During my travels as a chimney sweeper one of customers was a welder and made a self contained buzz saw with a 7hp brigges a while back to clean up from a huge storm that went thru, after that it sat under a tarp for years until he showed me and offered it to me for a fair price . I striped it down, painted it , extended the table back and forward , added a return spring , a log stop to prevent rolling back off the table , new tires and a new crate 7 horse with 2 new belts . It’s my favourite tool in the wood yard and I’ve put about 50 cords thru on one sharpening ! I love buzz saws . Only dangerous if not respected.
A spring on the table is very important. I push with my knee most of the time, so I experiment with different springs so it pushes just right. My son did one and stacked two valve springs up and whew .....that got kinda tough to push a few thousand times in an afternoon. LOL. You mention one thing that detractors don't understand. We can cut tons of dirt fillled poles with no problem when a half dozen cuts with a chainsaw makes you stop to sharpen !! Very few people understand that. If ya know though, ya know. Thanks for one of the coolest comments today and I am glad to hear of your good fortune !!
I grew up hearing stories of how my grandfather's cousin lost a few fingers to a buzz saw so my grandfather never had one nor let any of us anywhere near one. Bucking up trees in the bush can be fun, tramping down/cutting brush that gets in your way, and a lot of bending down unless you have a long bar and the power to run it or are willing to crawl on your knees next to the tree as you cut. I've seen some old buzz saws with open blades run by flat belts that guys have ran for better than 50 years and still have all their fingers, whereas my grandfather has had a few nasty cuts from the chainsaw over the years. I might have to try one of these out some day!
Well, I'm one of those old guys that got over 50 years working with buzz saws that you describe. The most I've ever gotten was a splinter here or there. Now I gotta tell ya my one uncle got his bib overalls caught in the monstrously long 8'' belt we powered a huge Fisher and Davis planer with. It snagged his britches right off one leg and left his bare butted running for the house !! Got a good laugh that day. Good thing they were really old bibs and the tore right up or he'd have been in deep doo doo real quick.
Glad to catch this video. The local Amish use these for firewood. Usually a Honda is the source for power. BTW, meant to thank you and your wife for saving me hours of time while assembling my frontier os27! Have a great 2025, hope to see more of your videos in my feed.
This is strange, but I replied earlier today and it has disappeared. Thanks for mentioning the OS27 assembly video. I am glad it helped you in one way or another. I am planning on some upgrades this winter if time allows and if so there will be videos along with them.
Great buzzsaw video never gets old! At the end of last year after Christmas i cut about 1 and half cord of thin pole wood with my old electric powered buzz saw. It saved me more than 2 work days, otherwise to cut them with chainsaw at forest. Long poles are easier to load and transport. It's also cheaper to run for me. I think buzzsaw is most underestimated implement. Happy new year!
I agree with you 100%, they ARE the most under rated old machine. I'm glad to see you have an electric powered one. I'm assuming its got like a dual v-belt sheave running it off a standard motor of 5hp or so..?? Agreed too about blocking them up out in the woods. Too aggravating. Just haul a whole load of poles at one time back to the shop and buzz 'em off at your convenience. I hope all is well with you over there. Hopefully it will all settle down soon. Happy New Year to you as well my friend.
Thanks for the kind words Richard. We always store the limb wood near, but separate of the logs. When there's a big enough pile mixing in saw mill slabs the splitter gets pulled out and one of the saw rigs gets pulled in. That way we kind of keep a mix of the more preferable split wood AND the lighter buzz saw material.
As you already know Wendell, this is music to my ears! I hope to have a video coming out soon about my Dearborn buzz saw on the back of my 1940 9N Ford that does have the correct right angle drive. Love this Wendell!
I keep bouncing in and out of your channel keeping an eye out for the video...so I'm sure I'll catch it. In the meantime I have managed to come up with one too. But now my dearborn and ferguson are both converted. So now I'm on the hunt for another one to use correctly with it. LOL. ain't that a shame !!?
There's just something about paying for heat that sits crossways with me Gary. If all I gotta do is play with an old chainsaw, an old tractor and an old buzzsaw to get free heat, I am NOT gonna pay those rates for heat !! And that's that.
Hahahaha...me too David, but unlike Ted Nugent I've started wearing ear protection before I go totally deaf !! LOL. He's only lost it in one ear though. But yes, there's just something soothing about running these guys for an afternoon.
my dad had one of those saws mounted on the front of his Graham Bradly tractor it just had a platform that extended past the blade with no safety guard. My grandpa would drag long poles up from out of the woods and they would saw up a bunch of wood once grandpa got a big pile of poles ready.
Wendell I grew up 🆙 around the same old buzz saw . Still got it on the property it make for us guy . Saver them a chainsaw Wendell to run . Great video 😊
My Much Older Brother has our really old saw rig that we had on our Masssey Harris 101 Juinion. It was not a tilt-table like this one. It had a roller table, not like this one here with a tilt-table.
Enjoyed the video! I need to get my Dearborn saw out and use it, since I got the homemade saw I don't use my Dearborn much, but now I have 2 saws, 2 chainsaws and 2 tractors, I bought a 140 Farmall last spring, I just finished rebuilding the hydraulic touch control yesterday. It's supposed to be turning colder here and possibly some frozen precipitation next week, got to stock up more firewood. I hope you have a wonderful New Year my friend. I try to touch it up with a file ever so often. That's another thing guys that aren't around these rigs don't realize. Hahahaha...that's the point, and that's to make sure she KNOWS its all for her !! LOL. Hey, it works for me. Either that or she's a good actor. About using a chain saw on the branches, I get tired of all the bending over to pick'em up plus this way I don't accidentally run the tip of the guide bar into the dirt. We called it the idiot saw. Ours was built by Belsaw, but my brother has a Dearborn. His 800 Ford doesn't have a pulley. I hope you, and your Mrs have a Happy New Year Wendell.
Good Morning Bryce. Thank you and a Happy New Year to you and yours as well. I didn't know Belsaw made a buzzsaw, or if I did, it's something I forgot. Makes sense though because Belsaw made one of everything !! I sold my Belsaw sawmill a couple years ago. It was 32' long with a 48'' insert tooth blade. Right angle drives are out there, but you gotta look for them though. The one I put on m y 800 was a newer Massey Ferguson with just a bald casting, no connection point for the factory 'A' frame.

Usually, there's always the exceptions. But ours typically cures two years at the minimum once they go under roof. That BR would be perfect for a buzz saw, for sure.
Well it keeps me out from underfoot with the Missus and we get a little heat out of it so its a double win !! Thanks for stopping in with a comment today my friend.
I set most of the time with two ball pein hammers. Shoot for 25% of the blades thickness set on opposing teeth. That give us a kerf 1 1/2 times the thickness of the blades. Of course theres always the errant one or two you get knocked too far and you'll see a deep cut ever so often through the wood. But most of the time its pretty darn close.
I have one off an old JD down in the woods too. Its a sliding table instead of a tip table. I also have one off of the old Oliver two digit tractors as well. I hope your Much Older Brother is blessed with as good of heath as is mine. He's 85 and still cutting and splitting as necessary.
Originally I had a question I was going to ask but when you changed the camera to a new position I answered my own question. And at the 7:18 mark I would add that you were thinking outside the box. Who else would have thought of doing that?
Oh I'm sure others do it too, it's just that I've not seen anyone do it on videos yet. I usually keep the splitting maul in the woodshed when stacking these slabs. Just pop'em a time or two and go. But this is easier, then they are ready to stack with the rest.
Even blocking numerous ones at the bottom of the piles that have a good bit of dirt stuck in the bark, I usually only have to sharpen once a season unless I hit metal. But a 16d or 20d spike still really only knocks two teeth, maybe three. But I keep an eye on the tips of the teeth and when the tips are shiney it'll touch 'em up with a file. Just a couple strokes usually. Here's a video on re-shaping teeth and evening up the gullets if you like: ruclips.net/video/06hJGTyCPqM/видео.html You can skip to 3:20 for the layout.

The thing I preach all the time is to keep the area around your feet cleared Clarence. It's so easy for a person to slip or turn an ankle on scraps laying there. Yes, the little Massey Harris 30 does in fact have a muffler on it. And yes the DO sound much better with a straight pipe but now I wear VA supplied hearing aids and I kinda like the muffled sound better now. I run straight pipes on all the bigger tractors for the reason you say. They breathe much better unrestricted, for sure.
Did you make the extension on the table top? Neither of my saws are like that. The table ends at the blade. I see how it can be MUCH handier to have an extension.
Yes. Actually my son repaired the old rotted one I was using when this one was left at his house to clean up his wood pile. He made it extend 16'' past the blade for referencing length.
At wide open throttle, it'll spin the belt pulley at 540 rpm. So the calculation for arbor speed begins with that. Once you determine the arbor speed, the rim speed (feet per minute) of the saw can be figured with the diameter of the saw blade. Or use the number of teeth of the blade to calculate the cuts per minute like you would with a planer. So Reg, math is the answer to everything. I should've listened in school...(-:
@@regsparkes6507 Some of the other tractors have two and three speed pto's. The 1010 JD has 540 and 1080, the littlest Kubota has those two plus a super high one. I don't remember but I'm thinking its 1500. Might be off on that one. I never use it at all.
That one was one of several Massey Harris 30's I use as daily drivers Tony. The Farmall H has been resting for quite a few months now. I have another one I converted to three point that has stayed mounted on the Kubota B7100 for probably close to 10 years now.
Good day from Ontario. Yea we had saw on wheels but neighbour had ford 8n with 3 pt Insurance told us ,if we burn wood look for new company! How many acres bush have u got. Boy Mennonite neighbours when they put up new house , no chimney burn gas or propane Ths
Yeah, insurance companies all are a rip off. Any excuse to not cover a situation whether its a house or a vehicle. My auto insurance is denying a portion of my claim on an accident right this minute !! I follow GPOutdoors from central Ontario. What a super good guy he is.
Hahahaha....yeah buzz saws are like a alligators or crocodiles. Just don't get anything they want to eat too close to their teeth. Steel teeth eat meat just as easily as real teeth !! On a good note I've not been bit by any of the three yet.

@@tractorman4461 540 RPM will do,..I should've listened too.😂
@@regsparkes6507 Some of the other tractors have two and three speed pto's. The 1010 JD has 540 and 1080, the littlest Kubota has those two plus a super high one. I don't remember but I'm thinking its 1500. Might be off on that one. I never use it at all.
I was wondering, which tractor were you using on the buzz saw?
That one was one of several Massey Harris 30's I use as daily drivers Tony. The Farmall H has been resting for quite a few months now. I have another one I converted to three point that has stayed mounted on the Kubota B7100 for probably close to 10 years now.
Good day from Ontario. Yea we had saw on wheels but neighbour had ford 8n with 3 pt
Insurance told us ,if we burn wood look for new company!
How many acres bush have u got. Boy Mennonite neighbours when they put up new house , no chimney burn gas or propane
Ths
Yeah, insurance companies all are a rip off. Any excuse to not cover a situation whether its a house or a vehicle. My auto insurance is denying a portion of my claim on an accident right this minute !! I follow GPOutdoors from central Ontario. What a super good guy he is.
A tablesaw is plenty dangerous........that thing with so much exposed blade.....yikes!
Hahahaha....yeah buzz saws are like a alligators or crocodiles. Just don't get anything they want to eat too close to their teeth. Steel teeth eat meat just as easily as real teeth !! On a good note I've not been bit by any of the three yet.
