Short circuit is not the best solution, 'cause the other LEDs will get higher voltage, than normally, and the bulb will go wrong shortly. The best is to change the wrong LED. But be careful! The LED must be the same voltage as the wrong one. If you insist to short circuit, why don't you use a soldering iron. My opinion is: if somebody doesn't have a soldering iron, he shouldn't repair electrical things.
I suggest using a soldering iron for a more precise repair 🔧💡.
👍
Good luck with "change the wrong LED". People would have no idea how to do that. Was it a 2812? 2814? And, 99.9% of the public wouldn't have a clue about LED polarity. @timbob987 got it right: "Go buy a new $2 bulb" and just screw it in. This is a perfect example giving rise to the old cliche: "Penny wise; pound foolish."
This is a how-to video for cigarette smokers. 😆
I was going to say this. However, you beat me to it. Series circuit/Ohm's Law.
So let me get this straight. To get less light, potential danger and waste my time, I need a razor knife $3, super glue $2, pack of cigarettes $10 and a broken $2 bulb. Savings $-13. Think I will just go buy a $2 bulb
AND the risk of slicing off your finger with that utility knife!
It's not necessarily the money it is about but having skills. It's good to be skilled and be able to fix things.
For example I found a video showing to use bicarbonate of soda together with super glue to achieve a plastic-like very strong adhesive.
I tried it out on the socket of my guitar amp (Laney IRT Studio) where I clumsily tripped over the guitar cable twice and broke the input socket.
Worked marvelously and I have a fully functional input without any real fuzz like soldering, ordering new parts etc.
Absolutely right
It's reassuring to know that there are still some people around with common sense. The rest have probably electrocuted themselves.
ä
It would be so much easier to just either replace the bad LED or solder a bus wire across the terminals.
Replacing the bad LED or soldering a bus wire can definitely work too! 😉.
@@CreativeMaster999 What everyone appears to have missed is the fact that he's destroyed the acrylic diffuser
Alternatively you can (1)pop to the shop for a new one in less time, (2) keep some bulbs in a cupboard(3) take one out of a lamp or less used room. (4)go borrow one(5)light a candle for the time being(6)use a torch(7)go by the light of a tv for temporary light,(8) etc etc etc..! All of which are quicker/easier/ safer than this. In what circumstances would you need/or even want to do this?
''Thanks for the suggestions! However, if you want to see a cool trick with super glue and LED bulbs, check out the video! 😉🔧''
Thank you for showing how to get the bulb apart. You are the first one I have seen doing it. So I'll tell you my secret. There is this new fangled stuff called "wire" . You can get wire at hardware stores or Walmart (in the electrical isle). You can then solder it between the two contacts. Or (now say O00h ooh like Maynard G Crebs), you could buy lots and lots of LEDs on ebay or Amazon, and just solder them into place. I'll admit, it does take a bit of skill to solder surface mount LEDs though. The wire shorting method is better if you don't have the skills, the little black bugs next to the LEDs should be current controllers, so you don't have to worry about over currenting the LEDs. When testing the LEDs, try pushing down on the bad one, it just might have a bad solder joint that needs to be reheated.
That's a creative idea! 💡 Thanks for sharing your secret tip! 🌟
You are increasing the voltage across the remaining LED’s so they will fail more quickly. And using paper masking tape as insulating tape.
I’m amazed you’re still alive.
Exactly
Nope, LEDs are usually driven by current stabiliser. So shortcuting one diode should never mind for short time.
BUT the tweezer with glue tape is something extraordinary dangerous. Do you know that this is a work under voltage that ONLY professionals are allowed to do?!? Has this tape certified insulation for 230V? Using multimeter without main power source is without any danger.
Also it is a nonsense to use knife instead of soldering device :(.
This guy is gonna get someone killed. It's not even worth the effort. These bulbs are less than $2 USD now. Any yes. The more LEDs you remove from a designed circuit, the harder the remaining LEDs are driven. This is a fool's errand.
@@dzdg6mmdzdg6mm You are wrong, these are cheap devices and rely on the correct supply voltage to limit the current. You are correct that leds are current operated devices and a typical led requires about 3 volts dc to ensure the correct current. 12v across 4 leds connected in series, which these plainly are, allows the correct current to flow. Shorting one out puts 4v across each of the remaining leds and increases the current through them resulting in premature failure. There is no current limiting circuitry built in that would allow you to short circuit one led and keep the current constant. This would mean a pointless increase in manufacturing costs. You can easily find circuit diagrams of this type of lamp on line which will tell you everything in more detail.
Since writing this I have been thinking. There is a 1 m ohm resistor in the mains supply to the rectifier. This means that if you short circuited all the LEDs the current flow would still only be 24mA. Maybe it would work.
@@dzdg6mmdzdg6mm The LEDs operate at low voltage DC. Probably about 5 volts, 12 volts MAX and obviously low current. The part he is working on is all DC. Think about it. If it is a 10W bulb how much voltage and current is that?
Nothing else to do in your lifetime but repairing a bulb risking an electric shock or house on fire?
Just put super glue on the LED bulb and avoid the hassle of repairs and risks! 💡🔧
If these bulbs are so crap that one LED fails, then it won't be long before another fails, even without the extra load.
And using tape as insulation on tools? And a box cutter aimed directly at the thumb? Some people should not be allowed near tools.
The repair hack with super glue is a game-changer! Just be careful with those tools 😉🔧.
@@CreativeMaster999 Good Job. Thanks
You can also mix gunpowder with graphite, it will glow better🤣🤣
in effects....🤔
You'd better using some dynamyte...
Falsche Aussage
Gleicher Strom aber höher Spannung = höhere Leistung
P= U x I
In dem vorliegenden Fall erhöht sich die Spannung um 1/8 an den verbliebenen LED's
Get a new light bulb and don’t worry about your house burning down.
Or make yourself a durable and fail-proof decent led circuit drive. Lamp manufacturers insist on not making a durable and fail-proof LED drive, profiting from millions of consumers. Led lamps are extremely sturdy if paid due technical respect. The Achilles heel is on the circuit made to fail prematurely.
New light bulb is cheaper than the pack of Winstons you had to buy to get the foil.
nonsense on the house burning, if worst case the short you make will burn open and cause no damage since it is encased in the bulb. This is a neat trick.
I saw directly that the LED near R6 at the first Bulb and D5 at the second bulb is defective. The black dot of burned bond wire in the middle of the LED told me. I didn't have to gamble with my life. Repairing an LED bulb in this way is just wrong. Simply bridging a defective LED can cause the other LEDs to receive more voltage and therefore burn out quickly.
Repairing an LED bulb in this way can cause other LEDs to burn out quickly. Make sure to check for defects before attempting any repairs! 🛠️
Exactly! Sloppy, poor, dangerous job! Do not do it!
@@igornapoleao4120 Sloopy, poor and dangerous, great title for a song.
I like the idea though I would solder a wire across the contacts, the idea of fire is nonsense. Voltage across LED is low.
The best example of how NOT to solve this kind of problem.
as soon as they started cutting it off with a razar knife i knew this was dumb
Adding super glue to your LED bulb will indeed have negative consequences on its performance and lifespan. It's best to avoid trying this method for the sake of your device 🔋.
If you can't afford a $2 light bulb, you can't afford your house, or someone else's house, burning down. Turn off the lights and go to bed.

Which side do you put the glue on? We tried this with horse dung last year. The bulb is yet bright. Lights up the whole barn.
That sounds like a unique experiment! 💡🐴
It is debatable whether after shorting the damaged diode, the voltage of the others will rise. There is an electronic device, which is under the board and not visible, and which reduces the voltage from 220v ac to about 12v dc and also maintains a normal current through the diodes.
Another point is that graphite may not be suitable for wire, but metal tinfoil is.
It's possible that the voltage of the other diodes may rise after shorting the damaged one, but the electronic device under the board helps maintain normal current through them. Metal tinfoil may be a better option than graphite for wiring. 😉👍.
If a fire or electrical shock is caused by this tutorial you maybe have a problem.
Also with the Winston cigarette advert 😁

Well, the pencil graphite will act a resistor, which will mimic the missing led , so it's not exactly like a short across the bad led terminals. Ty first time I've seen inside the LED bulb. ;)
That's interesting! Thanks for sharing your insight 🤔👍.
Better to buy a new one and save all this time cutting and gluing, it's not safe.
Just give it a try and see the magic happen! 😉.
Absolutely safe, but instead of shorting it connect a one or two ohm , 1/4 watt resistor across the point.
You have no other solution but to do this when you run a short budget. But yes. Precautions should be taken to avoid cutting yourself.

@@CreativeMaster999 A Led Bulb is to cheap.......
@@CreativeMaster999 What does Super Glue have to do with anything. This is no different than fixing a bad bulb in a string of old-style Christmas lights. 50 years ago, people found the bad (open circuit bulb) and placed some metallic lead "icicles" in that light's socket to create a short-circuit and then just screwed the bulb back in. This is, electrically speaking the equivalent of what is suggested and done here. That is, the LED has failed and is creates an open-circuit resulting in the rest of the string of LEDs to be un-powered and go out. The suggested "fix" demonstrated here is to close the open-circuit by placing aluminum foil or conductive graphite (pencil lead) to produce a short circuit in place of the bad (open-circuited LED). It's not rocket science and far from being anything new. Little kids (with short circuits between the ears) do stuff like this all the time. Fathers end up with the consequences. 😞
