Putin’s Regime or the War: Which Will End First?

  • Anders Puck Nielsen’s RUclips channel ( / @anderspuck ) is one of the most popular military channels and focuses heavily on the military strategy in Ukraine and what to look out for next in the world of warfare. According to his apnielsen.info/en/frontpage/, Nielsen is “a military analyst at the Royal Danish Defence College,” and has “a background as a naval officer.”
In this exclusive Kyiv Post interview, Nielsen gives an outlook to viewers that may shock: Russia wishes to commit war crimes - and wants the world to know about them - as Moscow is seeking to challenge the international rules-based order. In that regard, Nielsen explains why the International Criminal Court arrest warrants for the Chief of the Russian General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, and former Russian Defense Minister, Sergei Shoigu, are so important to understanding Russia’s strategy.
As such, Nielsen asks, “How can a real, lasting peace be developed with a country that rejects abiding by rules?” Nielsen gives deep insight into what is happening now in Ukraine, how the war is developing, and highlights the risks that Russia will face ahead. Despite all of the outward trimmings of power, Nielsen feels that there is something rotten in Moscow and the ability for Putin to maintain power is far more limited than what many might assume.
    Anders can be followed on / @anderspuck , x.com/anderspuck?lang=en, / en , or via his fascinating newsletter - www.logicofwar.com/.

    Crimea is Ukraine 🇺🇦
    Luhansk is Ukraine 🇺🇦
    Donetsk is Ukraine 🇺🇦
    Zaporizhia is Ukraine 🇺🇦
    Kherson is Ukraine 🇺🇦
Ukraine gained its independence in 1991 after the collapse of the USSR. On December 1, 1991, 92% of Ukrainians who participated in a national referendum voted for independence. In every region of the country, including Crimea, a majority supported separation.
According to the US State Department, Ukraine has the right and opportunity to reclaim the territories currently occupied by Russia and restore its internationally recognized borders that it had when it became independent in 1991. This is a complex and delicate subject which involves many international actors. It is important to note that any resolution must comply with international law and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries involved.
Stand with Ukraine and peace to Pete.

Of all Europeans, Danes have the least in common with Russians. In the realm of warfighting Anders has knowledge, but he is not the person to listen to if you want to know what is going on in Putin's mind. Anders talks as if there is no danger of a direct Russia attack on the West in order to defeat Ukraine. It certainly is unlikely but it is much more likely to happen down the line that he implies, if he is right about the long term prospects of Russia in Ukraine.

The Russian imperial mentality is live and well till it comes to a crash. With this war Russia wants to assert its superpower status, even though it is in decline for over 50 years, secondly to send a message to China that territorial integrity of Russian Federation is not negotiable.
Conversely Russia today is a pariah country as international politics concern, the economy is under pressure from outside, the war is failure, with this war there is a risk of inner destabilization and a collapse becomes reality. The key issue here is Putin is losing control of the situation and it will end badly. The population itself is a critical issue whereas a population of 145 million people has 40 million of minorities, whereas the older generation still dream the old URSS and the younger want to be part of the West.

Of course there is a big difference in world views, but not between "the West" and Russia, because Anders should have pointed out that also the USA does not recognize the ICC and is therefore shielded from criminal responsibility for war crimes. Not just a theoretical possibility when we think about Abu Ghraib or Guantanamo Bay, for example.
The same applies to China, India, Israel and let's not forget Ukraine, which is also not a member of the ICC.

    • @AndyWoohoo666
      @AndyWoohoo666 День назад

I get your point and it's valid for sure but where there is difference is that regarding Abu Ghraib people was held responsible and brought to court. Also if America did the same as Russia their leaders would also be wanted by the ICC.
Then a deeper thing regarding this, Russia is a total different entity because of their history and their social heritage. Russia do not view things like the West or most other countries for that matter. Russia as a country is based on Serfdom and it has always been and that makes a huge difference. The problem is that not many people in the West understands Russia and what they are and by all means always been.
So study history and then the basis of social behavior/ meaning of social heritage and you might get a taste of what Russia is, was and always will be. You can only get Russia to listen if you have power superior to theirs, that's their mentality deriving from centuries of Serfdom.

I couldn't disagree more. Only 2 weeks ago the US was forced to blatantly ignore the ICC before the world when it had the Israeli Defense Minister, charged just like Gerasimov and Shoigu, over to Washington for talks trying to dissuade Israel from carrying out full scale war in populated regions of Gaza. Some day, perhaps after Putin is gone, the war in Ukraine will need some diplomacy even if the Russians simply withdraw as everyone here wants. There will still be issues that need settling such as the fate of Russian pipelines that cross Ukraine. If the ICC has issued arrest warrants for the Russian leaders at that time and they aren't simply ignored, diplomacy will be so much more difficult at that time.

Anders is a bit vague as to how Russia might collapse. The USSR collapsed as the result of an attempted coup against a reformist leader. Prigotsin's 'coup' was not a serious attempt to overthrow the regime, and Putin has brought all the remaining private armies under his control. Furthermore he has just carried out a purge of his top brass and replaced them with suits.
A collapse in oil prices could cause Russia to go into default on the debts they have built up to finance the war, but China would come to their rescue.
History shows that militaristic regimes can last a very long time, even under tough sanctions and in isolation - look at N. Korea, Iran, Myannmar. Russia will always be a threat to the world order. The West can't just wait and hope they implode - we know now what they want for us.

It’s baffling to me that people think this can be solved by just discussing where the borders are going to be.
Just to start a long war you need to motivate your population to participate and accept the hits to the economy and population. So a peace plan is also a political plan that needs to be presented to the population to justify the war and it’s ending regardless of it being positive or negative. But that hasn’t even covered why the war started in the first place. Which is usually a complex thing of power, resources, industry, useful population and useful territory to be gained or lost. And in this case also political messages, like if Putin cannot break the Western unity and international standings he stands to lose a lot more than he gains even if the territory remained as it is now.
There’s also considerations of “what could spark the next conflict?”. Making peace now and leaving a problem that can spark into another war is not peace but a temporary cease fire that can be exploited to train and regroup forces rather than be for the good of the people.
War can only end if there is no more reason for the aggressor to keep attacking, and the defender has no reason or will to become the attacker afterwards.

The ICC destroyed its respectability when it similarly charged Israeli leaders, forcing the US to demonstrably ignore it when trying to conduct diplomacy in the Middle East. The Israeli Defense Minister, who has been charged, was recently on a visit in Washington where Israeli tactics in Gaza were under discussion and the US made no effort to carry out the ICC arrest warrant nor would it be expected to since the US is not under the jurisdiction of the ICC, just like Russia. If, someday, both sides in the Ukraine War wished to have serious peace talks, the ICC charges could be as much a deterrent as they are in the Middle East.
