  • John's Cool Blooms & Interesting Plants
    Today John is teaching us all about this VERY interesting fig tree, (syn. 𝘍𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘴 𝘳𝘰𝘹𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘨𝘩𝘪𝘪) Ficus auriculata in the family Moraceae. Most fig species require a wasp to pollinate the fruit to make it palatable; there are only a few figs that don’t require wasp for tasty fruit, including Ficus sycomorus and Ficus carica.

    The fruit won’t ripen in the US because the wasp doesn’t exist here but apparently the unripe fruit of this tree can be eaten cooked

    Could this be hand pollinated if you were able to get pollen from a male fig. How do I get my hands on this type of fig?

    common figs are ficuses as well and they require wasp pollination as well.

    • @jct0302
      @jct0302 3 года назад

      Ficus carica common figs do not require pollination. San Pedro figs require pollination to set a main crop (their breba or early crop doesn't require pollination). Smyrna figs require pollination to set any crop. Outside of California, the ficus carica wasp has not established any colonies. There are thousands of common figs growing in people's backyards throughout the country and they do not have access to the wasp.

      I guess all those figs I'm eating fresh from my fig trees in Texas (they commercially grow them here too) are just fake figs?

    • @husch05
      @husch05 11 месяцев назад

      @@pswanberg1 Some common figs have been specifically bred to be self fertile.
      Edit: They are not self fertile, they set fruit without even being pollinated.
