What is the Best Sweet Bourbon? OF 1910 vs Woodford Double Oaked vs the challengers

- Some of us love a sweet bourbon from time to time! These are characterized by lots of caramel, vanilla, charred sugars, and a good balance of secondary flavors. Tonight we put Old Forester 1910 and Woodford Reserve Double Oaked up against Wilderness Trail BiB Bourbon, Michter's US-1 Sour Mash, and Jefferson's Reserve Twin Oak Custom Barrel. Which sweet bourbon will come out on top?

Double Oaked tastes like butter waffles and syrup to me. Really good
Revisiting this video, since I have had the Wilderness Trail and Michters since last comment.
I still rank 1910 on top, probably with Double Oak in 2nd, for when I want a dessert whiskey.
I was surprised at how sweet and easy-drinking the Michters was. It's very sweet and tasty, but not very complex, so it takes a slight hit there. The Wilderness Trail was surprisingly good, but the wheated is better than the regular BiB, IMHO, and the 6-year WT is fantastic.
Love the show so I’m watching some older episodes. After watching this, I got a bottle of woodford double oak and makers 46. I didn’t like either neck pours. The woodford smelled great but tasted like rubbing alcohol with a touch of sweetness. The makers 46 smelled like caramel vanilla but the taste was like rocket fuel with a hint of vanilla finish. After a month, they are changing a bit. Neither is my favorite on its own, but mixed together they taste like sweet brown sugar which is awesome.
I got a bottle of 1910 back in august. First half of the bottle was sweet and char which I absolutely loved. It was my favorite bourbon to date. Then something changed in the bottle. Second half of the bottle was straight bitter wood tannin almost like the smell of bug poison. I got that from the prohibition style 1920 also. Must be something in the old forester that my pallet doesn’t like.
I had 1920 at a restaurant and got strong bubble gum notes from it. I bought a bottle and haven't gotten that yet. I don't know if it was an old bottle at the restaurant or what. I'm curious if it will change and get that flavor. It was different but in a good way, it was really good. The bottle I have is good, but not the same as I remember that first dram in the restaurant.
Thanks for the comparison. really like OF 86 proof, the 100 proof, the BIB and 1920 expressions. Have been afraid to try the 1910 due to the sweetness. So, thanks to your comments about 1910 being being sweet yet more complex. I'm going to have to give it a try.
I love sweet bourbons & Irish whiskeys. Based on your initial expressions I’m going to bet a bottle of the Woodford Double Oak. The 1910 isn’t available here in Ontario.
My favourite Irish whiskey is Roe & Co, It immediately brought me back to my youth when I used to live on Voortman’s vanilla wafers.
I gotta tell ya. Your reviews/blinds are so much fun. Please keep em coming. Gotta pour me some sweet whiskey right now. Starting with 1910.
This is the proper way to do a rankings video!! Thank you for getting it right!
I love how you can see him getting slightly buzzed doing this test. Haha. Great video my friend. I’ll drink to that Old Forester. Now I gotta get a 1910. I have 1920 and you say you like it better. Wow!!! I also have bottles in bond but it’s too expensive for it’s taste.
4 Roses very delicious. Without tasting the others he has it is very sweet. Not so sweet that it would make you sick but sweet enough to where you might be tempted to drink more of the bottle than you should in one setting.
The 1910 blew my mind the first time I had it. I'm fairly new, and I've just gotten past the "it tastes like hot brown liquor" phase, and starting to pick up some tasting notes and subtle differences. But the 1910 is the first one that made me sit back and say "holy crap that's different", and in a good way. Great stuff, as are the 1920 and the WRDO. The Jefferson's twin barrel was decent, but not attention-grabbing like the others were for me.
How long did it take you to get past that hot brown liquor point?
@@waylonbeasley1477 maybe 6 months or so..? Keep at it if you're new. Eventually they taste sweet and delicious.
@@tjwright great thanks for the response I know you commented a while back so I appreciate it.
Nice blind! I also would have picked the OF 1910, it's my favorite "Double-Oaked" sweet bourbon. The Michter's, to me, has more grassy notes that compliment the sweetness. My ranking would have been #1 1910, #2 Woodford Double Oaked. The Michter's is good, but not quite on par with the other two. Excellent video!
Great review. I have the Woodford and the OF so it was fun watching you review them. Thanks!
Another great video David! Basil Haden always seemed very sweet to me but also very light and thin. Keep up the great reviews! Cheers
Nice vid, stright to the video and keeping it together with no uninteresting bs yet maintain a vibe going
I subbed
btw, which first Bourbon Bottle should i get ? One of these sweets (Never had a sweet Bourbon).
I opted for a regular Woodford, and now i see that you have sweet options....thanks for any tip
Excellent information. Thanks
Nice assortment of taste, my go to is the Wilderness Trail BIB even though I haven’t had the old Forrester 1910 as of yet.
I just tracked down the 1910, picked up three bottles. Been looking for it, for a few years. It's very good.
Great blind battle. I will have to check out that OF1910! Thank you sir. Cheers!
My favorite right now
That 1910 and the Statesman are the only ones I am missing (minus the birthday bottles...out here in Alaska, fat chance in getting it). I'd have to say I haven't drank an OF that I DIDN'T like.
Michter's offerings keep popping up in the YT video world...I'm going to have to start exploring that, the WRDO and the WTrail.
1910 1920 and WFDO my favorites
1910 and DO Woodford are my go-to. 😁
Wheated bourbons tend to be very sweet since most omit rye in their mash bill. You can't go wrong with Old Forester 1910 or Old Forester Single Barrel store picks. Thanks for another great video...cheers!
That's true, but I try to stay away from the wheated ones since I just did a wheated bourbon video not long ago
Great video! I agree with OF 1910 and Michter’s. However WR DO I didn’t find that sweet. I need to go back and revisit. Early Times BIB is a good sweet bourbon if you haven’t tried it.
I love Early Times bib... such a good option for the price! I never considered it sweet, but will have to retry it tonight
Excellent review. I've been waiting for a sweet burbon blind. I really need to get the 1910 today.
I've love some of the comments because it's giving me other sweet options to do another competition against those WRDO and 1910
Fellow Virginian, land of the lines for larceny bp and Blantons. Keep up the videos!
Great videos man. Surprised 1792 Full Proof didn't show up here. I know you put it in a later video. I've been loving 1920, haven't yet had 1910 yet, but now I shall.
I think he tried to keep the proofs within a certain range, all around 90 or so. 1792 FP at 125 proof would stand out way too much compared to the rest.
loooooove the blind battle videos. every time.
Thank you! My #1 Bourbon is Old Forester 1910...#2 Woodford Reserve Double Oaked...and #3 Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel...👍
Thank you for this. Exactly what I wanted to know. I'm the opposite of the manly-man drinker, need sweetness. Usually go with the flavored type, mostly Knob Creek Smoked Maple, wanted to try regular whiskey but still sweet. Thanks.
I'm looking for a very very sweet bourbon to sip neat on ice I saw your comment and wanted to ask your recommendations I want sweet not like I'm drinking straight burning liqour
I had Wilderness trail cask strength sour mash it was a store pick that was sweet and had a nice flavor to it.
Would it be correct to say that if you're making an old fashioned there's no need for the sugar cube? Or other sweetener?
1910 is absolutely phenomenal 🥃👍
Great review!
Thank you!
I don't get sweet from Woodford Reserve Double Oaked. I get pronounced smokey funk flavor. I wanted so bad to like it. Maker's Mark Cask Strength tastes sweet to me. Love it & great value. Love the Private Select, too.
Great video.....agree about 1910, sweet but with some complexity built in! Do you think you'll get some of those shirts on sale?
I actually launched a Patreon page where you can get them through patronage, but I will be launching an online store as well soon once inventory comes in. The logo will be a little smaller in the final version of the shirts though LOL
You have got to get your hands on a bottle of Jacob Weldon Bourbon. It's from a small distillery in North Texas and has some of the best notes I've ever seen and I would put it up against any of these. Not to mention it's only $24 here. Ya'll may have a new favorite!
You need to try the Family Reserve version of the Wilderness Trail bourbon. It is awesome!
What's different about it from the other Wilderness? I'm getting back into bourbons after being a big tequila fan, so I'm going to start with about 5-7 different bottles. The 1st one I got 2 weeks ago was the Knob Creek 9 SB and really like it.
None I’ve tried compares to Maker’s for sweet delicious smoothness.
So is Maker's Mark 101 considred a sweet bourbon? cuz it's a lot cheaper than $60 1910 here in Arizona.
Can't argue with that. I too reach for 1910 more often than 1920 (both are always on my bar, along with a bottle of home-mixed 1915). In fact, I probably reach for 1910 more than any of the other 40+ whiskeys on my bar.
What is your blend for 1915? Truly 1/2 of each?
@@WhiskeyRow yup. I haven’t bothered with other ratios. The 50/50 just hits the spot for me in a way that makes tinkering with it seem unnecessary.
Same here. I'm more of a scotch ran but I absolutely love the 1910. So dam good
I haven’t had the jefersons , but I like the Wilderness
If you can find store picks of WR they’re so good! Also, if you can get some Peerless they’re pretty sweet. Lots of fruit. Cheers brother.
I have a WRDO Store pick I got in North Carolina that I'm going to open once my current bottle runs dry.
Great job bro!
Nice shirt!
Questions??? Which one doesn't give you a headache in the morning or are all of them good
Just recently got the bottles of Old Forester 1910 and 1920. The aroma of 1910 is sweeter than the taste. Never got a sweetness on the taste pallet. I thought the 1920 was much sweeter than the 1910.
I’m just starting out and I think im going with 1910 or Redbreast 12 as my first bottle. Can anyone give me your opinion on the easier drinking choice between the two. Thank you.
Redbreast 12
@@fbi8364 Thank you
You need to try Coopers Craft Reserve 100 Proof. It’s only $28 in my area and damn good. Brown Forman has got some amazing sweet whiskeys.
I have some on the shelf, I'll have to give it a try. I've had it before, but don't remember it being that sweet 🤷♂️
It’s 39 in VA!
I was lucky and snagged a bottle of Maker’s 101!!! Good stuff
I love MM101!
When you say sweet, do you mean like a wheated bourbon like Maker's 46 or less so. THX
1910 is my favorite too. Have you found a much less expensive bourbon that comes close? 1910 is a bit pricey and looking for an almost there option. All of the other ones in this group are about the same price.
My option for an actually sweet whiskey is Knob Creek Smoked Maple.
that stuff is like pancake syrup!
@@tjwright yep, but it is actually sweet. But bourbons in this video are not sweet at all
Where are you at in va? So hard to find good bourbon here
Old Forester 1910 is always my go to
My wife agrees more with you than me!
I Also like the 1910 over the 1920. I have 3 out of the 5 which is lovely!!! Thx.
Which is your favorite of the 3 you have?
@@WhiskeyRow , I have the Michter's single batch. So I only have the Double Oaked and 1910. I like the 1910 the best. I'm a Rare Breed lover as well. I love Mossburn Irish whiskey Speyside but NOONE ever talks about it. That's ok with me though. 🤫😉
Great video, great recommendations! Angels Envy Rye, while on the expensive side, is extremely sweet - maple syrup sweet.
That is a great idea to do a sweet rye competition, thank you!!!!
Respectfully nasty sweet. I couldn't finish the pour.
I am hooked on 1920. I keep wanting to try 1910, but worried
The 1910… Imagine the 1920 with a little less spice, a little less proof, more sweet notes, and more sippable. If that doesn't sound good, stick to the 1920 because it's fantastic as well
Woodford double oak is my favorite, followed closely by the 1910.. looks like I need to go to the liquor store.. dang🤔
To me there is a comfort in the sweet bourbons. They are easy for me to sip on, perfect around a fire, or just to relax and enjoy
@@WhiskeyRow , I'm having a fire Saturday night.......Johnny Walker Black!!!
The sweetest bourbon or the best sweet bourbon...hmmm... I go for Rare Breed and Blantons.
You can't go wrong with rare breed, it's fantastic!!
I have all of these in my collection except the Jefferson's. All of the others are some of my coveted whiskies. I've got something that I want to send you that would be in this vein, but it's a rye. Interested?
Sure thing, that would be amazing! Email me at thewhiskeyrow@gmail.com and we can work it out
The lateset Barrell bourbon batch 028 is a good sweet bourbon. Caramel and buterscotch with a good body and a higher proof at 108.8
I didn't know that... will have to keep my eye out 👍
Managed to snag Bardstown Discovery and Fusion #4 at the ABC today, hard to find here in NC.
Love Woodford Reserve double oaked
Elmer T Lee sweet as can be . I really like this bourbon. Can still find it in my area a couple times a year
Oh man, I wish that was available to me. I've tried it, but never had a bottle of my own. It's on my list though
Wya ... I need a bottle
Im in the Richmond area. Just be patient...you will see the sour mash pop up
Awesome, that is good to know. It's one I want to keep in my stock
Another great video. Again no cuteness contest, just bourbon talk. Could you mention the price points on each one. Thanks man.
That's a good point, I should've included price… Seems like I always forget something LOL
Wonder how an Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel would compare with these 5 ????
It's truly hilarious listening to what whiskey snobs call sweet and oaky 😂😂😂 and watching them describe all these weird scents, note's and aroma's 😅 keep up the good work you make me laugh every time 😂😂😂
No snobbery here. I like bourbons across price points and share my thoughts. Thanks for contributing to the conversation in such a respectful way and furthering the community
IMO there are two types of “sweet”. A candy sweet. And a chocolate dark sweet. I thought the Wheated bourbons were sweet (candy -ish). But I could be wrong
To me it just depends
I must be a sweet Bourbon guy because you have 5 of my favorite bottles on the table.
Which one of these is the sweetest and easiest to drink?
No Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel?
No, it would have been a good contender for sure, but it is hard to find (around here) and not that available. Maybe I should have included it...
Yes not easy to find- was in VT skiing and found some (got lucky)- - very good- would compete well against 2x Oaked and 1910.
I wouldn’t have even made this video without the Elijah Toasted, right up there with Woodford double oak and OF1910
love the shirt! put the word in the streets!
I setup a Patreon as well as working on an online store with shirts, glasses, flasks, etc. Trying different sample shirts to see what I like lol
Dude! Thank you for Your Sacrifice!.
Lol, yeah... poor me. I honestly have so much fun making the videos!
Can anyone comment on how 1792 Sweet Wheat would compare with these others?
Woooo
I don’t find OF to be sweet, spicy to my palate. I’d be interested to see how you compare JD single barrel barrel strength 130 proof gold label to these.
I think that WT mashbill is like 20-25% rye. I think wheat would be sweeter…or really anything else. Kind of an outlier in this group. I can’t argue with your ranking…just randomly thinking.
True points... so much goes into in addition to the mash bill: barrel treatment (toasting, curing the wood, char duration/level), wood species, barrel location, warehouse location, maybe heat cycling, etc... point is I have had very sweet bourbons with rye and bitter bourbons with wheat. So much of it comes down to the science and art of the distillery. It's a beautiful thing!
@@WhiskeyRow indeed. Cheers!
Larceny!!!!!
yeah, Larceny's delicious
Man...I need to pick up some 1910. I love OF products so that's next on my list. Cheers!
It is really a solid pick, try the double Oakes if you haven't when you can too
Now I gotta go get me a bottle of 1910
I recommend it every time!
I’d honestly throw Elijah Craig toasted into this match up also. Although i do favor 1910 overall.
Go VA!!!!!
Maker's, especially 46 or 101. Maraschino cherries alllllll day.
Double oaked I got dark chocolate sweetness but also cigar notes weird enough
Annnnnnd of course angel's envy
Makers 46 is great. Specially for the price. I can usually grab 2 for 56$ when they on sale in walgreens
I've not gotten cigar notes on it, but I do get chocolate and candy bar all day long
@@WhiskeyRow a buddy of mine had given me a few, I never smoke so I would have to ask him the brand, but the day after when going back to the double oaked, clear as day on the taste. Im just weird haha the power of suggestion!
What are good Virginia based whiskeys?
I love Virginia Distillery port cask finished highland whiskey. It's like a blend between a mild scotch and a bourbon. I recently got into Ragged Branch and it's okay. Reservoir I didn't like at all. Have you found any good ones I should try?
@@WhiskeyRow try the ragged branch double oaked. Distillery up in Charlottesville I believe. It’s really good and another great “sweet” option. I’m from Hampton roads so nice to see a fellow VA RUclipsr on! What part are you from?
@@joncarolino hey John, I'm near Quantico south of DC
Great objective test. So much ahead of the comedians that try to rate whiskey.
Woodford is the best. It’s aged a total of 8 years and uses pot stills. The oak isn’t burnt to sht to get flavors like the old forester. Which needs to burn them because they are only aged less than 5 years. Not to mention old forester is owned by the same parent company and uses the same barrels. Which basically means old foresters entire flavor profile is based on burning the sht out of the wood and forcing the flavors out and it’s really just a young cheap bourbon less aged than even the regular woodford. Burning the barrel to get flavor results in a burnt flavored whiskey. They should have burnt it less and left it in longer but it’s a money grab.
I dig the overly sweet Woodford. It's all about YOUR palate, these reviews are just a way, for me, to rule out the really bad stuff.
Double Oak is sweet? Really. It tastes like eating a two-by-four. And Michters is dry as rye. What about Makers?
Makers is good to me. Sweet, but more of the wheated bourbon sweet with stronger cinnamon than the double oak sweet. Your mileage may very though, cheers!
DO smells like cola to me. But it does taste woody ( I love it tho )
I just don’t get the double Oaked. WR just isn’t my jam I guess
******NOBLE OAK******
Is it just me or is the woodford double Oaked a little on the watery side
I don’t find WR Double Oaked sweet at all. Tastes more like a tire on my palate 🤷♂️
Sad thing about double oak woodford reserve is that its sold here in uk at lower proof at 86.4 proof instead of 90.4proof like in the usa. i don’t know why they do so . Same with the buffalo trace bourbon which they sell here at 80 proof instead of 90 proof like american version . i hate to see proof being cut down for uk market .
Is there some kind of legal requirement there for them to do that?
@@WhiskeyRow i really don’t know about that man but i really want to see buffalo trace sold here at 45% and double oaked at 45.2% So we can enjoy them as well 😔
No such thing as too sweet of a bourbon for me. I want 100% corn mash sweetness or nothing at all. If folks are looking for a true sweet bourbon, Hudson Whiskey is a good place to start.
What’s your favorite!
Larceny!!!!
I hear you, but never really liked the regular larceny. I do like the barrel proof though
I wish I had an opportunity to try Larceny barrel proof, but there isn’t a sweeter “regular” bourbon than Larceny
Larceny is terrible bourbon lol even barrel proof one. Woodford and 1910 are much much better IMO.
@@alekseymel7852 good thing opinions are like assholes
@@alekseymel7852 luckily opinions are like assholes!!!
The woodford reserve double oak is nothing but bitter and tastes like pure alcohol...no sweetness whatsoever
Interesting. I was hoping to try WR DO after a bad experience with 1920 and 1910. 1920 tasted like nasty wood tannins and ethanol and even Dr Pepper couldn’t hide it. 1910 was sweet awesomeness for half the bottle and then turned to bitter wood tannins for second half. I was hoping wood for reserve double oak would be marshmallows, campfire smoke, and chocolate.
It definitely cannot be Woodford double oak
