- In this tutorial I'm recording a part of the song "Matador", by Garland Jeffreys, on a Tascam 414.
Part 1: • Tascam 414 tutorial / ...
Part 2: • Tascam 414 tutorial / ...
Part 3: • Tascam 414 tutorial / ...
Part 1 covers recording of 4 tracks:
Tr. 1 - Drum loop out of Garageband
Tr. 2 - Acoustic guitar, with an old Sennheiser MD421
Tr. 3 - Bass guitar, DI
Tr. 4 - Lead vocal, with the MD421
Part 2 contains a simple mixdown, with a Lexicon MPX500 reverb connected to the Effect Send 1.
Part 3 is an example of how to bounce tracks 1+2+3 to track 4. - Видеоклипы
to anyone else watching for the effect part you can use effect pedals as well.
your voice is awesome!!
Thanks!
It’s awesome that you made some good videos actually showing how to use a 4-track. RUclips has hundreds of videos from people who buy these things on eBay and just wanna play around with tape loops. But the nicer ones are really good little analog mixers - with external FX loops about 20 years before you saw that on DJ mixers! I have a little Fostex X-18 that runs on batteries which is super convenient. But the 414 is a lot nicer.
Hi Raquel, thanks for your kinds words. These analog 4-trackers may be limited in features, compared to digital daws, but I love the hands-on feel of these little machines
Great video ! Quick question, I have about 10 songs that I want to record and probably upload into a RUclips channel or something . how can I do that , I have a tascam 414 also . I am clueless in the recording process . Somebody told me to buy an audio interface and a studio software .
Very cool, and useful info! Do you know what tapes can be used for this, and where to buy them?
Always use Type II cassettes (aka Chrome) if you can. Tascam recommended these back in the days. Don’t use 120 min tapes, so stick with 60 or 90 min. I had good experience with TDK SA60/90, and even better with Maxell XLII 60/90. You’ll have to search for second-hand tapes nowadays :)
Hey Dennis, did you end up liking/keeping this unit? I just picked one up that needs a bit of work, but was wondering what your thoughts were after some time.
Hello! I've enjoyed your videos quite a bit --thanks. One quick question for ya, what's a good way to get reverb on the vocals maybe on a budget? I looked up the device you used in the video, seemed a bit pricey. Or do you recommend to spend a bit for it to get a better sound? Anyway, great video!
Hi Daniel, I would definitely recommend any Lexicon reverb. They also built cheaper models back then. Try to look for a second hand MPX100, MPX110, ALEX, LXP1 etc...some of these worked with presets. Perhaps less possibilities, but also less to think about :) I think I could perfectly work with a preset based reverb myself. Good luck on finding one, and thanks for watching!
@@MultitrackCassetteFans great thanks for getting back. Ok, I'll have look for one of those! You seem to know what you're doing!
Hey I’ve got some questions. Picked this model up a while ago and have had some trouble with recording speed. What I want to know is how I can play the tapes I’ve recorded on a standard cassette player at the speed which it plays on the tascam and which it was recorded as. I’m trying to make tapes for some songs I like. I plug my computer into the tascam and record the songs onto it. Then when I put the cassette into a player it’s all slowed down. The only work around I have found is speeding up the songs through software making them chipmunk sounding and recording that. I can do that but I’d like to learn how to play my songs I record using the tascam on regular tape. I think I need to make a mix down for the master but you don’t cover it. What do you do with your song once it’s finished and mixed so you can listen to it on tape decks.
Hi, sorry for my late response. your 4-track recorder has double speed, so if you play that cassette on a regular player, it will sound slow, exactly half speed. To avoid this, you can mixdown directly to your computer, an after that, you can play the audio file onto your regular cassette recorder
Hey there, thanks for your tutorials!
One question:
How do you go about recording the mixdown itself? With all the tracks and effects on a singel recording?
Would you take another recorder (tape or digital) to record to?
Thanks!
Hi, I record the stereo out signal into my computer. I use a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface, but it can also be done through the stereo LINE IN if your computer has one
Hey thanks for the vids! They help a lot. What cord is it that u have plugged into the mono out? I received a Hosa cpr 203 and it’s doesn’t seem to fit into the line outs or the mono outs. I have the portastudio 414 as well. Thanks!
These are just regular RCAs and 1/4” jacks
So if I complete a song and I want to record more songs on the cassette, how do I make it so the first song can't be messed with
You can fast-forward to the end of your finished song, set tape counter to 000, and switch on ZERO RETURN. That way you can keep rewinding to this point while working on your next song
