    My mother in law died last month. Her father was a major in WWII and was in charge of a bomb disposal unit in the centre of London. He defused a Luftwaffe bomb that fell unexploded into George VI bedroom in Buckingham Palace ( the King was elsewhere ). The Major died in 1959 but last week his initialled Rolson cigarette lighter was handed to me as we went through his daughter’s effects. It was totally seized up and hadn’t been used for 65 years. Now it works thanks to this video. Thank you.

    I just finished putting in a new flint and fluid into my Mother-in-laws Ronson 'Banker' lighter, but no spark and no flame. Thought I would search for info in here and found your videos. Took it all apart, cleaned out obstruction in flint tube, and reassembled....now have spark and flame. Thanks to you, I look like a hero! Very informative. Keep enjoying what you are doing!

      @DependableFlame dude you got me into fixing these old lighters. I have Two standard.. standards and a tortoise enamel and am trying to get a perfect condition blue as well as a princess and essex at some points. I have three typhoons because they are hands down the best lighter in existence, and the little pet champ mini looking standard (forget the name it's the size of a mini bic though) It cost me 7 bucks busted completely and since i got it working ive been offered 85 to 125 but i aint selling that its my most valuable lighter, thanks to you! (Not counting my lucky strike zippos because people seem to want and be willing to trade kidneys for them now) point is i love your work here on youtube. im here to get my standards all working properly because the only problem I'm left with is either no or inconsistent spark, all brought back from being seized up busted and missing parts. The striking wheel turns. Just not enough.

    I have the black marble Ronson table lighter. The lighter won't spark and I am wondering how you can tell if the lighter has a piece of flint in it. When you take out the spring on the bottom (the one from your video at minute 1:24) should a piece of flint fall out? I know the lighter is also missing fluid but it could also be missing flint. What kind of lighter fluid should I use for this lighter? Thanks.

    Wow what a beautiful lighter, wish I had it! Love that style Ronson. Second favorite old Evans: Do you have a store do you sell any lighters? Thank you for the Post, sending it to a friend who doesn't know how to fix'em. I thought I was gonna have to make the video but you did it for me!!! Most every time it's a fused in flint that just needs to be cleaned out. You're doing it exactly how I do it, with with an identical drill bit. After decades I finally figured out the screws on the bottom were designed for a penny to be used. Many people have scarred up the screws thinking they're supposed to be a flathead screwdriver, they don't make flatheads that wide.

    • @DependableFlame
      @DependableFlame  3 года назад

      I never heard the penny thing before. Thank you.
      I do have an Ebay store, the links on this page of my site will take you there: dependableflame.com/current-ebay-listings
      Don't be afraid to make an offer. Everything is priced a little high and if I really like it, maybe a little higher.😜

    Just wanted to throw this message to anyone putting one back together, if it seems like you got the wheel back together right but it strikes once every few times check how you put the gears meshing. I couldn’t for the life of me get it to strike without holding the cover with my thumb and putting pressure on the button then releasing the cover so it struck faster. What ended up happening is I put the gears flush so that they were one to one with the button, needed to put it one higher so that it got the full stroke and now it sparks first time every press

    • @DependableFlame

    • @mathewhex7045

    I loved this video. I replicated every step on my Ronson Whirlwind, as the old flint had been compacted. Managed to get the old one out and free up the flint tube. All good.
    However….it still wont spark. I suspect that the striking wheel isn’t spinning. Could this be the case? There is a tiny flat spring steel ‘washer’ that grips the teeth in the side of the striking wheel. This seems to have worked a small crack into the housing end of the snuffer and I think this may be the problem. The gear doesn’t turn the striking wheel when the plunger is depressed. Make sense? What am I doing wrong?
    Thank you for your excellent videos, by the way. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

    • @DependableFlame

    I did exactly all this, but still not spark. Without the flint un it appears to work fine. With the flint, the sparking wheel will not spin. There appears to be a tiny piece of copper colored metal up in that cap that may be broken--does that need to be putting some pressure on something? Thanks!

    • @DependableFlame
      @DependableFlame  Год назад

      There are at least two different styles of clutch spring: one that rides on top of the snuffer, the other sheet metal type rides alongside the teeth which the clutch spring engages. Without something engaging the teeth, the file wheel will not turn. I think this video will help:

    What do you do if the tiny slotted screw pieces that hold the top mechanism in place are "stuck" together? I've tried lubricant, two small screw drivers, both working counterclockwise to try to unscrew these stubborn little things. No progress so far. I haven't completely "stripped" the little slot heads, but they show some wear on the edges now from the little screwdrivers slipping.

    I seem to be having a bit of a unique problem.
    I have two ronsons, and the striker wheels work perfectly.
    The flint tubes are clear, but everytime I go to replace the flints it gives me one to two good sparks and then nothing.
    I've bought multiple kinds, but the only flint that will work in either of them is the original worn down one that one of them came with.
    What's going here?
    Is it the flints themselves?
    The strikers work fine, but only that specific old flint will throw consistent sparks.

      It is very difficult to accomplish anytime you need to use two screwdrivers at the same time. I've done it on camera several times, including using a vice to hold one of the drivers. Sometimes though the threads have corroded together and it is an impossible task! You can always try solvents.✌️

      Give the wheel a good clean with a wire brush,be sure to slightly stretch spring so it applies some pressure on flint. Make sure clutch spring in correctly fitted so the wheel only turns one way and align gears on push mechanism so it extends to 90 deg straight up.

    Hi there, thanks for these vdeos, they are very helpful and easy to follow! I recently picked up an old Ronson Standard on eBay. Apparently someone has tried to maintain it with a heavy hammer! Thanks to your videos, I've rebuilt it and it all works ....except.... there is no strike nor spark. When I depress the mechanism, it all moves smoothly but the striking wheel does not turn. It turns if I remove the flint, but not when there is pressure on it. I've tried rebuilding it differently, (the little spring is a bit confusing ), but with no luck. I'm not sure if I'm missing a part or if I'm missing something else. Any ideas what I can try? It's the mechanism without the built in gears. It's made in England, Ronson Standard Brit Pat 621570. Thanks!

    Looks like i need to disassemble my striking wheel and get it cleaned up, get some spring grease in the plunger and probably put the teeth up one notch to give it more spin. Thats what the pet champ needed.
    When clearing flints i found its better to work it by hand and not use a drill. It takes a bit longer but not much and you wont end up needing to spend three days painstakingly making a new flint sleeve by hand like i did.
    I dont think we should actually be using power tools to fix these things, hasnt been necessary since i nust started pushing and turning the drill bit by hand.
    The real trick is not making the girlfriend angry swearing and cussing at the lighter when trying to screw the whole assembly back into place on top. You make it look so easy lol

    • @DependableFlame

      I'm confused what you mean by star wheels. Are you talking about the gears that fit into the sides of the snuffer? And by lining them up are you talking about alignment with the thumb lever or in the snuffer itself?
      I speak of "timing the mechanism" in these Ronson reassembly videos. What I mean by that is lining up the thumb lever with the gears so the snuffer lifts properly(not too high or too low.) It's just trial and error until you fit it right.
