He has always been one of my favourites. Seriously neglected by the recording companies. Mercifully his outstanding Otello was recorded!

Leggo molti commenti poco lusinghieri e andrò controcorrente.Ce ne fossero ieri e oggi tenori così.Bel timbro e correttezza musicale forse gli mancava un po' di spavalderia ma eravamo nel 1966.Un tenore con il quale i teatri andavano sul sicuro .Il carisma come qualcuno ha scritto non si misura con il blasone .Apparteneva a quella serie di tenori che poteva stare trainquillamente con la SERIE A tenorile.
Concordo. Gran classe, eleganza nel canto, sicurezza e nessuna fatica nell'emissione. Poi era la scuola alla 'Bergonzi' (che non mi ha mai entusiasmato) ma oggi ce ne fossero. Non lo conoscevo. Grazie!

Cossutta had a nice spinto voice and sang very well. He only appeared 13 times at the Met in Norma as Pollione. 6 times in 1973 and 7 times in 1979. He was a fine Otello who can be heard in the role here on You Tube
A forgotten tenor, he was a regular at the ROH/London in the 1960’s. Great voice by any standards yet he never attained the fame of other tenors in his league, possibly because of a lack of recordings with the major labels. Great shame as I prefer his voice/technique to Corelli who received all the adulation.

I agree - he had such a sincere way of singing without all the histrionics a la Corelli. He fortunately did record Otello (a role I heard him sing on a number of occasions - he was always magnificent) and he does feature on Karajan's Verdi Requiem. I wished he had attempted some Wagner.......

For those of you who are wonder why we read only about Kaufman it's nothing to do with his abilities it's just the publicity machine wants to concentrate on making stars
Funny how people try to justify his obscurity today. The thing is, in his day he was held in high regard. He rarely appeared at the Met but he opened many seasons of Chicago, and was a great favorite in London where, quality of music production was in general far superior to those at the Met in the 60s. Always eloquent in interpretation and attentive to the score and his colleagues on stage - if Bergonzi is crowned as the stylist why has Cossutta to be condemned to mere ‘correctness’? In the end what is charisma anyways? Bonisolli? Pavarotti? Nah.

You see, Cossuta never gained the fame he deserved.

Un tenore certamente da rispettare, ma a me non piace. Non proprio affascinante, tecnicamente non proprio convincente, voce non così bella (forse se cantata meglio le cose sarebbero andate diversamente) e nemmeno così particolare. Risulta meglio in Otello.

Oggi un cantante così lo sognano, Ma non scherziamo. Certo non ha il carisma del divo ma è stato un buon cantante, sicuramente non di serie c, abbiamo sentito di peggio, molto di peggio. Lei parla di fraseggio..... Corelli aveva un buon fraseggio? Mah....
Vallarelli caro: Cossutta era triestino e ricordo una Cavalleria all'aperto (anfiteatro del Parque Centenario di Buenos Aires) quando era sconosciuto (1956?). Comparando l'aria del Ballo con Campora che io vidi nel 60' al Colón, che stonava ed aveva acuti sempre al limite, Cossutta é migliore. É stato un bravo Otello.
