As a Polish 90s kid, I used a Zenit with a 44M-4 as a toy for years and it’s still working. I’ve just ordered a M42 to NEX adapter to mount it to my Sony a7IV and can’t wait to give it a second life 📸
Nice work, I enjoyed your video and your style. I’m definitely going to buy one of these helios lenses. I hope you will create more videos, very high quality content!
Hahaha! I love the intro, it was hilarious! I just got the lens last night, after watching so many videos about it on RUclips, got it for about $189 on eBay, exactly like yours, with the anamorphic mod. I'm using it on an EF mount, my MarkIV. Now although I have a few quite good cinema lens (not that expensive), but this is beautiful. I'm going to shoot something nice with it! Great video though!
Great info. Thank you! I have a "native" Helios from my 1980s Soviet days camera (Zenith). It is Helios 44M-6. Do you think it has the same characteristics as 44M-4? I am planning to mount it on my Panasonic GH5 for videos. Do you know any bloggers who compare different types of 44M?
That’s amazing! I can’t say I know much about the other Helios 44 lenses and I’ve never owned any others, but I do know that the glass is practically the same through the different variants. Some have more aperture blades than others, but optically they should be similar. Sadly I don’t know many other people who talk about these lenses.
I got a nice condition 1980 KMZ factory 44M for £20 at the end of 2024, amazing value. It sucks, and it's fantastic at the same time! I use it for stills, it's very quirky but fun. I don't think it's any less swirly than any other 44 - Simon's Utak channel did a test and they all were roughly the same. It's just that only certain distances and subjects produce the effect. Really good review man, much more entertaining than most, thanks for the laughs. Don't worry your acne will go soon!
I'm pretty sure the number of blades changed, first iterations had 13, then they changed to 8 or 6. The toneh on the helios is superb, as is the bokeh and I don't care what anyone says. Simon Utak did a very thorough analyses of the 44 series side by side and guess what- they all have virtually the same swirl.
Hi, great job! I was looking to either buy one or adapt my 44m-4. I'm planning to buy some anamorphics in the near future, but it's not the right time yet. In the meantime this Helios cinema mod would be a great addition. by subscriber n.37.
Thank you for the video. It is incorrect to say - a Russian lens. There were many republics and many nationalities in the Soviet Union. It is better to say the Soviet lens.
Hey everyone! Russian filmmakers here! To learn more about vintage Russian lenses, then write to me. I have a friend who makes a custom mod for vintage lenses!!

Great video! It's really inspiring to see other creatives with small channels producing the kind of content that I want to make.
I appreciate it! Make the kind of content that you wish existed!
@@devinholzThanks! It's really amazing that we have all this equipment and software nowadays that really just frees us to do whatever we imagine.
I’m shocked at how sharp that lens is at f4! Looks razor sharp!

Thanks man! Appreciate it!
@@devinholz Very welcome!!
Once I got your sarcasm, I loved the video.
Thanks my guy! I appreciate it
Great video, very informative. Good that I found your review, coz I got the 44-2 and I was wondering what's the difference with 44-4.
Lmao intro is hilarious. Just ordered one of these excited to try it out
Thanks dude! You’re going to love it!
Haha! Nice video! Love that lens and I want to use it more! Thanks for sharing!
I’m glad you liked it! It definitely a fun lens
bro! my kind of humor! The audio and music is awesome. Don't even have to mention the details of your knowledge!
Thank you!!!
WFO you can't really frame the traditional left/right composition. edges are always to soft as we see in your examples.
Why is the bokeh so much bigger on the 58mm.... surely the proximity effect alone is not THAT dramatic?
Honestly not sure. It does have some big bokeh

I’ll definitely have to take a look at that. Thank you!
The guy that sells the lenses on Ebay has a great channel on YT all about these lenses, great info there and tutorials.
I’ll have to check him out!
