  • Warner Bros Presents: PETULA CLARK, who is not much taller that a hyperthyroid fire plug, should look more Brünnhilde-ish. All that voice coming from that cuddly little thing. But the voice... she sounds like Lawrence Tibbett was her little brother.

Be sure to give some of her other Albums a good listen, since they are loaded with super tracks. Other artists have gleaned some of the better ones, like You're the One, and Call Me. They should have been hits for her. These are excellent albums: Downtown, I Know a Place; My Love/Sign of the Times; The World's Greatest; and the Don't Give Up/Kiss Me Goodbye album. Many of her songs were Hatch/Trent compositions, and that's why they were so good. They were almost like Goffin/King in quality, or Mann/Weil. .

Few Yanks recognize that PETULA had been singing as a child star many years before she came to the states and went DOWNTOWN during ww2 she had her own radio show and she appeared on TV in the UK at the tender age of 14 in 1946 Sorry PETULA I Didn't mean to reveal your age!

What does the rainbow symbol have to do with the song? It's being shoved down the public's throat... pun intended.

I never particularly cared for female vocalists, but there are a few that I find to be exceptional: Petula Clark might be at the top. Then Karen Carpenter and Dionne Warwick. Petula and Dionne were very blessed to be working with perfect songwriting teams. Hatch/Trent were so perfect for Petula. Their songs stand out on this LP. But Pet's voice was arguably the best on two songs: Just Say Goodbye and At The Crossroads. She puts so much passion in them,
it gives me chills. One more thing that was great about her is that many of the filler tracks on albums could have also been hits. Some were hits for others - like Call Me and You're The One. Extraordinary artist!

Rolf Thoryk: Petula Clark in my ABSOLUTELY favourite female singer of ALL TIME.
She as an exceptional talent who could sing numbers from a phonebook and make it sound brilliant.
Every song that I have ever heard Petula sing as being pinpoint accuract in tune.
Just an out of this world amensly talented and very, very VERY beautiful lady.

"You're the One" is a Petula Clark original, of course. She co-wrote it with Hatch and introduced it on the "I Know a Place" LP and also had chart success outside the U.S. with the song. "Call Me" was originally an album track for Clark, also on the "I Know a Place" LP, and later covered by other artists, most notably by Chris Montez.

@@raybrown3667 Yes Ray other artists did indeed record their versions of Call Me however no one,but no one did it anywhere as good as Petula.
Chris Montez did a very good version and Frank Sinatra sang his rendition at a far too slow tempo.
Petula Clark with her version knocked it clean out of the park.

You named three of my top five, Judy Garland heading the list and Shirley Bassey (perhaps) following. Nina Simone is on a listing all her own.

Love this album! (Got a few typos and missing a few caps pertaining to the heading, including the song titles. It's "Who Am I" , not Who i Am.
