Same here, Stubbs. Everything is established and growing, so now it's more like putter maintenance. Actually the lawn keeps me busier; hand weeding, trimming around the beds and stopping encroachment, seeding bare spots, watering and mowing, etc.

I try to do my lawn work in the spring and then just enjoy it. That said I don't have much lawn to worry about!

The best part of gardening for me is to wake up every morning and see the progress of my gardens. From time to time a new plant will come up in the beds here and I know that its a gift from the birds that hang out here. Its cool to go online and see what plant is growing that I don't recognize that the birds have dropped as seed. Each day normally brings something new to the gardens here. As always thanks for sharing your video. :)

    • @AlbertaUrbanGarden

Birds are both the bringer of new and the eater of my darn crops lol.
It is really nice to go out and observe !!

    • @artistben7

I put up "Eat Here Only" signs for the birds but that never worked. Maybe I can have a wall built around my property and have my neighbors pay for it. ")

lol I know where that idea came from ;)
Good luck with the birds. Its something I don't have to deal with them that often.

Now that the garden is all planted, like you said, there is not much to do... Just a little weeding, which I don't even consider a chore any longer since it's just a few minutes a week, and it allows me to spend some time unwinding in the garden. For me the best thing to do is pruning my tomatoes, I absolutely love the smell that tomato plants leave on my hands, a smell that will last for hours even when I go back inside and work on my computer or in the garage. Maybe even better is just spending time watching, learning, this is my first year gardening so I am learning many things and already thinking on what I will do differently next year 😄

your right about weeds and mulch. My leaf waste is more of a pine needle mix but i placed it over my potatoe bed. There are very few weeds in this bed and i will be doing this from now on through out my garden. such a time saver and the mulch will break down to help the soil anyways. kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

i like your new format but happy to read you aren't completely abandoning the scientific ones. I do like your grapes as it is something I am not familiar but don't have the room with everything else. My favorite thing in the garden is the stress reducing aspect, something I don't realize until I have been weeding awhile. It frees the mind.
That bike tunnel is a great feature too .

    • @AlbertaUrbanGarden
      @AlbertaUrbanGarden  8 лет назад +1

It's a fun format but I won't ever give up my science and how-to clips. I just like the variety.
The bike shoot was so much fun but tough to do!
I agree the garden helps free my stress and feed my body and mind.

Expert level seccateur twirl! The garden is looking great! At some point you just have to enjoy your hard work, sit down, have a cup of whatever, just pluck at leaves, watch a bug and dream away. The last week or two, i didn't feel like doing any major chores anymore and i just left it. Plenty of food, let's stop here and just potter around for a while. Never got this far either. Took me 4 years to clear the place and get 5 small raised beds in, which covers 1/4 of the garden, this winter/spring i did the entire rest of the garden. I'm amazed actually.

Hey, just watched your video and we are not sure what zone you are in but have a question regarding the Chicago fig...need ideas ours is pathetic. Did you make a post about how you grew it already...because our zone 5 mtn has happily given us 3 incredibly tiny leaves and we are sure it could be doing better than that..Also, regarding your tomatos in pots..not sure if you have dollar tree stores near you but if you can access a cheapie store that sells windshield visors for vehicles cheaply, then you can use those to wrap your black pots not that summer is in full swing and really cool things off. Basically a thick mylar material but easier to work with. I even use it in my beds to cool things off as our sun is beams at an incredibly hot angle all day long here. Sometimes even use a bowl or bucket of water in the empty space to cool things off though biointensive gardening might be wiser. Water is a big limitation for us...no hose, just big barn far away...and no developed irrigation system yet..just lots of buckets and containers hauled around. Thanks for insight o the grapes too.

your garden is my inspiration! thanks for sharing! I have been thinking of planting grapes. I saw grapes at a garden center, are those usually hardy to zone 3? anyways, my favorite part of gardening are seeing fruit and vegetables start flowering!! I do have a question. can you use cut grass to mulch vegetable bed? my grass is inundated with dandelions so I don't know if this is a good idea. THANKS!! BTW, I have been harvesting my strawberries. I have been getting 1 bowl full of strawberries 2x per week!! the best part is that my nephews loves harvesting them with me!! ☺

My favorite "task" is to plan the next expansion. Im not sure if the next step is more trellis, Beneficial bug habitats, or maybe putting down a better pathway between the beds. I love to build and watch not only my plants grow, but the whole yard becoming more usable. Im on 1.223 acres, and barely have 350sq ft of garden plus a few dozen young trees(this is their second summer, and I havent noticed any fruit).

***** More trees. at least 3 fig, 5 more apples, and a couple pears. I love to make pear brandy with the pear grown in the bottle.
Also non-fruit trees. Mimosa, willow, and theres a native tree around here that has a silver color to the underside of the leaves that I always like. Forgot the name, but thats nothing new.
Of course, Id need some irrigation in some areas, and probably a deck or gazebo. Plus more rain collection(7500L would do), a few more garden beds, another bat house, swallow nest structure, a water well(irrigation not drinking), some privacy hedges/screens, more honeysuckle, and probably a few other things.

Hi Stephen. Love all of your videos. I have a question not related to this video but more to your tests on different garden products, etc. I have a terrible slug infestation in my garden and yard. They've been eating my hostas for years and I let them, but now that I have a vegetable garden they are making the journey there. I see many slimy trails across my brick border and many slugs in my beds eating greens, etc. I would like to use sluggo in my garden ... the container says it's OMRI listed, but is it really safe for my soil? Is there residual I should be concerned about? Or would there be a buildup of iron? Maybe a subject for another video?? :)

Did you remove the tomatoes yet? If not just leave them for a few days to see what happens.
we just got one heck of a storm too

+Alberta Urban Garden Simple Organic and Sustainable Didn't remove them yet, I am still slightly hoping but they are dead :(
We had almost every day storms last week, a few hail storms too...some weird weather came from austria to hungary and then to Romania, now it's hot and humid like in the tropics, we are sweating like mad...
I will probably plant carrots because I don't have any and maybe some more beetroots :)
Radishes/spinach on this heat...not sure they would work?!

yup they will germinate in a few weeks and do frailly well. Interesting note things don't bold due to heat. They do so because of the length of sun exposure and if it is increasing or decreasing.
give the tomatoes at least 10 days to see if they will recover. Tomatoes with a good root system are stubborn and can grow quickly.

+Alberta Urban Garden Simple Organic and Sustainable They are burried very deep and have been pruned to bush out (and oh brother did they bush out)
I will give them some time and we'll see what happens...
the flooded garden got me thinking I might need raised beds in the end there where it flooded at least, I have a small lake in my garden :))

That is a great reason to build raised beds! Might is suggest building them similar to my main beds. those will stand the test of time and be high enough for the water even when it ponds not to matter.

pruning tomatoes actually increases yield if you do it right

    • @AlbertaUrbanGarden
      @AlbertaUrbanGarden  8 лет назад

From what I have read it increases yields per square foot because you can have more plants in a smaller space. That is how I understand it. I would be interested to ready other sources !

right, in the video you said it decreases yields when you prune. I think it has more to do with how the plant diverts its energy and the fruiting ordering than the number of plants per square foot. Just do a simple test: prune a few plants and leave a few unpruned and then measure the yields. And do this without adding more pruned plants. So evaluate it on a a per plant basis instead of square foot basis..

That would be an interesting test! I certainly wish I had the space to test it! I will do some research on the issue!

I'm happy for you man. I'm a bit of a yoyo dieter trying to lose about 100 lbs so I see weight on people. I've lost 40 lbs, then put 30 lbs back on and now trying to lose again. Keep up the good work;)

It certainly is not easy and I crept up in weight over the years. I just need to be able to keep up with my son !
I know the struggle and I wish you luck my friend!
