Ok - I now have a new thing I need to learn to do - and master! Thank you so much Ms Hazel for posting a new way to make granny squares that I'd never seen! :) *excited*
I just bought a beautiful little 4-inch loom similar to this one from Dewberry Ridge. They have a booth with their handcrafted looms at Silver Dollar City this fall. Your video is just the best for learning how to do the basic square. Thank you!
Great instructional video, thanks so much! I saw one of these things at my local LYS, but she only had one so it wasn't for sale yet, so I bought one on etsy, and now I'm confident that when it arrives I'll be weaving like a pro. New sock blanket, here I come!
Thank you so much. I it into weaving at my school. I've only worked on a floor loom before and was gifted with a large square loom. I'm on break right now, so I couldn't ask my teacher how to use it. Thank you so much for this educational video.
after my granmother died in 2001 mom and i found one of thesein her yarn bag, mom never remember how to use it but thanks really really thank u now i know how to and i will make a blanket with the squares and maybe some motif on it :)
I made several failed attempts at weaving these. Everytime, I would do over , under just as you said in the video. (small screen does not help) After several rows something would go askew. I finally realized, when you say over, under , you are not referring to the yarn that comes in on the left (like reading-left to right) but you are referring to the opposite side where the crochet hook comes in. If following the natural path of the yarn, it would be 'under-over'. I ended up buying a manufactured loom because I assumed I had done something wrong with the 2 I made. Now , that I understand (no previous weaving experience) I can weave a nice square in 1/2 an hour for a 12". They are fun and come out pretty.
You don't really need a 'knack' which is why this is so easy. Grab you loom and start! But no room at the inn to adopt you, You'd have to sleep in the dog's bed and she wouldn't like that!
O i just got it you can uses different shaped nail configurations of different shapes to weave any kind of shape in your case diamond turning a square. So the square vertical or horizontial weft/warp machines can be rotated to give different shape. nice this looks almost the same as bobbin laceing technquies. This opens new worlds to traditional weaving of weft and warp being always horozontial or vertical to each other.
You could, but I doubt you'd want to. Much better to work in smaller sizes. I made mine using the 14" square. Turned out quite nicely. If you want to make "bolts" of fabric, buy a floor loom.
Do you make your own looms? I am having a hard time finding them where I live and have found some online but I'm not sure which are good or not. Thanks for your help! I'm dying to try my hand at weaving on square and tri looms!
Quite alright. I understand that. You cam have great fun weaving on cardboard looms that don't cost anything. Google "Weaving on a cardboard loom". Be sure to look at "images", too!
@TypsyF0x Well, sorry you didn't buy your loom for me, too, but I hope you enjoy it enough to come looking for more sizes and shapes. Come see me first next time! Hazel
Quick question, is it possible to make a bolt of fabric using this method? If there was a big enough square loom and enough thread, someone could eventually make a bedspread, right?
You can find both on my web site, shown on the card at the start of the video. We make the looms ourselves and you r looms comes with all you need to start weaving. All that is, except yarn, you supply that but everything else is there and You can email me anytime with questions or check back to these you tubes. @ParadiseofFibers The looms are wood, so I'd be careful trying that. I think you'd be better off taking it off the loom to wet finish.

@SuperHife Yes, we do make them. They are all good. You can order then on the web site, If yo live out of the USA email me first for shipping.
