my guess is that Ray, Mike, Graeme and the soon to be new members of the band took psychedelics about 6 months after this performance and a beam of light filled their heads with lots of new material and an entirely new way of looking at things.
100% agreeing, just fantastic.....especially the "thank you blablabla" ending with "bonsoir.....or something!!!!!" Just perfect elegant nonsense beautifulness!!!!!!
Rod has had a really interesting career - see themoodyblues.co.uk/rod.htm Will post some videos shortly from his 80th birthday gigs in Lowestoft held on 24&25th Nov 22. He actually wrote some of the songs (inc. Red Wine) incorrectly credited to Pinder/Laine on the Magnificent Moodies box set.
Thanks much to the person sharing this video & to the commenters adding the historical facts. I will be watching the video about Rod in the comments after this too.☮️💜
Thank you, Tony. These were great - the original Moodies were a great blues band. Enjoyed seeing Rod Clark as well. He fit in just right with this group. Great energy. Interestingly, the Hayward/Lodge versions of these same early songs look and sound lifeless. But they made all the right songwriting moves to create the great band they eventually became.
"Life's Not Life" is introduced as being from "a new album" which obviously did not materialize. This song was recorded by Laine and Clark (apparently their only one) in the line-up but not released until it appeared on a single in 67 and unfortunately died.
Awesome restoration Tony considering the source material. 1st version I had was all red and audio sounded like 12 generations down. I'll be watching for Rod's 80th bday footage. I have his 70th. That was a real treat with a Moodies connection besides Rod himself. Peter Trout, second drummer for the Electric String Band sits in for "Angela Jones."
Thanks. fortunately I didn't need to alter the audio from my copy. I used Corel Videostudio to convert 352x244 .MPG to 800x600 .MP4, then the amazing Topaz Video AI to upscale to 2560x1440 (I really recommend people check this software out), finally through Pixbim Video Colorize AI (not to everyone's taste I know). Topaz has a remarkable Photo AI tool too, it can re-generate high-quality faces and is mind-boggling!. Thanks for the heads-up - I just watched "Angela Jones" - Rod has not change one bit since then! (as a Meek fan, I used to be in touch with Michael Cox (who had a UK hit with this in 1960)).
Life's Not Life, Boulevard de Madeleine and other songs composed/recorded by the Moodies in 1966 show a clear change in musical direction compared to their early R&B sound. I'm convinced they would have turned into a psychedelic band anyway, with or without Justin and John.
Too right. They're wearing the blue suits that Justin mentions here. A great insight on how they changed direction, - thank goodness. ruclips.net/video/m7LL7Azo_78/видео.html&ab_channel=JustinHayward
Thanks. As I put in the description, the file I had was only 352x288 resolution but managed to rescue it with various software, quite surprised at how good the details came out.
Few would disagree (including myself) that Justin has one of the smoothest voices to come out of mid 20th century. Surely the love child of Johnny Mathis and Johnnie Ray. But to compare to Denny's vocal chops is akin to comparing apples to oranges. Denny is a blues singer with a raw edge. He can also sing effortlessly as a rocker, a folkie, a crooner, etc. In short, JH couldn't do justice to Go Now even if needles were stuck into his hands. Denny, on the other hand, has performed some awesome covers of Night In White Satin.

Amazing - never seen this before.
The original sound before Justin and John joined and Mike found the Mellotron.
c'est surprenant M PINDER sans M>ellotron , qui fera la musique de M. B les grandes années vont arrivées !..

R.I.P. Mike Pinder. He was the king of the meletron.
Stunning rendering of Bye Bye Bird!!
Quite the finale. Denny's high screams are excellent

That vocal arrangement at 3:03 is very "classic Moodies", even though Justin and John hadn't joined yet.
The Magnificent Moodies
Amazing stuff! Proof that Rod Clark really was in the band.! Cool seeing Ray playing that flute, just wondered what he got his dance moves from

Sure glad Justin came on board.

You're welcome. Couldn't agree more!
Surprised that Denny never swallowed that harmonica.
Remember great nights at the Carlton Club Erdington Brum
Wow, wish I could have been there. Would love to hear more about that if you could drop me an email? Thanks, Tony
Mike the powerhouse!!!😊
Magnifique document vidéo. Jamais vu, MERCI!!!!!
Wow! A nice bit of Moody history. Thanks Tony.
This is, indeed, very rare footage! Clint Warwick had already left and been replaced by Rod Clark and Denny Laine left just a few weeks after this.
Thanks for posting !

Fantastic. So much energy.
Tony another gem !!Thank you !1 Keep em coming please .
Wow. Within ~6 years Mike will have recorded Lost in a Lost World.
Wow! Amazing! Thank you. What a treat and treasure!
Thank you for sharing!
If the date is correct, the band had yet to record the first two songs. They were recorded in September.
Cool! 😃

This performance must have been right before Denny Laine's departure.
Laine left the Moody Blues in October 1966 so this footage was shot only a few weeks before that
Great to see Denny here ❤
Wonderful! Though some of that performance really hurt my ears!

so damn awesome
Poor Justin had to do this stuff when he joined two months after this. What he must have thought at the time......
Justin turned the Moodies' into pretentious shit for music "elitists"

Good sweaty fun but frontmen Justin and John were obviously needed.
I'm sorry, but they needed Justin and John.
Definitely!
Well, truth be told, Justin couldn't sing blues even if needles were stuck in his hands. JH is at his best when he sings his own stuff.
Love the moody blues but what was that symbol Deni threw in the second song?
Thank goodness the Blue Jays came along…
This is amazing, where did you find this? and with this great quality

Bye bye birdie needs some tron
That’s not The Moody Blues I listen to!
Much prefer the Moodies Mk2
Before Justin and John arrived they were average at best.
The voice of Denny Laine is far away from the beautiful one of Justin Hayward ! He sings wrong ☹️

@@artrandy Indeed he has! And the description wasn't meant to be taken seriously. His voice is a beautiful blend of Mathis and Ray.
Rather trite and embarrassing! Thabk God that Justin, John, and LSD came along to give us all visionary and white magical sounds.
