As a british guy living in Germany, omg, you realize how hard British English is. You also smile, for you just have to learn so much by ear. The last one, btw, was Welch, so everyone failed 😂

I agree that it’s silly that everyone doesn’t just use the names given to places by the people who actually live there, but it isn’t particularly an English thing. It happens with all languages. The French will call London ‘Londres’, the Germans will call Prague “Prag’ instead of Praha and the Spanish will call Moskva ‘Moscu’, and I think pretty much everyone seems to call the island of Kerkyra ‘Corfu’, despite if being completely different from the Greek. The same with names, everyone seems to have a different derivative of a name like Stephen, for instance - Stefan, Stephanos, Esteban, Stefano, depending on what country you’re from. With reference to other European monarchs, the English tend to pronounce the modern monarchs with the correct names. King Carl, would be pronounced as King Carl, for instance, or King Felipe with the correct intonation, but if they’re going back much further and talking about Carlos II of Spain, they would probably call him King Charles II, as they’re talking about a time, in the Seventeenth Century, that was far less ‘international’, and the common man in the street wouldn’t have had a clue who or what Carlos even meant, so he has become Charles in the history books. It’s very different, now, when the majority of the population travel and have a basic level of education that allows them to familiarise themselves with other versions of names that they know. I assume that is changing all over the world. I agree that it would be great if all nations could pronounce place names in the language of those who live there, though, across the world.

there are cities name in indonesia not weird name but when foreigner (especially english speaker) pronounce, its really weird. for example:
pekalongan (big bat land), when foreigner pronounced it sound like "pick a long one"
banyuwangi (smell good water), when foreigner pronounced it sound like "bang you wang G"
I suggest that you ask people in your next test about Aberystwyth and Cirencester.

You only need to take the Piccadlly line or Northern line for Leicester Square and than you'll hear the pronounciation.
The river Thames is a good example that the English pronounciation doesn't make any sense. Normally you prounounce Th like in The but here you don't do it. German is easier since we speak as we write.
I actually learnt that it became /temz/ after King George (German) struggled with the 'th' sound. So the pronunciation /temz/ stuck.

So I didn't know how to pronounce beaulieu. But you should have been really mean and had them try to pronounce Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch!

I only know of Beaulieu for the car museum, but the spelling still doesn't make sense when it comes to the pronunciation. Butchered is definitely the right way to describe it.
There is an expensive suburb of Chelmsford called "Beaulieu Park" with this exact same butchered pronunciation, and I never understood why the word isn’t spoken correctly in the French way.
I missed Beaulieu because I pronounced it in French and the Welsh one because ... you know.

Ynysybwl is not pronounced with an "ah" at all!! The first letter is pronounced "uh". Try "uh-niss-uh-bool"

Why would Germans know anything about English immigration to the USA? It’s nothing to do with them at all.
Stumbled over this video. It is a bit weird to see the title all the time that English speakers are the absolute worst to say any word or name correctly....in any other language. They even rewrite / rename almost everything there are on the map....why...??? If you for some mysterious reason write a name correct (on f.example a city or country or whatever) you will for sure still butcher the name. Even names on people can you not live without having changed ...just to fit with English sounding names.
Some examples:
- King Carl of Sweden are renamed by the English to become King Charles.... ??????
What is difficult with saying Carl...??? ....and what is difficult with saying the correct name of Sweden ...which is Sverige...???
- What is difficult with saying the correct name of Italia ....instead of your Italy...??? ...and their capital Roma which you call Rome.
- Warszawa / Warsaw, Wien / Vienna, Beograd / Belgrad, Moskva / Moscow, den Haag / The Hague, Lisboa / Lisbon .....the list goes on and on. Others must not just learn your language ...but they also must learn the names of all places on the map ....it's rather annoying.... What if all non-English speakers started to rename everything in UK ...or elsewhere in the English speaking world... ...I'm sure there will come some noises out from you.....
