre. 29) light ochre. 30) reddish brown. 31) light brown. 32) natural sienna. 33) dark brown. 34) bluish grey. 35) platinum grey. 36) ivory black. The missing number 6 is a part of higher sets, numbers 10, 11, 12 were replaced because of disappointing lightfastness. Mohe here: www.koh-i-noor.cz/media/files/content/pastelove-tuzky.pdf

I love these pencils. My husband bought me the 72 set a year ago. They were my first "adult" pencils and I love using them. They are hard wearing, easy to sharpen, lovely to use and the colours are vibrant and beautiful. And above all, they smell gorgeous.
Don't throw that sleeve away. It's great to hold the tin together if you wan to stand the tin on end for storage. I'm still using mine.
I have since gone on to get a decent collection of FC Polychromos (because I couldn't help myself!) and I have some Derwent Coloursoft. Coloursoft are my least favourite. I can't really choose between the FC Polys and my Koh-I-Noors. I love them both. But the K-I-N are really the best value.

    • @suewilkinson910

I'm not at home so can't check, but there are a lot of greys in my 72 set. However, there is nowhere near that range of pinks and peach in my set so the portrait set is different. There are not enough pinks for me. I like flowers and the range of pinks is not great at all.

Hi Sue thanks so much for stopping by my channel, I agree with everything you've just said and I don't think any coloured pencil artist or beginner artist as in my case can resist the pull of Faber Castell Polychromos. I remember the first time I opened my 120 set, my eldest daughter who studies art was with me and I don't think she had ever seen me react quite like that before, especially over pencils lol.
I wish I had of purchased the 72 set now and you are so right, for price value they are really hard to beat, perhaps maybe the Lyra, if you like the Koh-I-Noor I really think you would like the Lyra which are also very reasonably priced. Thank you so much for your comment Sue, all the best.

I have used the watercolor pencils from Koh-i-Noor for many years and I recently purchased their soft pastels and they are more of a medium pastel like Rembrandt sticks. Nice Review Harry, I like your newer review a bit better but it is nice to go back and see your early work! Thanks!

Thank you so much my friend, I cringe when I watch my old reviews and how terrible they were, that is why I try to redo a lot of them with the better quality equipment I have. I also have to say, the biggest reason my reviews improved quality wise and the way in which I now conduct them, was down to the amazing critiques I received. I love being critiqued when someone would say, your sound is a bit bad, try this or try this. It was through listening to these critiques that I improved. I think listening to other peoples opinions is so important to growth. As a soldier there were not many that could critique me, I lived and loved being a soldier and it was the one thing I knew I was really good at. I spent every waking hour perfecting whatever I was working toward.
When I first started drawing 7 years ago now, at first I found it difficult but I realised very quickly that this was something I was starting at the very bottom of the ladder, in fact I was the ground the ladder rested on. If I wanted to improve, I had to learn from others and listen to what I was being told. But during this process I learnt so much more, people within the art community help me to understand so much more than just art and creating better audio or lighting.

If you choose the 12-set of grey shades, there is not one of them included inthe 72-set, which is great. Not so in the 12-set of browns, there are only 5 or 6 shades new. Nevertheless i love Kooh-i-noor pencils. The brightness and richment of pigment is great. They are vibrant and just beautiful. Not completely in the league of Polychromos but they come quite close and of course are much cheaper. I found somewhere online a list with the lightfast ratings and there are big differences between the pencils. Especially the pinks, violets and oranges are NOT really lightfast. So that is something one has to be careful about. They blend beautiful but because of their wax basement you cannot do as many layers as with Polychromos or even Prismacolor. They are bright but get shiny. They also are quite crumbly but nevertheless can get sharpened to a fine point always and don't break. I love to use them in combination with other brands. One thing I don't like at all: the reds in the 72-set are much too similar. Maybe my impressions can help...

I have looked at a LOT of sites selling koh-i-noor pencils, and cannot find anywhere that offers sets by color (pink, grey, brown, etc). Can you please let me know where I would find such a thing?? Oops.. update: I found them on Amazon, but I actually had to query :polycolor grey:. The the grey, brown, and portrait packs came up. As the 72 set is less than $1 per pencil, these are slightly more - up to $2 per pencil.

I am considering buying a 72 set. I am new to coloured pencils, but I have regular pencils set from Koh-I-Noor which is wonderful. I bought standard gold, titanium white, ice blue, sapphire blue, dark yellow and carmine red ones (40, 1, 15, 19, 4 and 7 in colour chart) to see how they blend or look on paper. I tried them on regular printing paper which is not a good quality paper, but results were decent. I can only find Canson papers in my area, but I need to check if these are good ones. I found a colour chart on Koh-I-Noor website (you need to look at a single coloured pencil) and I don't think they will do a bigger set than 72, because there are only 84. Thanks for the video!

I just watched this vid again. I decided to get he Portrait set and try them. I feel like the colors are well chosen, and I am buying smaller sets to try, before I decide which is my go-to brand, if there even has to be one. They all have their unique qualities, I just want vivid color, blendability, and a sharp point with minimal breakage. Thanks again!

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  7 лет назад +1

TerrieJ DimestoreDivaTV I think your approach is perfect to buying pencils, get the smaller sets or even open stock first, try them and see what you think before branching out to the larger sets. With the Lyra, Koh-I-Noor and Marco Renoir you will definitely find what you are looking for regarding vivid color, blendability and a good sharp point.

    • @TerrieJohnson731

Oh thanks so much for your quick reply! I really appreciate it! I took the plunge for a few reasons to get the 150 Prismacolor set with an Alvin Brass Bullet sharpener. My first choice for blending is oil, and I did a test on my 24 pack of Prismas today, and I have my Marco Raffines for sharp details...they look gorgeous with oil solvent, and as a beginner, I want to spend the least amount of time layering possible. With a small set, I am creating too many values where I would be much happier just having the color, or more near. I am definitely looking in a year for a better quality set- Prismas have dropped to 92.00 for the complete set and I have the 24 for travel. I almost got nauseous, but spending 100.00 on pencils and a sharpener, but ahhh, what joy. I know how to sharpen with a blade and sand board if a pencil gives me the slightest bit of trouble! Hope you are feeling well with your back tonight :-)

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  7 лет назад +1

TerrieJ DimestoreDivaTV Thank you so much for your kind comment. I know exactly what you mean about the Prismacolor Premier. I can't tell you how many times a day I look at the 132 or 150 or Prismas on Amazon almost clicking buy, but then my experience with my 72 set keeps creeping in and I start to worry about wasting my money. Thing is the pencils themselves are gorgeous I really love them and still use what is left of my 72 set, I just can't understand why Prisma don't try to bring them back to the way the used to be. I never used Prisma when they were the main goto pencil, but I've listened to CP artists say how much they have changed over the years in terms of quality control. But I am so with you, I would really really love to get a set of the 150 Prismas and still might, but I still have quite a lot of pencils to buy for reviews, so maybe when I've run out of pencils to review I will treat myself.

I have recently bought the portrait set, and yeah, couldn't find any info on the colors included... The Koh-I-Noor website isn't exactly helpful.
There is the "basic" 72 pencils set, numbered, well, 1 to 72. Then there's the gray set, numbers starting with 4 (401, 403, 458 etc.); the portrait colors, 350-355 (the rest of the portrait set contains colors from the 72 set); the brown set (don't know the numbers) and some new colors I found in the open stock, namely 126, 131, 177, 178, 180 and 182, all orange / pink / violet. As far as I know, these are all kinda new and it looks like the info is just lagging a bit :)

I am color blind and yes I work with colored pencils. Thank you so much for pointing out that the pencils need to be labeled with the color. Otherwise I am relying on someone or a color identification app which either one I don’t trust.

No problem at all, since starting out in art I’ve come across quite a few Colored pencil artist either Colored blind or some other vision issues. Obviously I have no idea what this must be like from a personal point of view, but I do try my best to consider other people’s issues when conducting my reviews.
Occasionally companies reach out to me and ask my opinion on certain things to do with their products and printing Color names on the barrels is one such conversation I’ve had on behalf of people such as yourself Anita.
I’ve seen lots of wonderful art from artists Colored blind or visually impaired and so I think companies should make the process as easy as possible.

    Not in the 72 Set:
Light cobalt blue, Peach Orange, Salmon pink, Amaranth Pink, Bluish Pink, Light Portrait Pink, Portrait Peach, Dark Earth Brown, Caput Mortuum, Burnt Sienna.
There is even an Polycolor Blender Pencil!

Hi there is a reason for that, I think Koh-I-Noor have 144 colors in total for the Polycolor range. The have a 24 Landscape set, 24 Portrait Set, a set of 12 Grey and 12 Brown. However, some of the pigments in the smaller sets are duplicated in the 72 set. When you buy all the sets, the koh-I-Noor Polycolor range is impressive and I think they are some of the best pencils on the market for their price range. Hope this helps

Thank you for the video. I will try them but I'll only start with a couple of colors for now, to see if I like them. I don't draw, but I love to color on adult coloring books so I use a blender pencil on Polychromos pencils. I have one from Koh-I-Noor but it is very bad, the lead breaks very fast and it has a lot of hard parts that scratch the paper. I now found the Derwent blender which is great.

Gear guide... Do you think the quality is likely to suffer being made in China? And does pencil quality differ between the tin and board box types?
Asking because well... There is a CRAZY price difference here in China AND back home in UK; I picked up Mondeluz x72 set for 1200rmb (£14), whilst the tin is 2900rmb (£33). Same story back in UK: £23 for x72 box and £44 tin?
With that price difference i'm hoping this is not a case of 'you get what they pay for'.. Because the ones in card are cheap as chips. :D
Also would you suggest getting the Poly as WELL as the Mondeluz. Will I notice any difference in vibrancy/softness when using dry?

I should have bought the polycolor better? Is Polycolor better to paint without water? Do the pencils paint equal? Thank you!!

Kohinoor definitely has a link to the lightfast rating now. I have the off downloaded and printed out. The pinks are the least lightfast but that's the same no matter what medium you use. I love that these don't break and and I can do light shading over my watercolor portraits. Prisma are too intense for me.

I know it's been 3years from this review but have just seen these in a set of 144 set in two tins set 1 and two, price is around £108.00 I just wanted to know would you invest in the 144 set or buy prism?
I have heard some bad things about prism pencils breaking a lot.
Great reviews by the way, always check out your reviews before buying any of my supplies.
Plus I love koh-I-Noor pastel pencils.

Hi mate, I have the 144 set and will be uploading my review very soon. I have always loved Koh-I-Noor pencils and so I was very excited when Koh-I-Noor told me last year that this set would be launching. I have even compiled a spreadsheet showing which colors are in which sets including the 12 brown and grey sets and the 24 Landscape and Portraiture sets and boy has that been a difficult and complicated process.
The thing about Prismacolor I think it is the luck of the draw as to whether or not you get a good set that won’t break. When I first started out with colored pencils I got a 72 set of Prisma and almost all of them broke leaving me pretty much a useless set of pencils. A few months later I tried again and got another 72 set only this time more than half the set broke leaving a few okay. About a year later I really wanted to get the 150 set because of the amazing palette and so I took the plunge. I have used and sharpened every single pencil in that set, some only to swatch, but they have all been sharpened and not one has broke touch wood.
It is hard to advise on this topic all I can do is tell you my experience and leave the rest up to you, I would hate to say one way or the other and run the risk of you wasting your hard earned money mate.
Thank you so much mate for your incredibly kind comment and support I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it.

Also, I don’t know if that was the paper or the type of pressure you used, but it seems like these pencils let tons of white spaces in the paint, right? Like, “wholes”, I don’t know how to say this in English. But I mean, I think a Caran D’ache blender is able to fix it, I guess.

Hi Veronica. I have heard this about the Blick and Koh-I-Noor pencils however I personally don’t think they are made by Koh-I-Noor. I’ve just got into bed when I seen your message and so I quickly emailed my contact at Koh-I-Noor to find out for definite. In the morning when I am in the studio, I will also get both pencils and test them side by side, it’s been a while since I used them both and I want to make sure I provide an accurate account of both pencils for you and not one from memory as my memory is terrible.
I know that the Jerrys Soho Colored Pencils are definitely made by Cretacolor in Austria and some people get this partnership confused with Blick and Koh-I-Noor.
However I will definitely have an answer from my contact about whether or not they make Blick pencils and I will also reply back to you in the morning about how both pencils compare. Sorry I couldn’t give and answer immediately but I’ve just locked the studio up and come to bed.
Thank you so much for your question and your support

Hi Harry, just an FYI, they are made in the Chex Republic. So are Blick Pencils, an art store we have in the US and it also has online store with any and everything. I have a 72 set of Blick, plus a few open stock not included in the set, nice pinky peachy flash tones. My friend has the Kol-I-Noor, and both sets have same color name and color number. I usually set the Blicks a little shearer, on sale $51 for 72 set and 78 cent for open stock. They have 12, 24, 36, 48, and 72 sets and portrait set. Just thought I'd share, love your videos! After reading your question, I ordered a set of the woodless pencils so that I can review them and compare them to the pencils. Only problem is that they will not get to me until after Christmas, but I promise I will get them reviewed for you as soon as possible and then you can make a decision about buying the pencils and giving yourself a wider range of colours. There is a slight difference but it more noticeable when it comes to blending. With Watercolor pencils, you can’t blend them they way you would ordinary colored pencils you have to activate them with water. I used to wonder this very same question, why would anyone buy colored pencils when they can get the best of both worlds and not have to use Odourless Mineral Spirits but they just don’t work like that.

Great pencils, only one mayor downside to me: intermixing with other premium pencils (Pablo, Polychromos, Design) is a disaster when using OMS (Zest-it, green for oil).
It is verry strange and when dry intermixing brands they perform better but they never hold up against intermixing pablo with polychromos and bruynzeel design. In fact, I can be layering these last 3 brands perfectly untill I ad a Polycolor layer...
Never the less: If you only use Polycolor pencils, it ain't an issue! Then they become great pencils for there price!

Hi Gert that is really interesting I’ll have to give that a test after Christmas, thank you so much for sharing information like this with us because it is so important and I think it will help prevent other CP artist from making the same mistakes.
You see I used to use OMS but didn’t like the results I got so exclusively I use the Caran D’Ache Blending Sticks but I try my best to show certain pigments blending with OMS because I know so many CP Artists use it and it’s important for me to incorporate the test into my reviews. Thank you so much for your comment and is an excellent idea for a video, testing different pencil blending combination with and without OMS.

    • @BeardedBarley1
      @BeardedBarley1 3 года назад

@@TheArtGearGuide - There may be one more test you can incorporate if you don’t mind the suggestion especially with regard to the problem with the Marco copies of Holbein. You probably already know it, but the wax and the oil separate when mixing them with other wax-based colored pencils, like with Prismacolor. It looks really weird, like what happens when you spray paint light switch plates without first getting rid of all of the oil from hands touching them: The paint just all bunches up. What’s worse is the result of mixing the two pencils is it then takes on a strange slimy appearance. It’s just gross.
The reason it was a concern of mine is because I still have my original Prismacolor Premiere full set from a long time ago before all the breakage problems. If I recall correctly, I ordered something like a black pencil somewhere during the mess and was sorely disappointed by it like everyone else. As a result, my husband bought me a full set of the Faber-Castell Polychromos. However, Prismacolor does seem to be putting out better pencils now. Thus, in order to supplement my other two sets of colored pencils, I was looking for a pastelly type of colored pencil set of some kind to use alongside them since they both lack a wide variety of pastel colors. I can only guess that maybe the lack is because the white pencil can help make a pastel color out of the others.
But as lazy as what this sounds, I just don’t want to have to work that hard since art is really just a means for me to relax. But when I found out what that copy set did, it made me wonder about the Holbein. I believe the rest of the review and others I saw found that the Holbein colored pencils play well with the other big-name colored pencils unlike its copycat. So yeah...that would be a great test for all the pencils you review as well as the OMS test, checking to see if the pencils in question play well with other colored pencils. Just a thought and you can take it with a grain of salt.

Sukumal Sinha I understand that but I contacted Koh-I-Noor after this review in the interest of getting my facts right and they have said that their cores have both wax and oil in them. The hardness or softness of a pencil is determined by so many factors including baking time and temperature, so they are neither wax or oil they are a combination of both with slightly more wax than oil. The thing is with my review, I never take details from Amazon, other review blogs or EBay, I only contact the company Direct for information and if for some reason the company don't respond then I say I don't have the information because I am not about to guess information especially when people are relying of us reviewers for information.

I know this was from five years ago but I bought a set of 36 kohinoor poly colour oilbased pencils. I live in Canada and read tons of reviews on you tube and fine art supply stores. The pencils are rated with excellent lightfast quality, superior pigment etc. Some colours have better lightfastness than others but the prisms are not all lightfast either. I also heard that there are knockoffs and fake kohinoor poly colors made. My authentic ones smell beautiful and there is the color number and colour name and serial number on the pencils that I purchased six months ago. The hardmuth claim to be lightfast and for professional artist use. The cedarwood smells beautiful. So order from a reputable store. All top brands have a few clouds that fade more quickly. Avoid those colours and use a protective UV light varnish

Galactic Vibrations the make up of pencils is really difficult to identify especially when the manufacture of the pencils don't list openly such information. For example, I'd always been lead to believe that Caran D'Ache Luminance were wax and the Caran D'Ache Pablo oil based. So because I am putting myself forward as a reviewer I need to get the information right as best I can. So if I can I contact the companies and have them confirm or deny certain information. Turns out the Luminance are more oil based, they have a special mixture of wax and oil mostly oil but the secret with Caran D'Ache is how the pencils are baked. The Pablos are again wax not oil but they feel oil because of the process Caran D'Ache keep very close to their hearts. So I do occasionally get things wrong but if I do it's either to do with language barrier or the company not being available to answer questions. I can't put videos out telling others info on pencils if it is wrong and so I try my very best to get it right. If I get it wrong I always apologise and fix the claim as I know this stuff is vitally important to CP artists. Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting I really appreciate your feed back. The Art Gear Guide I just ordered the Kohinoor Polycolor landscape set of 24 from Amazon, it's heavy on greens and blues instead of all those yellows and oranges that I rarely use which is nice, but I also wanted to add, that all of the main US online art suppliers describe the Koh-I-Noor pencils as oil based so based on that consensus, I would say it's very likely oil based. I've also noticed that all oil based pencils have the same poly prefix in their names like Lyra Rembrandt 'Polycolor' and Faber Castel 'Polychromos' and Kohinoor 'polycolor' It's not definitive evidence, but it's enough for me to believe they're oil based

Copied from KohInoor website --- Koh-I-Noor spans the globe in search of rich, top quality pigments for our Polycolor pencils. These pigments are highly concentrated and perfectly dispersed throughout the entire Polycolor color range. Polycolor pencils also maintain excellent light permanency, creating vibrant, durable pieces of art.
Another key component of the Polycolor pencil is the use of the special oils in the pencil lead. These oils, along with other binders, allow the Polycolor pencil to create dense, even strokes without the use of heavy pressure. The 3.8mm lead diameter is an added artistic value to these pencils. The broad edge is excellent for shading, while a finely sharpened point creates exquisite detail. These leads are encased in California Cedar for easy sharpening. The end result is a water-resistent, non-toxic pencil that is suitable for all artists. ***According to KohINoor, these are OIL based pencils, instead of wax***

Maire Millard if you look at the date I made this review and then take a look at my most recent Koh-I-Noor review, which was last week and it was the Woodless pencils, I stated in the review that the wealth of information on their web site has changed significantly. In fact, not only has it changed on their web site, but also their actual products. I was incredibly happy and surprised to see that on the Woodless pencils lightfast ratings had been displayed on the barrel of the pencil. However, a view contacted me and left a comment on that video stating that she has the woodless pencils from about a year ago and the color name is not even printed on her set.
Although I appreciate you copying and pasting this information on the video, before doing so, I would appreciate it if you look at the date the video was uploaded and try to consider the information that was available at the time. With regards to the wax and oil based thing. I had spoke to a Koh-I-Noor representative and still have the email, but it was that employee who told me they were wax. As I have stated many times, when I make my reviews, where possible I always go directly to the companies for verification on questions. If I am told something by the company, what right do I have then to think they are wrong and report the opposite.
Thankfully I have been put in touch with a new Koh-I-Noor rep who is incredibly knowledgeable. In fact it was that person who also corrected me on the fact that Koh-I-Noor no longer manufacture in China, only in the Czech Republic.

I will definitely take your advice on board. I take it you are referring to me not talking directly about the product and adding in other topics here and there? If this is what you are referring to, that has absolutely nothing to do with locking in focus. I served in the British Army, Special Forces and Sniper trained, locking in focus is not really an issue of me. Being a disabled veteran stuck in the house all day every day with only my dog to talk to, has more of a part to play. I use these video reviews as a way of helping other artists but also as my window to the world that is really beyond my reach anymore. I used to love socialising, talking to people from all backgrounds and all over the world, now I am house bound and it is no fun at all. Doing these videos however give me huge solace.

Kitty van der Heul to some people no, but to others Yes and so I try to cater to as many different people as I can. Some people find it interesting and others boring just as some people find videos on pencils boring but others find them really interesting. It's really all a matter of personal preference and I try to appeal to as many people as I can. Thanks for stopping by and I hope I've explained myself a bit better.

Kitty van der Heul It can. If a company has been around for a long time and has had a good reputation for the entire duration, you'll know they make a quality product.
