- Here is my arrangement and solo ukulele cover of "Easy On Me" by Adele! Ever since this song took the world by storm last year I wanted to take a stab at creating a solo ukulele arrangement that combines the plucked melody and strummed chords. My favorite part of this song is the bridge section which rips into full out strums, placing the high melody notes on the bottom A-string of the ukulele. By arranging this song in the key of C, I was able to leverage the open strings to create a full, dynamic sound with the instrument. I hope you enjoy!

This is a melodious and uplifting performance of Adele's song (which this "oldie" IS familiar with!) It sounds so effortless, yet in your e-letter you reveal with admirable honesty the many painful steps in the long and arduous process of creating this lovely arrangement. How frustrating to nearly reach the end of the journey, only to realize that more work needed to be done! I am sharing your words here for those who have not seen them:
"Earlier this week I recorded several performances of the song over the course of an afternoon, but it just wasn't working... even though I had already spent more than 40 hours working on and practicing the arrangement :(
"The choruses didn't "lift" how I wanted them to in my first attempt - there was no energy. So I ended up rearranging the choruses to lift that energy. Then I had to practice the new changes in time to re-record them the next day!
"I share all this for one reason...
"I hear from a lot of players who think playing solo on ukulele is something you either can do effortlessly or not at all... but that's just not the reality. Arranging and performing a song like this one takes a lot of work. It takes time to figure out what works best for the arrangement, especially on a four-string instrument like the ukulele! And then, once you have that, you have to practice to work on communicating the performance of the song... and sometimes your first performance doesn't go well!
"So if you are on your own journey to play the ukulele solo, just remember it takes time... be patient and stay persistent in your practicing."
As a songwriter I know the pain of that moment when you run into a dead end, and have to back up and take another run at it. And as a ukulele player who - after many years of plunking away at chords - still has trouble singing and playing at the same time, I am heartened by your words of wisdom. Time, patience, and persistence! Solo uke is a distant dream.
By the way, I love your teaching methods. Keep spreading joy, one uke at a time.
