"Culling can improve animal welfare" is a phrase that stuck with me. Sadly it only improves the welfare of the minority that have been lucky enough to be allowed to live. The reserve is no longer a rewilding experiment, but a man managed petri dish which is (for the herbivores at least) about as natural as a beef farm. Heavy mistakes were made early on and sadly it resulted in mass culling. The aim was to avoid intervention at all costs and have it erun independently as its own natural habitat. Sadly that dream was crushed before it could begin.
