EXO's live "Obsession" performance is a live recording of their performance. Not only is their dancing amazing, but they are also singing live the whole time. It may be hard to believe because their vocals are so stable while performing this intense choreography, but as an SM Entertainment artist they have been training their whole career to build endurance and stamina in order to be able to sing live and continue to sound flawless while performing in concert for 3+ hours. That is one of the reasons why SM is known as the vocal powerhouse of the industry, because they put a huge emphasis on finding and developing amazing vocalists. Even SM's rappers get intense vocal training -- on top of being impressive rappers, most of SM's rappers could fill in as main vocalists as well. Now that you have seen the EXO version of EXO's "Obsession @the stage" performance, you also should watch the @The Stage (X-EXO ver.) and the (EXO & X-EXO ver.) performances. Just like in the MV, when you see the members in the black outfits they are EXO the good guys, but if you watch the X-EXO version you will see the members in bright colored clothing with wild hairstyles and crazy makeup who are EXO's alter ego clones. This was a just a special performance created as part of EXO's promotions for their "Obsession" MV and album. When Kpop groups release a new song and album they do all different types of promotional activities to keep fans interested and to get people excited in order to drive album and merchandise sales. If you can keep people talking about the song and album and get them excited about all the promotional activities, it;s most likely going to make people want to buy the album or purchase the song on streaming sites, so everything a Kpop group does is designed to be a marketing tool to sell more products. Plus, you also should see the behind the scenes of the filming of these stages, "EXO THE STAGE Behind The Scene". If you watch the behind the scenes footage you will see that Shindong from Super Junior -- a member of one of SM Entertainment's senior groups -- and his production company were the ones that directed this whole performance and video shoot. (Shindong and his company are also the ones that produce all of SM's @the stage videos.) In the behind the scenes footage you will be able to see how the EXO members kept up the act between the EXO and X-EXO stages and when they interacted with the audience in between the performances they pretended to be EXO during the EXO stage and they were their X-EXO characters during the X-EXO version. With 12,10,9 ,8 ,6 ,3, 2 or 1 member ,EXO always feels complete.Trust me EXO members are individually so talented that you are not gonna feel any lackings( obviously as a fan ,whenever we don't see all 9 of them together ,it feels bad) & to be honest just because you know Kai and Baekhyun that's why you feel they are the star or "the main guy" but it's not true.All 9 of them are stars and "the main guy" of EXO.But it's true that Kai , D.O and Baekhyun(sometimes) are the eye catching members for first time listeners. For exo you can say it's not the amount of the members that preforming but this is the quality of their preformances every and each of the members can do a lot as individual, you should check out exploration 5 where exo were preforming as 6 members and they did some songs there that they performed as nine in general and there just as six members and you would not notice that those songs originally performed by all 9 members

Due to some conflicts with company, 3 Chinese members left the group except lay. Now there are totally 9 members in exo. But since 2017, due to some korean chinese lawsuit, lay couldn’t promote with exo. He started his solo career and now he’s the top soloist in china. He’s still a member of exo though. He participates in few music videos after that. Thats why he wont be there in songs released after 2017. In 2019, exo started their mandatory military service with two of their members enlisted. Thats why there is only 6 members in obsession. Now 2 completed their service 4 still enlisted, 2 will enlist later next year probably. You can see a lot of changes in exo line up.
So there are different numbers of members because Lay, the only Chinese member left in EXO was not able to perform with EXO due to political conflicts between China and S. Korea, from 2017 on. So all MV's after 2016 won't have Lay in them (he showed up for a cameo shot in the Tempo MV, but his vocals weren't on the Korean track). And in Obsession, there are only 6 because Lay was still missing, and 2 of the members (D.O. and Xiumin) were serving in the military). I really enjoyed these stages and am glad you reacted to them. If you really pay attention to the choreography, you might be able to pick out the parts where they use their powers. The X they make to represent EXO is only the beginning of the story in their choreography. In "Monster" every move of the choreography has been designed to be an extension of their story. For example, D.O. has the power of earth (dirt) which gives him super strength, so during his part in the song and choreography you will see that he waves his hands and the other members are pushed away from him or pulled toward him. When you see Suho in the middle of the group and they have a hold of his arms, he rotates his body around like swirling water because Suho has the power to control water. Xiumin has the power to control snow/ice/frost, so during one part of the choreography you will see that each of the members pause as if frozen as he moves in front of them. Sehun has the power to control wind, so during his parts, you will see the other members shuffle around him as if they are creating a windstorm. And the part where they are sitting on the ground is supposed to represent a sundial -- EXO gets their power from the eclipse and their powers are affected by planetary and solar phenomenon, so the sundial is meant to represent the passing of time and their connection to the sun.

Exo has one of the best concept in kpop. Basically they have superpowers and fighting against red forces who try to use their powers by cloning them which you have seen in obsession. And their music videos mainly focus on their concept with minimal choreo. Thats why reacting to live is the best choice. Their vocals are too hard and complex. Its way too harder to dance that choreo and hit those notes. They are more vocally powerful. I suggest you to listen to their harmonies and notes more as its too hard even other rookies are scared to cover few of their songs. They are huge range of genres. Thats why they are still the kings. Exo has one of the best concept in kpop. Basically they have superpowers and fighting against red forces who try to use their powers by cloning them which you have seen in obsession. And their music videos mainly focus on their concept with minimal choreo. Thats why reacting to live is the best choice. Their vocals are too hard and complex. Its way too harder to dance that choreo and hit those notes. They are more vocally powerful. I suggest you to listen to their harmonies and notes more as its too hard even other rookies are scared to cover few of their songs. They are huge range of genres. Thats why they are still the kings.
