RIP Sr. Cande. You Sir epitomize, and are a standard bearer, of what a man is supposed to be! I was in Zona Colonia in February with my flaquita Josefina. We were eating a light lunch an saw a older couple enjoying each other. I told her that this is what i desired for us siempre. But after seeing this documentary, Juana and Cande stole the show! I'm gonna forward this to my flaquita to look at. Bless you Story Doc.

Wow, what a story and excellent depiction, of life most Caribbean ppl have and are experiencing no matter the language, culture and race.
What a beautiful life despite despite not having much materially and financially. Their richness is their family, friends and the land. Many dream to go abroad to foreign countries however the glitz and glamour comes with a hefty price of loosing self, dignity and I dare say humanity. Juana recognizes what matters most and is contented with her few but many blessings. God bless her and her entire family and thank them for sharing 🙏🏽💖☮️🌍

I watched the documentary . I'm from Puerto plata . My family used to own almost all the land where la loma isabel de Torres (cable car ) is located . Santana , martinez , mercado, and medrano. I remember I grew up in a country where electricity was not available, not running water and we have to walk to get to the city for almost 2 hours . That's my childhood memories . My grandma used to take me to pick up the coffee around 5am in the morning so we can hike to the top of the hill . It was very cool and too far . Imagine in my time I was behind Mr candé. He had electricity and we didn't. The main row was right there and we didn't had music .
Beautiful family and a real representation of my people .

To find that much happiness in extreme poverty tell us that may have been searching for the wrong thing. It is not what we own that make us happy, although many of us think it is. It is the love of family and whatever we do for our descendants that will us all very happy.

I needed to see this. I've been here for 3 weeks and am looking for a permanent place to settle. I didn't realize I was looking through tourist eyes, which I can't avoid really, but this is the real DR. These are the real Dominicans. Much respect.
Sr. Bartolo has taken my friend and I under his wing, watchful eye - at our guesthouse. He gave me a rosary before we went down the coastline. This makes me understand that gesture, and him, so much more.
    I'm just humbled.

I don't know how anyone could be enslaved and allow themselves to be called dominican by a european explorer, criminal, genocider and not try to reconcile themselves with their original roots! How could anyone respect them when they are opeerating on the wrong narrative and do not show any disdain for that? If you do not explain, the history, the social, political evolution of that country then this story does not nearly tell their story!
