Scottish names were originally Irish anyway. Generally in modern times if it's "Mac" then its from Scotland and if its "Mc, Ó, O', Ní, Nic or Uí" then its of Irish descent.

And it is correct that in Scottish Gaelic 'Mac' means 'son of' so Donaldson and Macdonald, well you could say they are basically the same second name. I am from Scotland and my name is Mclean 😊
