I don't understand people who don't like these first episodes, but I guess my sense of humor just jived with it from the get go. Being a huge fan of Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi for the past 15 years doesn't hurt either!
The full scope of the queerness of this show slowly reveals itself, and yeah, camp is an inherently q u e e r artform in and of itself, but it's worth the slow burn to get to the full extent of the LGBTQ+ representation in this show. It's really fun and quirky and just also really different and fresh compared to other shows in the pirate genre.
Yes, that is Con O'Neill's voice! You can also see him in Happy Valley, Uncle (his character is quite gender-bendy) and the film Telstar, about the gay music producer (and eventual murderer) Joe Meek.
Binged this entire show in one day after your reaction to the first episode. I regret nothing! It was seriously amazing and so gloriously queer. Just you wait until Blackbeard shows up
A bunch of people have pointed out that Rhys Darby was in the original What We Do In The Shadows movie as well as Flight of the Conchords, but you may also recognise him from the Jumanji sequels.
The thing with the tribal people, is they actively did not go down the racist “cannibal” route that so many stories do. They flipped that narrative on its head and made fun of it. Taika is indigenous and he’s the exec on the show, so he may have something to do with that decision.
My favorite showwwww! You guys are great! Jim is a great character. They really shine later in the season. The next two episodes are where the show takes off and you really see where it's going. Just excellent. Can't wait for the next episode!
This show is definitely a slow burn in terms of gay representation. It's definitely more comedy for sure so just enjoy the show for the humor, expect less and then you'll be pleasantly surprised
what is incredible about this show (among other things) is that queer rapresentation is not what you can usually see on tv shows, it's somenthing completely different and yet so queer and so real. I always feel like this is the world as it should be. And it's incredibly funny!
The Dad jokes were hilarious. As was the sword-swallowing remark. You two laugh so well. It's fun just to watch you interact and banter. I love watching you guess where the show is going. You are funny, warm, insightful, connected, and just friendly. Your tone and way of approaching things is just a perfect fit for this show. Rhys Darby, who plays Stede Bonnet played a hilarious werewolf in What We Do In The Shadows, which has a similar vibe to this show. Irreverent vampire comedy with some queer elements. You might like it. Rhys was also in Flight of the Conchords, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople. The last one, he is in a smallish role. Our Flag Means Death is a real break-out moment for him. Nathan Foad, who plays Lucius the Scribe (the one who convinced his mother he liked girls), is out as a gay man and is the main creative force behind a show called Newark Newark, which is a semi-autobiographical show based partly on his own growing-up in Nottinghamshire. I can't get that show where I am, but you can probably find it easily. Might be fun for you.
I'm really glad you two are enjoying it! This episode is my least favorite episode of the season, but the next two are two of my favorites. See you for the next one!
Think of the first three episodes as Act 1 of season 1. I was kinda bored because this isn't my brand of humor and I generally don't like characters that are just a pack of bumblefucks, but... this isn't a standard sitcom that could go on for an indefinite number of seasons. The plot has structure. They start off establishing the crew as pathetic because the whole story is about misfits who got the short end of the stick. They have to begin at a low point so their story has a place to climb from.
OMG why did you spoiler? That’s the whole point, to discover who Jim is with Jim together ! And maybe show people that the first impression is not always right! (I’m sorry, but it’s really frustrating every time to see this massive spoilers under every reaction and take one of the big plot points and ruin it for the reactors)
Legally, I'd say he did kill him because what happened was the result of his hitting him with the paperweight. Which may not have been the law at the time, but there's a lot of anachronism here, so let's go with it.
This show will really start to hit once Blackbeard shows up.
Most people don't like eps1-3 that much but personally I think this ep was so funny and sweet

I liked the first three. Very cute and funny.
So excited for this.
And there’s so much actual queerness in this show, just you wait.

He was amazing as Val in Uncle.
He was also on Chernobyl.
I recognized him from the series, Cucumber, which also had Fisayo Akinade in it (Mr Ajayi from Heartstopper)
And the queerness continues to reveal itself!
The Captain is Rhys Darby…
He was in ‘What We Do in the Shadows’ and the new Jumanji movies 🤷♀️
Flight of the Conchords too!
Also in a couple of ads that were played ALL THE TIME in the UK.

The captain, Rhys Darby, was in Flight of the Conchords, which is a hilarious show
Also in the What We Do In The Shadows movie

How dare you impugn Con O’Neill’s sexy husk of a voice!
“I! Am! Adequate!” has become a life motto 💜🌈🏴☠️
God, I love Izzy! Lucius and Izzy are my faves (but they're all wonderful)!
Izzy, my gremlin love 🖤🌈
the leather gays have arrived!
The captain is Rhys Darby, from Flight of the Concords. He's a kiwi actor and comedian who's been in a lot of movies in recent years
If you don't know his voice, then you need to watch "Cucumber" and spin off "Banana"
11:47 Jim is not a fucking mermaid! (This will make sense two episides from now)
Haha noted
I'm loving this show and you're both a riot to watch 😂
I'm really glad you two are enjoying it! This episode is my least favorite episode of the season, but the next two are two of my favorites. See you for the next one!
“Great we’ve got a pirate brothel ship.” That’s it! That’s the revenge! A “non stop knocking shop” you might say!
This is just good, plain Fun!!!
Flight of the concords thats Rhys Darby
I can't wait to watch you react to the rest of the episodes. You are going to love this show.

i was hooked by the end of this episode
Hell yeah!! I clicked so fast to watch this!
Mates, you're in for a treat here!! Gay treats xD
Jim actually uses they/them pronouns! Both Jim and the actor that plays them, Vico Ortiz, are nonbinary.
4:51 If you want to hear him as a dungeon master, watch Season 6 Episode 3 of Voltron: Legendary Defender.
you aren’t ready for blackbeard!
I'm so happy you're reacting to this :)))))
I wish you would do two episodes a week!
You two are so funny! Hope you enjoy the rest of the season!! [EDIT: sorry for spoiling, I've removed it]
No spoilers please!

Not sure how the pirate-ness isnt there since we're all just butt pirates

Tbh the hole thing about the show is that non of them really need to come out also Jim is an nb
