Why would you be proud of something like race or heritage? You had no control of your heritage, it was an accident of birth. Don't see why anyone would be proud of that. Do you walk around saying you're proud to be 5'5"? I suppose not. Do you walk around saying you're proud to have a predisposition for skin cancer? No, it's a genetic accident you had no control over, just like your racial heritage. And we have absolutely nothing to do with the songs, discoveries, and triumphs of those that have gone before us. So reserve pride for your own accomplishments in life.
Ken Follett's The Evening And The Morning brings me here. That timetraveller's experience is brilliantly backed up by Peter Horn who sets authentic atmosphere inbetween moments of reading.
The bass rhythm played with one hand is interesting! And wonderful to recognize the melody from "Sumer is icumen in" in the later tune. Thank you for sharing!
Oh yes, because Britain is the only place in the world with white, Anglo-Saxon descendants... You people are paranoid. Ever notice how animals don't give a shit about "races"? Because: 1. They don't perceive or care about race and 2. They are only concerned with personal survival and the survival of their SPECIES. The human species should be no different.
This seems to be a lyre or lyra. The latyer english lyre that is cello like base instrument (that is similar to the lyra de bracchio that is one of the ancestors of the violin) actually is the same instrument you are playing but then changed so that is works better as a bowed instrument (in several steps starting with a.o. medieval the Lira d'esperia) Kind of difficult to keep track of everything that is happening in Europe concerning string instruments that often are played with the hands (eg vihuela da mano not be confused with the Viuola da bracchio) and bowed as well. This type instrument also has some variants that were bowed!
A sunny, warm dry day in England. My that's a rarity. Just goes to show how bad it must have been in the Netherlands for Horsa & Hengest who decided to stay after whipping up on the Picts. But then again, Vortigern didn't hold up his end of the bargain, so what we're they supposed to do? At least Britain wasn't flooding out like their homeland was. The rest is history and what you hear in this video is a good depiction of the Angles, Saxons and Jutes.
Dear Peter. I am reading part of Dream of the Rood for a video I'm making for Holy Week. Would I be able to use your harp playing in the background with credits given?
This was a thousand years after the Romans fell, but still a thousand years ago. It just goes to show how long ago the Romans existed, and how long England has been inhabited
If you watch RUclips much, check out Time Team, they have scores of video about old england and how it really was. Rome came and went from England over about 400 years. That would be about twice as long as America has been a country. HAHAHA

I'm only 647 years old, but I love this Anglo-Saxon harp music!
Respect for the nameless forefathers in elder days.
this is amazing, the folk culture english is very nice
I imagine King Alfred was doing this, distracting his attention from the cakes!.
Sounds like a harp, banjo and guitar all one to me.
Crywth
Well that's a lyre for you!
Something special about the Anglo harp, it has such a uniquely earthy sound. if mother earth would play anything, it would be this.
Proud to be anglo Saxon
Despite having a Norman/Breton surname?...
How many people around the world claim to be Irish but have an English surname.
KampfGruppeLehr88 I'm Kiwi, but I have a feeling my surname is Gaelic
KampfGruppeLehr88 I have an English surname but I'm literally a test tube baby, so I guess I don't count

Lovely! Love the quickly-strummed "drone" you get...you'll have to do an instructional video for us on that...
Similar to playing chikari strings on a sitar.
A Crywth might be more authentic
The bass rhythm played with one hand is interesting! And wonderful to recognize the melody from "Sumer is icumen in" in the later tune. Thank you for sharing!

Reminds me of when my class went to an anglo saxon reenactment village thingy
It would be called a thorp, a ham or a ton.
One of our FAVORITE sounds. Thank you for this! 🖤
He's like the Anglo Saxon Johnny Cash
"I shot a man at Edington just to watch him die..."
Eleanor Taylor 😂😂😂
Great playing,lovely instrument,Peaceful
the sound of this just makes me shed tears and pulls at places in my heart. preserve our race
David Jones You heard what he said, ingrate. Preserve your race.
Well said. We have not inherited England from our ancestors, we have borrowed it from our children.
I don't think our race is on the endangered list...just saying.
Nathan McDonald you want to tell us the prediction for Britain's demographics by 2060?

Beautiful....

Absolutely brilliant
That is phenomenal. What tuning are you using?
Proud to be Anglo Saxon, Ferwerda.
I'll probably build my own lyre at some point.
Crywth
Can anybody give me more information on what is he singing or any transaltion? Thanks
this is great
My distant Anglo Saxon spirit is summoned
How authentic is this copy to the one found in Trossengen? I am curious, cause your thick string is on the right side as you face the lyre.
That is a copy of the sutton hoo lyre
Really interesting.

Brilliant.
Awesome.

I wish we lived in more natural surroundings sometimes, even though I wouldn't survive a week!
Did this man just play blues?
This was a thousand years after the Romans fell, but still a thousand years ago. It just goes to show how long ago the Romans existed, and how long England has been inhabited
It's a recreation that could be as little as 100 years post Rome's fall (Kingdom of Wessex was formed in 449)...
If you watch RUclips much, check out Time Team, they have scores of video about old england and how it really was. Rome came and went from England over about 400 years. That would be about twice as long as America has been a country. HAHAHA
Britain's Hidden History channel is interesting.

Definitely influenced by the native Briton culture.
Notice the playing with nails rather than fingers or a pick - that is a Welsh trait.
The ancient Britons were playing this music for millennia before the Roman and eventually the Saxon came to this island.
