2:25 Hemolymph (the insect equivalent of blood) is actually the fluid pumped into those wings from the abdomen.

Excellent monarch video. Glad you show the instar stages 🐛. This past week October 1st I saw some Monarchs along with lots of other butterflies at Lake Lure Flowering Bridge in North Carolina. So inspiring!

I have collected caterpillars for many years but never was able to catch them as they changed into a chrysalis or emerged as a butterfly. Releasing them is always a thrill! Thank you for completing the journey from cat to adult! Im in zone 4 NH so we wait until June too to see the monarch return, Always a treat!

Thank you, Doug, for taking the time to record the whole process and provide comments at key moments. I’ve brought in a chrysalis (south of Ottawa) for the first time and had no idea what to expect, otherwise. I am so keen to see it happen. I suspect I won’t be able to sleep a wink the night before it ecloses. Cheers!

Amazing! I moved into a home in May and the neighbors told me the previous owners had planted milkweed and had lots of monarchs in the summer. I have just been enthralled with the whole process- from egg , to caterpillar, to pupa and then to the beauty of the butterflies. Although I’ve been watching the pupa in my garden, I haven’t yet witnessed this transformation so your video was very interesting. Thank you.

it must be dangerous for the butterfly, moving, byt unable to fly, a huge risk of being eaten during this phase

It takes two hours to expand and dry its wings I to had a pupa and it only comes out in the morning so reptiles dont eat them

I would like to congratulate and thank you for not only your dedication, but your attention to detail and perseverance throu what is this amazing metamorphosis. The time and energy that you have expended so that those of us that live in areas that are not as fortunate to say something so miraculous are able to witness it in the comfort of our own homes is commendable and downright amazing! I know sometimes people like to leave criticisms in the comment section, and I would not want to presume to even think of improving on what’s already amazing… As a video editor by trade as far as yours own personal sanity when things take a really long time, perhaps consider that ground music :-) this is not to say these videos are not already 100% great it’s just something that popped into my head while I was watching and thought I might share it because in the film industry collaboration is key. But I didn’t want to say a great and huge. Thank you for taking the time in the first place for me to even have the thought to share.

Watching the butterfly pump hemolymph into the wings is like watchin an airplane refuelling. Just saying.

I had caterpillars too and there are 25 of them. The species of my caterpillars are silvery checkerspots
