All the colors are just so happy! I have a very small sewing space and I live in the southwest where there is a LOT of enchantment (aka dust). So I store my fabric in plastic boxes with lids. All my yardage from 1/2 yard up I wrap on the comic book boards (BEST idea ever!) and store them in the Tall Shoe Box from The Container Store. They measure 13x7-1/2x8-1/4, so they’re just the right size for the mini bolts and since the box is clear, I can see from the top what is in each box. Plus, the cost of each box is only $5.79 so you’re not breaking the bank. All the boxes for neatly on a book shelf, keeping my little sewing area tidy and organized.

When I cut something off a yard of fabric, I put a note on it saying how much is left over - makes it easier down the road to know what I have.
Not only is it organized it's pure decoration to me.
Love all of the colors! Would love to see if you organize by project and how you stay organized once you start. I've been storing my fabrics for each project together so I have easy access to each :)
I don't really organize by project. I used to but then I would change my mind on what I wanted to make, so now I just have it all by designer like in the video. When I start a project I'll pull it out. I tend to work on one project at a time, so it's just on my table until I'm done. But in the past I've kept the cut pieces and fabric in zip loc bags if I don't finish and need to work on something else.

I use the comic book boards too, I always write the yardage on the boards so I know how much fabric I have since I also sew clothes, I buy different yardages all the time!
I like how you organize fabric. I like how you store the bigger pieces for backing. I plan to order some of those cards. I quilt and I sew clothes too. What I have for fabric storage is a cabinet with glass doors. Right now that dress, sundress, skirt, pants, etc fabric is piled in that pretty glass cabinet. I think the mini bolt way you showed is perfect for me to organize that fabric. Thank you for explaining your process. It motivates me to improve my storage for my fabric. Have a great day. 😁
I have been putting my scraps of yarn and small yarn ball in jars for years. I absolutely love it! Stuff in jars just looks so cute!! One day I'm going to own enough buttons to have them separated into jars!!!!

I kept my fabric that way for a few years but not any longer. I found that on the fold that goes round the card will fade and collect dirt. I have so many fabrics where this has happened, that i now keep them in enclosed baskets.

I also use storage from Target but, I also double stack my bins and for me it isn't messy! Thanks for the idea re: layer cakes.

I am trying to get organized. I made plastic canvas bins for my charm squares. They are so simple to make and you can see what you have. I have so many batting scraps. I put them in the space bags and vacuum all the air out so they lay flat and can be stacked until I am ready to use them. I love this system because I can use what I need then seal them back up. I love your craft room. It is so pretty.

Great idea. Do you put larger batting in space bags? I have thought of doing it since I have very little storage space but was reluctant to do it. When you take the batting out is it flattened?
@@debbiekortyna7711 I put just my scraps in bags. Some of my pieces are maybe crib size. I use 80/20 batting so it is already flat. The poly batting will return to it's natural state once out of the bags. It is a true space saver storing it this way. I use very large bags also. The blanket size work best for large scraps.

I love your fabric color selection. That is my favorite blue. I can’t have fabric sitting out like this because I have cats. They love to climb onto the shelves and their fur would be stuck to the fabric. Once my kids move out I will have a sewing room where I can leave them on display. IKEA shelves are the best though. All my stuff is in them but inside their canvas boxes.

I also fold any yardage that is 2 or more. I got the folding idea from another quilter here on RUclips. But, I use card board from my packages delivered to the house. I am green and love to recycle ♻️

I like this idea. Unfortunately it's not good for the place I am currently the bulk of my fabric. Having said that, I love it on the shelf on my desk. It not only keeps the fabric really neat, it creates color inspiration every time I sit at my desk. LOVE that.
I don’t have a Target or IKEA….or even Costco. No fabric at Walmart, only a few fat quarters. Your containers are great. I bought wooden bookshelves and use comic book separators …wrap smaller fabrics on them. Then I use paper clips to hold them nice and neat. My larger pieces are wrapped on cardboard bolts my quilt shop give me
Make a scrap quilt with all the tiny bits of material.
I don't know if there is a paper shortage but the comic book board prices are wayyy higher then $10 rite now... at my local comic shop they used to be 7.99 now it's 15.99 and Amazon is averaging 17-18$ for 100count pkg
I think part of it is the boards are being used by more crafting and sewing people. Driving up the demand and the price. It is a neat idea.
Any sturdy weight cardboard will work. Just cut to size.

I have a Billy Bob cabinet from IKEA that I have all of my yardage on a comic book board. I have two Hauga three drawer dressers for my fat quarter monthly bundles from Fat Quarter Shop. I also have two Hauga glass cabinets for all of my fat quarter bundles!!!

Hey Erica! Love the information about organizing in the sewing room! Question....if you have a fat quarter and let's say you've cut a ...2 inch strip does the balance of the fabric go in scraps or back with your fat quarters???
What I would do is: keep it with the FQ bin...until it gets down to 1/2... then I would store it with my Fat 8's... then as that gets smaller, into my scrap bin!
I would put that back in with my FQs.
Have you ever tried the trend of folding yardage onto Comic Book Boards? Just wondering if it is worth it,....and how much yardage can one actually fit onto one board?
Hi, yes, I show you how in this video at timestamp 5:30, I love using the comic book boards because it gives stability to smaller pieces of fabric. I use them on anything 5 yards and under. Once you get more than 5 yards it just seems pointless because it should stand up on its own depending on how it is folded. If you fold it like I do in the video it will stand on it's own.
Does your fabric get dusty being open? Also your room seems to have natural light, could there be an issue with fading of the fabric from sunlight?
No, I don't haver direct sunlight, we have a covered front porch so I haven't had any issues with fading so far.
I think I need to label my yardage, so I don’t forget what collection it goes with.
Hi, Erica! Great video! I have an unrelated (to sewing) question regarding home school...a few years ago you shared some information about using home school tracker software and I started using it years ago and then stopped. Now I am using it again, but I have forgotten everything!! LOL! I was wondering if you still use it and if so do you have any video tutorials? I have only found a few for getting started but nothing current for how to start a new year in the software (I have one year in there already) and how to use it for high school, specifically (I now have two high schoolers). Thanks so much!!
Hi, yes, I still use it, but it's super outdated and they don't support my version anymore LOL! But they do have video tutorials for their newer version on their website. To start a new year, you go into the "maintenance tab" then click 'new school year' and it will prompt you to add the dates for your new year.
I have a question...What kind of heating system do you currently have in your home or where these fabrics are stored ?? If you have gas heat, and store your fabrics this way, it will destroy them all! I was told to NEVER store fabrics this way. I didn't listen and had to learn the hard way. One day I pulled out some fabric to make a dress, as I unfolded it there were bleached out lines on the folds that had been exposed to the gas heat. Sudden my heart sank as I remembered those words. I started pulling stuff off the shelves and sure enough they were all ruined! I lost approximately 50 yards of fabric!!! Now my fabric is in a closet with the door shut and I still have my fabric on those shelves also, but now I made a clear plastic " curtain " that is attached with magnets so that I can still see and get inspiration from my stash without worrying about it getting ruined!
I have never heard that before!! Now I'll have to check all the fabric I inherited from my mother-in-law 😬
We have gas, but I've never had any issues with that, so far anyway!
And if you have a wood stove, soot will also collect on all the exposed parts darkening with stains. If this happens to anyone, oxyclean will get it out. But what a huge pain!

Lets be honest, if I never did anything with my fabric except bring it hone to display my room could look like thus too. But I cant afford to have this much unused fabric on hand. Instead I have scrap pieces that I fold and put into containers. If you never open your bundles it is easy to keep things neat
This is true! That is why I like the white Target baskets, it's easy to unbundle and then use and refold and store again while still keeping my lines together.
