@TheHammondguy My Bad! Should have known better. And I was Patent Counsel for Hammond Organ Company from 1973 to 1976. This was shortly after they phased out the tone wheel organs after developing the electronic organs of that day. They had beaucoup problems in manufacturing those new organs and it would take a tech a long time to make them work with all features after they rolled off the assembly line. Then often the dealer had to do more work on them before delivery to the customer.
It’s a sad fact that a real tonewheel organ would be prohibitively expensive to manufacture today. I’d guess they would have to sell for upwards of $20k and there aren’t that many players in the league that can justify that kind of expenditure. It has met the same fate as the pipe organ and become a beautiful relic of the past. I did some reading up and discovered that my old T500 console is the last of the tonewheel spinet organs Hammond produced. Although it has been sitting at my dad’s house as a beautiful piece of furniture, it hasn’t been played in over twenty years. I’m thinking of having it serviced and made playable, even though I fear that will cost as much as a B3 clone to have fixed up. And then I hear annual service to keep it running smoothly costs as much as dinner for four at a nice restaurant. Some things are worth it though. It’s no B3, but it’s a real 40+-year old Hammond tonewheel organ.
I can see the Jimmy Smith/Jimmy McGriff styling. But at least he allows the original theme to work its way in and be heard. There were times when Jimmy Smith would play something and I knew the tune he named but felt that he didn't - cause I never heard that tune anywhere in what he played. As to this being a "new" B3 - sounds like the old B2 I used to play on Bourbon Street, and it too had a big Leslie Cabinet. (See right of image behind his shoulders when he leans forward or backwards.)
I'm not a Jimmy McGriff expert, and I'm not sure the name of this song, but I have a Jimmy McGriff record called "The Way You Look Tonight" and there are 3 tracks (out of 6) that sound very similar to this piece. ("I Want to Talk About You", "Laura", and "All Soul") I love Hammond music and have records of many of the great players--I might have more Jimmy McGriff records, but I just moved to a new house, so most of my records are boxed up right now. I'll try to look soon.
I believe, my friend, that the piece goes even further back than that. Look up the Celtic tune, Danny Boy. The tune you mentioned was written with Danny Boy's tune, and new lyrics. I'm not attempting to argue, just pointing it out.
What are you insinuating? this man has studied, practiced and worked hard to learn his music. He understands the musical aspects of the blues pretty well if you ask me - from articulation to harmonic language.
do you think you could discern the difference between the original tone wheel B3 and the new electronic B3 version in a blind test with the same performer playing on both? I have my doubts. Not too many people know that John Hammond had to prove that he had a right to call his instruments 'organs' by doing a blind comparison with a pipe organ at the Rockefeller Chapel at the U. of Chicago.
@charliebergy101239 its very hard to tell the difference between the new Hammond B-3 and the old Hammond B-3. This is because some amplifiers in the old Hammond organ sound a little different than the other ones. Its the same as playing the Hammond Elegante XH-272 or the New Roland At-900 vs the Hammond A-405 or Diverisi organ. The Roland At-900 will win everytime. If you really want a good organ. I would get a old B-3 or old hammond concord or elegante and hook a 971 speaker to it.
I have a Farfisa Silver 504 De Luxe, there is just no way to make it sound as good as a Hammond. Unfortunately that's way out of my budget ;). Leon is a brilliant organ player though :).
Finally, an organist who plays what I hear, excellent
Been a fan over 10 years. Thanks for posting.
Crazy!! Really fantastic version of Londonderry Air. Thanks a lot!
Such power and finesse... what a wonderful cat

Seems the B-3 MKII has a brighter tone than the original, but still a great sound. Probably as good as you can get in the digital world.
That's ridiculous, you can't possibly judge the tone on a shitty lo-res clip recorded on a poor quality mic which is distorting like crazy anyway -
Where does this guy live? How can I see him live?!!! Amazing shit!

That piece is taken from an old hymn Amazing Grace (He looked beyond my Fault). Great technique!
