    You can see when they press the french press that they didnt brew it properly. The grounds should have sunk to the bottom on their own and pressing should be easy. That's how you know your french press is ready.

    For flavor, chemex can't touch a properly brewed FP. Immersion brewing is superior when done right, which is obviously not the case in this test
    I've used many methods and aside of the syphon, Hario switch produces the richer and tastier coffee. Chemex does good if you prefer a very mild and super clean cup but in terms of flavor, not even close to FP

  • @cw2544
    @cw2544 Год назад +2

    It appears as though they began pressing the french press as soon as the water was added. What about stirring in a little water, allowing a bloom, adding the rest and not pressing until after 4 mins (ready to drink?)
    This wasn't really a test of one coffee making style vs another. It was a test of weak flavoured coffee vs strong coffee. No surprise strong coffee won.

  • @94e88

  • @MorrisDugan

    My favorite might be immersion with better filtering, which I suppose is kind of a hybrid. I've used the Chemex flask to immerse the ground coffee, and then filter it into a jar with a coffee sock.

    French press is more environmentally friendly. No paper filters. I love the french press and I like the nutty flavor. I think you'd get a more intense flavor from a french press.

  • @samuils
    @samuils 2 года назад +2

    I might be off here but, you need to adjust with the brews, if your brew comes out too watery is it not under extracted? This would mean that you need to reduce the grind size to get the fuller body, adjust to the proper body fulness and then do the test. Otherwise let me brake the beans in a half, place them in Chemex and brew with it, well then all of a sudden Chemex will be terribly watery. See what I mean?

  • @gusroden5242
    @gusroden5242 4 года назад +6

    Why did you do one long pour? Try to do your bloom and then 2-3 different pours, that will help with the flavor on a chemex

    You work on a software dev company... perfect place to find people who drink coffee :)
    Also, I agree, coffee taste on pour overs change a lot as it cools down, in my case, I use a V60 and at first coffee tastes very strong, somewhat bitter, but as it cools down, the bitterness is gone and a lot of fruity and interesting flavours start to appear. While french press coffee stays pretty much the same (although I think the texture gets nasty as it cools down close to room temp)

    • @mariai9549
      @mariai9549 4 года назад +1

      I like the "chewiness" of a cafetiere. I've had some Chemex brews turn to lemon juice when cool.
      How fine do you grind for V60? I used to use a finer grind to get the brew time up as some brews were only 1:30 min. I use a coarser grind now and get less bittereness when hot.

    I've used both for years. I prefer Chemex over a French press any day. A good pour-over brings out more of the coffee flavors I enjoy in a good cup of coffee. And before the critics chime in that I'm doing it wrong, I've experimented with various roasts, bean varieties, grind coarseness, steep times, ratios, etc. Different strokes for different folks. That's why the market is saturated with so many methods to prepare coffee.

Anyway nice taste test - would love to see more head to heads between types of coffees. The more complex the flavour pour over / chemex would win is my opinion - low acidity and darkre roasts the French press might come out trumps. Have you done any more of these?

    Were people stating the French press was watery in comparison? That's absurd and you certainly made it incorrect. I love coffee many ways and have been roasting and grinding beans long before is was fashionable. Both give you a lot of control though I will never get to the snob level of weighing coffee and water. Either way I use more grounds than many but French press will always come out fuller and stronger with the same amount of grounds. I still prefer French press and to be honest a high quality drip machine can come pretty close to the pour over without the hassle.

    • @Robinzorz
      @Robinzorz 4 года назад +1

      You are correct, French Press method should obviously be a less watery coffee than the Chemex, as the Chemex gives super clean cup because of the strong filter whereas the French Press gives a strong and full bodied coffee because of the full immersion. For sure they did not do it right.
      Also I don't see how weighing the coffee and water is snobbery. People are not considered snobby weighing their ingredients while making a cake, why would it be snobby for making coffee? To me, it gives a better tasting cup that I enjoy.

    Had to turn this shit off after 2 minutes, here take a dislike. You can't compare 2 methods of brewing coffee if you have a different recipe and blend to being with. Scientific method dictates that you can only change one variable at a time in order to accurately measure its effect. You're comparing a 1:14 ratio in the chemex to a 1:16 ratio in the french press, and that's not taking into account how the grind effects the flavour and the extraction.
