I am really looking forward to the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. Already starting to see some. Yesterday evening in the moonlight I saw 7 meteors in 50 minutes.
Useful and well explained video as always. Looking forward to the peak of the Perseids this year but already watching the weather forecast anxiously! Wishing you clear skies 😀
Thank you so much, Alyn. It is amazing that the person that has taught me everything about landscape astrophotography gives me first place. Thank you so much!!
Greetings from New Zealand Daniel, thanks for sharing your photography and congratulations! Are you noticing how odd it is that the moon is more often lit from more of a southern angle these days than the traditional east/west axis?
Thanks for you feedback Daniel. If you look at the moon phases Alyn includes at the 1.55 minute mark in his video you will see that the Sun always lights the moon from left to right. As in your photo the light is curving around the southern hemisphere of the moon. There is speculation that this is because the earth is tilting/wobbling, which alters our perspective of the moonlight. Recently the moon has been totally lit from the southern hemisphere which would indicate a 180 degree earth tilt. @@danielmunoz06
What I am looking forward to is a few nights without clouds or hazy smoke from the Canadian wildfires, this has been one of the worst years I can remember for an obstructed sky that I can remember.

Last night, Aug. 26 2023, while on a dinner cruise just off Nassau, The Bahamas, everyone was blown away by what i believe was a comet. It was in the north eastern sky. While we could still see the comet, a shooting star came behind. It was beautiful and breathtaking.
Im from Hull,in the UK I sat in my garden on saturday 12 Aug between(after the clouds had moved away) 11pm and 1am and saw over 20 shooting stars. 2 of them were yellow,2 left smoke trails and the rest were silver streaks.I missed a few as i poured drinks but 10 per hour i thought was worth the wait,it was a great display.
I get off work at midnight. The last couple weeks I've seen meteorites almost every night on my commute home driving dark backroads between Gainesville Tx and Pilot Point.
i live undr a rock so i dont hear much....went to local park smoke weed talking to my mom who not hear with us and i saw that chain of lights ...thought was response from my mom from other side...it appeared from no where and dissappeared..in the big dipper...so to me made it something....but if i didnt research this...i would ran with my thoughts and think something that never was.....wow. kinda hurt wasnt a sign from my mom but glad to know others saw this to.....like a falling star when you out by yourself...think did anyone else see this for that brief sec was anyone even looking? think you be the only one in the world to see it
I thought I was looking at a satellite; three times only to disappear. It was bright like the Sun shining on it only to disappear when the curvature of the Earth interfered.
My birthday is the 12th so I’m planning a trip to watch the meteor shower in Bryce Canyon (my name is Bryce and Ive never been and there’s not a better time than a meteor shower)
Question Alyn, from a not-so-bright subscriber: How can meteor showers be predicted? Lovely to see you looking well and happy. Thanks for WITNS for August.
Comets which cross through Earth's orbit leave a trail of dust and rock behind them. Earth then passes through that trail of debris roughly the same time every year as it orbits the Sun.
@danielnorman8595 The Moon has negligible effect on such a matter. Jupiter on the other hand can have an impact. It's believe the Taurids debris stream was split into two by Juptier's gravity, giving rise to the Northern Taurid meteor shower and the Southern Taurids.
Excellent description of how to view this month’s Perseid meteor shower. It’s much better in terms of providing important layman observing details than the one NASA posted.
What a wonderful video Alyn! Thank you so much! You have gotten me started in astrophotography and I love it! What USB power bank do you recommend for Sony A7R cameras in order to shoot star trails, time lapses, star tracked Milky Way images, etc? Thanks again for sharing your gift!
The term goes back to the 80s but its only in recent years that mainstream media have realised that they can increase public interest in a full moon by takng advantage of it.
I don't think that you need worry too much about missing the Noctilucent Clouds this year as for some reason there's hardly been any good ones. They have all been really far north except for one night but who knows as you do occasionally see them in August as well.
Okay, I'm a bit new to all this, but am I correct in assuming that this is for all of the Northern Hemisphere? I'm from the Netherlands, and I would like to know if these dates are correct for my location as well? Thank you for the great vid! :]
It’s not all for the northern hemisphere. But this is one of the best times for northern hemisphere skywatchers. And yes the dates are all the same when referencing the northern hemisphere
@@AlynWallace No measurable difference on the 2018 super-Moon (I was observing closely). What does that mean when the beggest Moon ever recorded has no effect on tides?
@@HAXXORAUDIO The Moon doesn't change size it's just a little bit closer to Earth than normal. But the tides are also affected by the Sun so it depends how the Sun alignment was at the time.
Hi Alyn thanks again for another great video! I am going to Aruba this week and I am trying to plan a Milky Way shoot. I have your book and love it however I only see recommendations for Northern and Southern viewing. I am closer to the equator and south of it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am planning to use Photopills for the first time. And I am not sure if I want to travel with my Sky watcher star adventurer and heavier tripod for it. Thanks again.
The Southern Hemisphere stuff will be practically what you will experience close to the equator. Polar aligning a star tracker might be a little difficult as the celestial pole will be very close to the horizon, but it's not impossble. Have a great trip.
Does that mean that you only ever looked at insta and twitter prior to the hashtags? I've been tagging on Facebook which now makes me feel old. Would've been just as useful in LinkedIn

Thank you Alyn for a very clear guide to observation. With respect to you, you will do well to make a study of the reality of the true sizes and distances of the heavenly bodies. You can learn this from Eric Dubay by going to his website and clicking on videos at the top of the page or better still to read his book "The Flat Earth Conspiracy." Should you do this then you are in for a shock! Why doesn't a super-Moon cause a corresponding super-tide ?
Supermoons do cause a high than normal tide. There are extra conditions for a super tide (Earth to Sun distance as well as Earth-Moon-Sun alignment)
