Anyone that is having the issue where as soon as you add a diffuse map it all goes black - it's probably as simple as updating your video drivers. It worked for me and others. First time I've ever commented on a youtube video but thought I'd leave that tip, and to say hats off to Video Copilot and Andrew Kramer. Been following for years and awesome content, great plugins and tutorials - especially the humour and presentation. Thanks!
Dude, you and your team (isn't it basically just you though?) have been ridiculously amazing over the years. For the little you charge, you put out way beyond anything that anyone could ask for. You've been a wealth of knowledge (when you don't have to be) and you help everyone over the years and, again with this, just wow. I would gladly pay for this plug-in, yet, you just give it away!? Just wanted to say that I appreciate what you do and I'll keep supporting Video Copilot.
And bravo for his extraordinary skill as a teacher! Most of RUclips Adobe CC tutorials are totally not understandable by guys who are here more to show off than really help you develop your knowledge whatever nationals they may be; including my dear French compatriots!

Why mercury and venus show up in the night sky? If sun is not visible in the night sky, then how venus is visible? That's impossible. Can any scientist (Illuminati) explain this? No. All 12 months, we see the same stars in the night sky, but we should see some other stars which are in the other side for 6 months. Globe is busted again.

The transcript with a little editing, thanking Andrew. part 2 So you might have heard of something like a specular map so if we open that up we can see the world here and you can see that the oceans are mostly gray and lighter and the land is a bit darker and essentially what we're saying is we want the surface that's made of water to be more smooth and glassy and we want the land parts to be more diffused or less glassy. Now, one really nice feature is that we have a gamma and brightness control for the map so if we change this you can actually see we're getting a slightly different result and this can be nice just to get those final tweaks now a couple other things to point out is that in the bump settings we have a setting called bump fall-off and if you turn that up it actually cuts the amount of bump that's allowed to go past this sort of Terminator line, basically, where the lighting edge ends and this is a really useful setting for just being able to control how far your bump mapping goes. All right, so next let's turn on our lights now we have an illumination map loaded and we can open up that map basically it's just a bunch of lights that are on for the various cities in the world now if we go to the orb plugin all we have to do is load a map and then turn up the illumination settings so as we turn that up we're gonna see those lights turn on. Now notice that the lights turn on in the illuminated area so if I just rotate our orb where the light is say splitting up an area with a lot of lights what we can do is go into the illumination options and there's a setting for shadow light and we'll turn it up and you'll see that the light only shows up in the illuminated areas now if we turn it the other direction and then turn up the light contrast we can actually start to cut it off in the illuminated area so as we rotate this we can actually see it cutting out. Now, later we might play around with the expansion which allows us to just shift where that edge is, we can also change the illumination map color so we can tint it you know just with a little bit more saturation if we wanted to change the color of the lights and you know we could do something really crazy but just a little bit more warmth I think that's kind of cool. All right, so let's go and move on to creating the atmosphere cloud layer so to do that we're gonna create a new solid we'll call this clouds and hit OK and we'll take the VC orb effect drop it on the layer now for this copy we're going to be using the Earth cloud texture, now that looks something like this now in order to get this to work with orbs so we can see through the clouds we need to create an Alpha Channel so what we'll do is take that cloud layer and choose layer pre-compose we're gonna leave all the attributes we're called Earth clouds alpha and hit OK, and so now if we double click it so what we're gonna do is add an effect called extract drop that on there now I do think I should encourage you to get FX console, another free plugin from Video Copilot, it allows you to search for effects without having to go over to the effects and presets here, but for now let's go ahead and use the extract so we'll grab this slide it over and then take the bottom point and drag that back over so now if we look at the Alpha Channel you can actually see that when we turn this on and off we're actually cropping out the color based on the luminance so that looks pretty good let's add a tint effect so we'll just type tint drop that on there we're gonna change the black color to a little bit of blue. Alright, so it looks pretty much the same except now we have a bit of an Alpha Channel, so we can close this and go back to our Earth orbit comp and we'll select the cloud layer with our orb effect we'll go down to the maps and we're going to load into the diffuse slot the Earth clouds alpha that we just created and into the bump slot the very same map Earth clouds 6K Alpha. Alright, so now we want to make the clouds look a little bit more puffy and a little less plastic, so what we can do is turn up the illumination and that'll give it a bit of a self illumination and get rid of some of that plasticness. Now if we solo the layer you'll also see that it's really shiny so let's turn the glossiness down to really low like maybe 0.1. I think that looks pretty good, now the other problem is we don't want to see the clouds in the shaded area so we can use our same illumination trick so we'll slide this over to the light side and then maybe now we can turn up the illumination just to bring some more brightness up, all right, so the edges look a little bit rough, so here's a couple of things we're going to do so we'll turn up the illumination just a bit now if we go back down here to the bump fall-off for the map we can actually turn this up and it will reduce the area where the clouds overlap so maybe we'll just turn this down to about 0.93 or so and it'll go up here to the illumination options and we're gonna turn the bump influence down and what that will do is soften the clouds a bit and then we can even expand the clouds just a little bit and maybe we'll turn the shadow contrast down just a touch and maybe I'll just turn up the illumination just a little bit Alright, so now let's go ahead and add a curves adjustment and here I just want to go to the Alpha Channel and just put a little bit of contrast and just make some of these clouds pop out a little bit more same with the RGB we'll just brighten it just a bit and one last thing let's change the color from white to a bit of an off-white color all right so if you miss a step or you need to go back in time a little bit just roll it back a few seconds. Alright, so next what I want to do is add a shadow underneath our atmosphere so in order to do that I want to take our cloud layer and I want to duplicate it now the idea here is that we want the atmosphere to be above the surface of the Earth so if we increase the radius to about 202 that basically creates a larger sphere now if we take the cloud layer that's below and maybe unload the bump map since we don't really need that anymore and what we'll do is add an effect called color correction tint and we'll just change this to black and so now we have a bit of a shadow, now I'm also gonna add a fast blur turn on repeat edge pixels and maybe just 1.5 just want a little bit of softness we can let me go to the Alpha channel here and tweak how dark some of the shaded areas are basically, but you can see that really goes a long way to giving this Earth more dimension now here's a really cool feature that we've added that you're gonna find a ton of uses for, so if we take our cloud layer so I'll rename this middle one hit enter new cloud shadow and we'll take the top copy and we'll go into the material settings for the advanced and there's an option called edge feather and edge shrink so if we look closely the orb is going past our Earth and that's because we made the radius larger so what we're actually gonna do is turn up the edge feather amount and turn up the shrink amount and it will actually contract or erode the edge of the sphere so that you can actually get it to align with your main planet this is looking good.
"20 years ago I made this awful Earth tutorial. 10 years ago I made this Earth tutorial with VC Orb. Today I'm going to show you how to make an actual Earth."

I just can't get over how f'reakin cool this plugin is!! I literally purchased after effects and am learning it because of that trailer... Just WOW!!! It's just so perfect for what I'm needing it for. So thank you soo very much!! You could have made some serious bucks on it but instead you wanted to give it to us for free, I'm just blown away with that move too.
Thanks for this great tutorial and plugin again! You've changed many people career in years. And soon we all be drowned the planet videos after people watch this one :)
Great tutorial. I started off taking notes while I watched the tutorial. Then decided to watch it completely and forgo taking notes. I'll re-watch and take notes then dive into trying to create my own. This is just amazing and I've been wanting to try this, but until now, I did not have the capacity on my computer to do it. Keeping my fingers crossed that this workstation will do the trick! Thank you for taking the time to do this tutorial. I appreciate the work that had to go into doing this. Looking forward to watching & learning more!
As long as I wanted to make such great Earth, after loading the diffuse picture in the orb plugin, the sphere disappeared, and the rest of the work could not be continued, obviously, due to unknown reasons.
I'm in love... feeling like a kid on christmas. This appeared to me in the right time when I needed it the most and will use it for many of my next projects. Thank you
Dude, I'm learning so much from your tutorials. I'm really just starting out but your tutorials have really helped me get comfortable with After Effects and Premier. I can't thank you enough. Plus, one of my very first videos used your Saber plug-in to fulfill a childhood dream of having a light saber, "sort of" :). If I get to the point where I'm making any money at this, I'll stop just using your free plug-ins and tutorials and start paying you for stuff. I promise! I can't wait to scrape some cash together to get element 3D.
So I'm using this plugin on AE CC2019, not sure if that's my problem, but when I add Planet 4k to the diffuse map (3:49 on the video) my orb disappears, it blacks out, I've tried other pictures as well only to end up with the same problem. Do you have any advice or ideas on why this is happening? When I change my diffuse blend from 1.00 to any number lower my orb begins to reappear but it is simply a white orb, no texture, it reacts almost as if I'm using opacity. Any help would be much appreciated!
thank you so much! you are one of the very few that make good tutorials. you dont miss out on any klicks, one can follow you a 100% and you are not too fast nor to slow. and you explain it very well. thank you!
I hope these pointers from the last 5 hours spent semi successfully creating an Earth that I think passes for a possible commercial use can help others. Firstly, I know this is basic, but, put the tutorial on a separate screen/laptop so that you can keep pausing and rewinding (otherwise it will do your head in). Secondly, don't rush the tutorial. Go step by step because it really is worth following every micro step. If you miss a stage, it's hard to pick up the thread of where you were and why you lost the 'look'. For example I had to have two goes at getting the stars right because I rushed it the first time round. Do follow the stars step. It really is the icing on the cake as the Earth really does look like it is part or a real life Universe. Don't just put the stars up behind. For me the single most important step is the point light. The point light affects so many different elements, it makes a difference with the shadow between the light and dark areas of the Earth and the glow you add later on in the process. Get that point light right, and other things fall into place. My advice is to take the point light target area away from the Earth so that the light cuts across. My Earth is posting as I type and you are welcome to see what is possible from a person who dabbles in AE but is by no means an expert. Now the bad news. When you apply the clouds and clouds 2 layers, (on my set up at least) they don't line up with the original Orb. I have no idea why. All are sat at the 960, 540 and it is a fiddle to line them up as depending on where the camera is, they need tweaking. If you decide to rotate the Orb layer during a render, it rotates at a different rate (faster) than the clouds above. I don't know why but it does, and you can't parent them, but after a lot of trial and error, it is just quicker to move the camera. You don't need to turn on the 3d layer icon on each solid. This software intuitively does this. That's it from me. I can't get over how absolutely amazing this software is. I can now show any country in the World in a project and get a realistic 3d result. I will be buying from Video Copilot, and I think they deserve amazing praise for this.
04:03 How are you rotating the orb like that? When I try to do it, the orb moves as if it is rotating around a different axis, which is far from the centre.
@@vanity9038 hey, i just figured it out. when we create a new camera we should make it as Two-node camera (type). Just in cause if you wanna be back to that tutorial :)
The easiest way I found to rotate the orb without accidentally moving the light or camera is to go to VC Orb and the 5th control is Rotation Y. Using your mouse over the second number (after the 0x) hold the left button and move the mouse left or right.
Whenever I try to rotate the camera (like at 10:14) the planet and light source moves to the side, pls help P.S. found that you just need to choose a two-noded camera
5:27 why can't i covered the whole globe with the illumination thing, its just covered the dark area and the area where the light bounces of the globe but not the whole? pls
Andrew is a living god when it comes to special fx. My first time I followed his tut was in 2011 I think...I was already impressed when he started his tut with "hey whassup Andrew Kramer here and welcome to another very exciting tutorial.... :D
There is no way to correct that ? :/ I might be late here but I've began AE for a few month and i'm rolling throught many plug ins and i found this one really interesting and want to use it properly and entirely :/
I have a little problem with the "Glow Effect (25:33) ", i don't have this blue halo i don't understand , mine is not important enough ( Sorry, my english is so bad... but i need help guys )
It is so simple just click layer light and press A and shift P and turn on timer and change the position of light at first frame and at last frame thats it where ever the light goes shadow escapes this is the easiest light animation method.
It keeps saying “invalid filter” and “can’t find main entry point” every time I try to add the effect. what did I do wrong cause I downloaded it and did what it said to install it. And I’m using After Effects CC 2019
At 16:45 Andrew decreased the Bump Influence on the clouds layer. That made the clouds look soft and puffy. But when I tried it it doesn't do anything at all.
For anyone who is having the problem that the orb-plugin is puttin up the error "Send dump-file to VC-support", press enter every time the message appears, click the orb-plugin in the Effect Control-tab and close the first arrow of the plugin, right under the name "VC Orb" and above "3D Object". This arrow is an empty entry which causes the problem. After it´s closed/minimized everything should work :)
I had the same problem. Not sure why Andrew's acted differently than mine, but I was able to fix it by bringing down the Shadow/Light Contrast. Hope this helps!
It's the size camera you're using. Select 35mm from the drop down. It screws things up otherwise and the textures don't map right either. I had the same problem.
Following this tutorial to the letter, pausing every single time he changes any value, even looking for random cuts where he changes values without telling you, it still won't look even close to the same as in the video
I think he skips a few tweaks he does. My "terminator line" doesnt look anywhere near his and neither does my haze. Also he doesnt mention he made a null at the end with the light pickwhipped to it.
For me it works perfectly, absolutely amazing, however the textures i downloaded claim to be 4k, i even tried 10k, but they show up super blurry and almost looks like 720p, is there some setting in AE that i am missing? My preview is on full quality, or, is someone able to link some actual 4k planet textures?
@@Tommutgeert You need to zoom inside of the Comp. With scrolling only you get the Viewer window bigger and smaller. Thats when it gets blurry. There is a hotkey to travel with that camera inside the Comp but i forgot. Hope that helps a bit

I don't think I have ever found a line of tutorials better than how this guy spells these out for free plug-ins. Video Copilot has my business!
never clicked so fast in my life lol

11:27 - man.. these kinds of jokes are amazing and I am glad you have this sort of sense of humor :)
Mi dear friend Andrew, this is the first time that I write you. You have been my teacher since a long time, is an honor learn with you. Keep doing tutorials
you are the Bob Ross of the digital world, been a fan of your tutorials since 2009, keep up the awesome work !!
Man.....Can't find the words for you.....
Thanks for all you do for the beginner....
Really expiring....
Right now I am student and don't have money...But when I will be a professional gonna buy all your stuffstuffs
Ones again thankyou
The plugin is amazing and I finally understand why is free, you need a 4K euro PC to run with the texture in 4K ... ;)
2:58 would it do the same sound effect when I drop it in my after effects? 😂
It better do!
XDDDD
Andrew got a nice sense of humour, thats what make his tutorials more interesting to watch!...
14:08 finally!!!! the use of that CLOUD map.
Thanks for this great tutorial and plugin again! You've changed many people career in years. And soon we all be drowned the planet videos after people watch this one :)
Waiting so long for this tutorial😍.And at last it is here😍✌️✌️
Thankyou so much. Don't know how to thank you....😁. The tutorial and the plugin are too great for just a thanks.
@Juan Pablo Ibañez waiting a week for the tutorial of Andrew Kramer is like waiting for a decade 😂 and i think you know that .😉
Great tutorial.
This is my first time learning special effects on RUclips. It's so cool, thank you!
As long as I wanted to make such great Earth, after loading the diffuse picture in the orb plugin, the sphere disappeared, and the rest of the work could not be continued, obviously, due to unknown reasons.
Does anyone know if there's a way to export the finished earth result, into 3ds Max? Or convert it into an .obj format?
Why are you working backwards? Bring whatever you are making in 3ds max into AE.
@litLizard Yeah. Did you remember that video from that long ago or did you recently watch it? I feel like it was so long ago haha.
@@FinalGrade exactly 🤣🤣🤣

YES ANDREW! YOU ARE AMAZING!!!
Oh my gosh you are the best person ever. This things look so good and there free!!!
Hot damn! With the hemisphere option, I'm-a give my actors some snazzy digital knitted caps!
lmao
Still the best results ever made with this plugin is this tut right here. You guys get the most ouf of them.
Wow! That's incredible and all for free and a tutorial! Has Christmas came early I would've paid for that, so good as always Kramer. The master!
I'm facing same issue. Did you find any solution?
I'm having the same problem!
same problem here. Any fixes or did you guys just give up?
same
5:28 cant make illumination color glow over whole surface, on my side it cover only dakr part of the planet. What I did wrong?
Same here! Any pointers?
I figured out. Bringing the shadow/light contrast to 0 fixed it for me.

thank you so much! you are one of the very few that make good tutorials. you dont miss out on any klicks, one can follow you a 100% and you are not too fast nor to slow. and you explain it very well.
When I try to do it, the orb moves as if it is rotating around a different axis, which is far from the centre.
same here. did you find the answer?
@@juliashah726 No, sorry. I ended up doing something else as I kept having issues with this tutorial.
AMD's latest driver won't let you see the planet when you apply a diffuse texture.
Thank you. Do you know how to solve it?
Just a tip for people doing this effect: Make sure your Depth is set to 32-bits per channel
Why, just curious
Andrew you're top of the nudge pls keep posting I've learned alot from you..
I just terraformed Mars and gave it oceans..

P.S. found that you just need to choose a two-noded camera
You need to animate light seperately

2. (25:44) You are making the Atmosphere, but when I am putting the Glow on the Haze nothing happend.
Can someone help me??

just one think to say THIS IS THE BEST THINK I HAVE EVER SEEN OMG?? And the trailer !!!!!! thank u soooo much !
unfortunately bugged in ae 2022, the illu map shows as a purple solid color :(
yep same, completely bugged, norm map showing and haze ignores shadow/light settings, just decreases opacity and not cutting it in shadows only.
I had this problem too, I spent a while adjusting the settings on the second glow to get it to work as his settings didn't quite do it for me.
We found a fix with MARCO! You need to change your compsetting to 32BIT not 8bit VOLA! Thank me later! :D
THANKYOU!!!!!
@@antonpolinski Thank you!
@@antonpolinski Where do you change it?
Can someone tell me how he does the rotation at the end with the shadow moving too? What did he do with the Null Object?
It is so simple just click layer light and press A and shift P and turn on timer and change the position of light at first frame and at last frame thats it where ever the light goes shadow escapes this is the easiest light animation method.

5 flat earthers felt insulted. :D
@Fridolin Fickwicht from now on, they can fake it, but till this plugin all is not fake.
Andrew how do we make a cable or wire. Cant find anywhere
did you figure it how? I have to make them in blender.
Maybe use cloth sim? Ian Hubert made tutorial (it was flag one I think)
After it´s closed/minimized everything should work :)
when I add the final glow to the haze layer, the glow sits in the inner part of the horizon instead of the outer side. WHats going on? Help!
@@lewis2874 nope. I made the whole thing in cinema 4d
I have this same problem! Did you ever figure it out? @Diego Prods
I had the same problem. Not sure why Andrew's acted differently than mine, but I was able to fix it by bringing down the Shadow/Light Contrast. Hope this helps!
I have done it exactly what he was saying, if I load the texture to the "ball", it just disappers
update u card graphics
It's the size camera you're using. Select 35mm from the drop down. It screws things up otherwise and the textures don't map right either. I had the same problem.
Try running AE using your integrated graphics card instead of your GPU. It worked for me.
One of the best videos I've ever seen in my life. Thank you for sharing this. God bless you man. 🙏
that shadow light option made illumination based on shadow areas is amazing.
Now my question is, how to do you CREATE textures maps for this?

The end of this tutorial is not completely clear. I see the null object on the top of the layers and how is the animation of the light made?
Parent the camera to the 3D null and use it to move/rotate the camera. Same can be done with the light.
For me it works perfectly, absolutely amazing, however the textures i downloaded claim to be 4k, i even tried 10k, but they show up super blurry and almost looks like 720p, is there some setting in AE that i am missing?
