Regarding Van Damme I know where Brian is coming from. In the 80's during VD's career there was no word of him actually fighting. The interviews with him mentioned a dance background and some bodybuilding. VD himself said he got into movies by approaching some producer and saying "I should be in movies" and then kicking right above the guy's head with that kick he holds out in the air. There was a video of him making an appearance at an event along with a champion kickboxer, both guys were in street clothes and they did a few seconds of playful sparring. VD's actually looked way more flexible. But again, no mention of competition. Don't know what the actual truth is anyway.
