@Limelight13 they hunch forward because they lack the energy to stand up straight. Slouching over long term in a day puts pressure on your spine, your lungs, and all the rest of your interal organs. If slouching was the best posture we would all look like the hunchback of Notre Dame.
I think some science is getting mixed here. There is a position called "cart driver position"("Kutschersitz" in german idk whats the actual english word) which is used to relieve pressure from your auxillary breathing musculature by leaning forward and resting your elbows on your knees. This can help with asthma attacks,COPD and probably generally with breathlesness. Hence why people do it instinctivelyamd even when standing up sometimes leaning forward and resting the hands on the knees which is basically a modified version just standing. Id guess permantly sitting like that is not necesarry since the musculature can usually handle it by itself.

Obviously you shouldn't sit in a way that doesn't support your neck or not drink water, but yeah makes you question how many things you were told are just societal regurgitations not based on any actual science. Meaty toes is right about the posture thing. If you work out and train your muscles that will correct your posture. If you don't have those muscles it will be more comfortable to be slouched over or whatever awkward posture you have because that is what you are "made" to do. Do whats comfortable. everyones body is genetically different and thus have different strengths / weaknesses. If you work out that will make your body naturally have a better posture and feel comfortable doing it. if you have terrible posture that gives you pain then do some corrective exercises and see a physical therapist they will tell you which ones. But that is counter to the point of "do whats comfortable". There are weak positions for muscles but if you train those weak positions they become less weak. Same goes for flexibility. Dont get me wrong not looking like the hunchback as you age is a pretty good goal too. Take care of your back and train it with weights if you want life to be easier. developing your muscles will develop your posture. To counter sneakys point - no sitting in a chair for 12 hours a day in ANY position isnt healthy. But if YOU are comfortable and dont get sore afterwards then thats better than not being comfortable. Take care of your body and it will take care of you back.
