Ive been working with still photography for years and have become very familiar with color correction in photoshop and lightroom, but trying to convert that to video was more dificult than i expected. This video really helped me understand the difference in terms with Davinci. (for example lift=shadows, offset= exposure....) Thanks!
My boy... I need you to do a baseline tutorial that explains all of the settings and functions in detail. You're moving way too fast without explaining what each wheel does. Blackmagic's coloring is much more advanced than Premiere and this program is confusing enough.
He also ripped out 1st Tab (Camera Raw). No body shows real work flow it's a waste of time to watch on RUclips tutorial cause people fool, no one wants to show their really work. Camera Raw the first TAB is a game changer on Davinci Resolve.
Quick tip: If you work on a picture for more than 10min your eyes get used to it and do not notice the differences. That's why professional colourist suggest to do the primarily correction on the scoops.
Some friendly advice: there is so much wrong here. First of all, please transform a log image with a color transform or a rec709 luts (built into davinci resolve). By only using color wheels and contrast, you loose a ton of dynamic range and information. After your transform you add a node before that transform to adjust WB/Exposure before the image in converted to rec709 to keep the most information in highlights and shadows (basically to not clip and then recover afterwards). Overall you should use and refer to the scopes more rather than "what looks right". Especially your skin tones are completely off. Just to keep consistency across multiple clips. Also you should look into qualifiers to work with highlights in order to keep information there. This also works for skin tones if you want to lean into a very stylized look. You can isolate that and transform the rest of your grade to what you like. Also have a look into glow/grain to make the image pop more and make it look more professional rather than the basic teal/orange creator look. Just a few tips that are rather easy to apply and make your slog footage that much better. Especially if you lean into teaching it to others. :)
@@ADRdaniel he over exposes to retain the information, then crushes the hell out of it. You can tell he spent hours watching tutorials to get this "look" then just did a how to video changing all the parameters to what he had written down. Overall it's a horrible video.....
thanks Mark, you were my first video into DaVinciResolve17.. and I been so frustrated trying to colour grade this month working on my animation project in post.. so even though I haven't got time to be looking at vids, I thought I'd give it a go and see if I can get some quick short cuts into sorting out the light / colour etc.. and you introduced me to NODE page, I didn't have a clue, I get the basics now, thanks, watching your video definitely helped me to make a start on it all, and I was applying your settings to my video at the same time as I was watching your video, just to see how it would affect, and obviously to put it all into context so I remember more what your showing in the video, in terms of settings of nodes etc.. and it was working at first, my pic looked so much better, but obviously at some point your settings won't bring out the best in mine, but this knowledge of mid tones and all that, I need to get my ahead around and learn... so much more to learn.. it's fun, and fascinating thought.. thanks anyway... I almost considered spending lots on LUTs package, until I came on RUclips and seen your video.. not that I have a. finished result right now but this will defo help for future projects ...
Thank you, this was so helpful! I'm transforming from photo editing to video and never got the colours as nice as in my photos. Got a much better understanding how to do it with DaVinci thanks to your video :)
thank you! some audio advice, bring down some of the low frequencies in your vocal, it sounds smoother, right now theres too much 'exposure' in the lower frequencies. You wanna keep the lows without having much muddiness
That was so interesting! I never did something like this before but now I really want to start! Thank you so much for your hard work I loved this video. 💙
Yo! I just found this tutorial. This was the best color grading tutorial for log footage that I've ever seen. Super helpful!! You've earned my sub!👊🏾🔥🔥🔥
such a great video, so helpful thank you so much !! 👌✨ It's wonderful when a tutorial just jumps in and starts figuring things out :)) Keep up the good work!
So dude, me being new in Da vinci resolve, the color idea is to make every color correction, you need to create a log box for it right? so it doesn't affect the other frames? And then how do you save them all eventually? Just click save?
Question, did you click on your background with that dropper first before you adjusted your temp to make the blue pop like that?? This tutorial is amazing by the way!!
Hi bro nice video but i would like to make a point here on the big mistakes colorists do in the first step there has to be CST color transform which converts the log footage into a proper rec709, Which let the colorist to use the proper dynamic range. Then primaries takes place in balancing the footage.
Hey! I would like to know please if you are using the free Davinci version or the Studio one. I am asking since I´ve been recently having issues with importing my Sony A7S III media to free Davinci version. I am not quite sure if it´s the free version not being able to read the codec used. I recorded my video in 4:2:2 10 bit, 50M. Could you help me please? Thanks in advance :)

Yeah really it is. Photography is much more understandable..

i checked it out first to see what i could see and now after watching this I know what they do.

This helped me tremendously. I went from bad color, to outperforming my LUTs with what I learned here. Thanks man :)

true, I kept my eye on the scope and the highlight is clipped af
is there a chance he wanted to crush the highlights as a creative decision?

Any particular reason you didn't use Color Space Transform to get the SLog3 to a Rec.709 color space?
Great work btw

Slide the “range” on the shadows and it wont affect the midtones nearly as much or even not at all.
