Chicago was the original, and the one from which Lorne Michaels drew most of his cast for SNL, while SCTV mainly consists of Second City Toronto members. Rick Moranis was an initially controversial decision to join the cast of SCTV, primarily due to him not "paying his dues" by going through the Second City stage first, but when everybody saw his acting, all doubts were quashed.

    One more that is not on the list is Winnie the Pooh, sort of.
    A.A. Milne wrote the Winnie the Pooh stories for his son Christoper based on his teddy bear Winnie. Re: Bob & Doug McKenzie - they were originally conceived by accident. SCTV, a Canadian TV series, was produced for private television, but was picked up by the CBC (government-run television network). The CBC runs 2 minutes FEWER commercials per hour, so the series producers were asked to insert 2 extra minutes of new content per episode and..... since they were the stewards of Canadian television, they demanded that the 2 extra minutes be "Canadian Content".
    The SCTV crew thought this was ridiculous, so they came up with Bob & Doug as a bird-flip to the CBC for their ridiculous "Canadian Content" requirement. To their sheer astonishment, the Bob & Doug segments (originally "Kanadian Korner", later "The Great White North") proved to be the most popular part of the show. The show also ran briefly on NBC in the early 1980s. It also starred John Candy, Eugene Levy, Joe Flaherty, Catherine O'Hara, and Andrea Martin.
    The segment was so popular that it spawned a hit movie called "Strange Brew" (I highly recommend) as well as two hit music singles: "Take Off" (featuring Geddy Lee of Rush), and "Twelve Days Of Christmas" (".....and a beer.... in a tree!"). All are hysterical and all are available on RUclips.

    Dudley Do Right was a popular cartoon in the 60's. It was made in the States and was a spin-off of the Rocky & Bullwinkle Show featuring a wise-cracking squirrel and his sidekick Moose. Anne of Green Gables is a big deal in Canada and, apparently, Japan as well. I don't think it ever became very popular in the US though, because it's basically a Canadian version of Little House on the Prairie. I've been to Nova Scotia and the Trailer Park Boys are a pretty realistic representation of many people in the Maritimes. The show is popular throughout the southern states and the Midwest because the characters are similar to many of the trailer park folks there too. Bob & Doug McKenzie and SCTV were popular in the late 70's/early 80's. Fun fact: I taught Rick Moranis's niece at Queen's University in 2006. Ironically, Wolverine, supposedly a Canadian, is played by an Australian, Hugh Jackman.
    Again, you seem to think that Canada is such a vastly different, very "foreign" place from the US. If you actually visited here, I think you'd be shocked to find out how similar the people are in the two countries. Also, as little as most Americans know about Canada, conversely, Canadians know as much, if not more, about the US as mist Americans do. We get all the same movies and TV shows as you do.

    Second Cup is a coffee house franchise like Starbucks. It was started by a man who had been homeless and living on the street and he ended up creating a coffee house chain. The Red Green Show has a huge cult following in the US, but it depends where you live. Where hunting and fishing and hunting lodges are a thing, it's big. When I mention that show to certain Americans, they go bananas.
    Trailer Park Boys also has a cult following... it's a fake reality show. It's filmed as if these guys are filming a documentary about themselves and the trailer park where they live... gritty humour, makes fun of stereotypical trailer trash, has had some notable guest stars on it (as has Red Green). Benton Fraser in Due South deserved more than an honourable mention.
    Rick Moranis started out on SCTV (Second City TV), a direct rival (and frankly better show) to Saturday Night Live. Notable actors/comedians who started there were John Candy, Rick Moranis, Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara, and on and on. Rick was on SCTV before he was in Ghostbusters. I take it you don't watch a lot of PBS, they were the ones who showed Red Green, Anne of Green Gables, not to mention the DeGrassi franchise in the USA. Anne of Green Gables is considered to be "The great Canadian novel", it's popularity is World-wide (It's a true Canadian cultural idol and extremely popular in Japan) it was made into an American movie as far back as 1934 (The studio forced the lead actress to change her name to Anne Shirley), but, the best known version is the 1985 Canadian TV series, starring Megan Follows.

    I have to say that I never read the book, but being the father of three daughters I did see the series on tv. It certainly wasn't my first choice to watch on tv at the time. I must say I found the series to be quite entertaining and kept my interest. At the end of the series I couldn't help but think Anne of Green Gables is a captivating story and nobody was killed. Unusual at the time.

    If I could suggest a choice for Part 2, please check out a tv series from the ‘80s about a lone dog who travels the country and saves people from sticky situations. And it’s not a cartoon either. The dog is a trained stunt dog and is the central character of the show. It’s called “the littlest Hobo”.

    I grew up watching Steve Smith on TV. From his sketch show Smith & Smith with his wife, where a Red Green type recurring character first took shape. Then a short lived sitcom Me & Max. Max is the name of one of their sons, irl. Then there was a sketch show. I don’t remember the name of that, but one of the women on that one went on to become the younger aunt on Road to Avonlea. A series based on a short story of Lucy Maud Montgomery. Then came Red Green.

    @tyler - You should do a full react to "Strange Brew" the movie version of Bob and Doug McKenzie.
    Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis came up with the characters while on SCTV, because at the time, there had to be a certain amount of "Canadian Content" on TV, and SCTV (a comedy skit show) had to show that. They were annoyed by this, and decided to make the most over the top Canadian show possible.

    " Bob and Doug" are where the " Eh!? " and " Hoser " (dufus) became famous stereotype Canadian things.

    • @alanlafond9705
      @alanlafond9705 Год назад

      No, they were already existing Canadian stereotypes before Bob and Doug. That is why they were used as part of their personalities, because they were parodying Canadian stereotypes. And while I was never personally familiar with the "hoser" thing growing up, having been introduced to that stereotype by Bob and Doug, the "eh" stereotype was one I had been using since before Bob and Doug started parodying it.
