Ten(ish) minute guide to the excellent Lotus 23 that was banned from Le Mans back in the 1960s.
I love that the front fenders are beautifully curved while the rear fenders are literally just straight.
They ran out of styling budget maybe?
If Chapman had only secured French drivers, it would have been all smoothed over.
The irresistible rule bending force met the immovable rule bending objects!
Yeah but that smacks of pragmatism, and it's a well known fact that Lotus spent all of their pragmatism budget every year on the engineering department and personnel solutions was just a temp who was paid in ball bearings
At that time French drivers were shit. Right around late Sixties they would have used Francois Cevert.
@@lestercombs1871Maurice Trintignant, Jean Guichet, Jean Behra were all capable French drivers.
@@mannaclerJean Behra died in 1959.
Grattan is northeast of Grand Rapids, Michigan -- other side of the state from Detroit. It's always sad to see any road course, or even old airport circuit, disappear.
Very unique voice and delivery
Thank you for a very complete and entertaining video. The 23 was best described as "Indecently fast".
What a wonderful piece of design. Chapman... A genius and innovator like no other before or since.
Love it ❤
I was under the impression it was the first competition outing of the Ford Lotus twin cam in its original 1500cc capacity built by Cosworth
Good review. The 23 was indeed an amazing car and probably the last car designed by Mike Costin (please correct if I am wrong). When I finish my Elan project, this will be next on the list!
Thanks for the video! I’ve seen this car run at Road Atlanta during Mitty multiple times and I’ve always been curious about the history of the vehicle.
Happy to have informed! Lot of photos in this video are from down at turn 6/7 at RA. Great track and great event
Excellent video.
Thank you!
Save Gratten!
British MX-5 looking car
Other way around. Miata is inspired by the Lotus Elan
Yeah, and even that might be a bit of a reach, the MX-5 much more looking much more like some of their road cars but not so much the mid-engined stuff. But just my personal opinion. Jeff is right about the timing though - MX-5 was much later
You don't see a lot of dog groomers and "nail technologists" driving around in a lotus 23!
@@jeffdriscoll6096 true that, I threw the actual timeline out the window with my comment
@@lenslr yeah I've been watching a lot of the 2023 MX-5 cup races and got a heavy reminder of them in this video
9:29 "Look at zis, Jean-Pierre. They switched to six bolts. We were right all along, hon hon hon" - some ACO official
😅😅
How about the Lotus T128 LMP2? E92 V8 by JUDD, developed with ByKolles. It raced a little bit and the car's were involved in a lawsuit! Quite a pretty car with a very turbulent history.
I will give it a look. Do you happen to know of any that are racing in vintage/historic/other events? Generally I try to do videos about cars I've had the opportunity to see in person and photograph, but I'm probably going to have to break that principle at some point...
Unfortunately I have no idea if any of them are around. Funny enough I just was at the Rolex Reunion at Laguna Seca back in August so I'm sure we've both seen many similar vehicles that you've covered. @@lenslr
@@CJ-gh4eh I'll see what I can dig up. Yeah I'm an East coaster so haven't made it to Laguna Seca but It's on the list for sure
Did Chapman have anything to do with Lola ?
Not really - he pretty much stuck to his Lotus work. Lola was Eric Broadley's baby
@@lenslr Thank you. Who was it that Ford had under contract for the GT40 Whoever it was he had a hell of a time getting out of it to go back to his cars
@@jacktattis That was Mr. Broadley in the early days of the project - I do cover some of that info in the Lola T70 video, if you're interested. Creative differences between those involved, such as it is.
@@lenslr Thanks I will go and look.
Another amazing car I didn't know about. The ACO should be ashamed of themselves. It continues to this day
They definitely like to pick and choose their favorites. Hurt Glickenhaus and Vanwall for sure
@@lenslr Glickenhaus did pretty well all things considered for a non hybrid, but Vanwall? Colin Kolles I believe continues his tradition of not doing very well. I don't buy the numbers / not enough places argument, especially with LMP2 going and 2025 being 40 cars in Hypercar up from 37.
@@paulreilly3904 I mean, fair. IMSA did Glick dirtier than the ACO but even then, the rules were set from the outright for homologation. Ah well. Someone's always getting the crap end of the stick
@@lenslr Ain't that the truth brother 👍
Fair warning there is an aggressive amount of bass and lower end noise in your mic. Highly distracting and definitely something worth clearing up.
Can you provide some specific time stamps of what you're hearing? Listened through a few times with different headphones/speaker combos and not sure what you're getting at unless it's just my voice in general, which I'm afraid I can't change.
Eh man this car is a great example of "What If".....one of those small designs that can fight huge ass boats we see to this day......God i miss the Deltawing
Yeah I wish they'd kept the deltawing going in its original form for a little while longer. Could have been great
@@lenslr hey dumb question, but do you take requests on things to look at? would love to take an indeph look at Dakar vehicles.
@@wookyfeet1416 not dumb at all - I do, but with a bit of an odd caveat that I usually try to keep the five minute guides to vehicles that I've had the opportunity to see and photograph in person, although that's probably an idiosyncracy I'll have to get over at some point. Any specific Dakar vehicle?
@@lenslr ugh Dakar T4 class ones like Can Am Maverick X3 and Polaris. Seems crazy what they get out of 1000cc engines for endurance rallies
@@wookyfeet1416 I'll see what I can find
It's cOventry, not cUventry
French against British. Never going to get a fair go.
They still aren't over Trafalgar 😅
@@lenslr They have never got over Joan of Arc
Or Agincourt, Crecy, Poitiers, WW2 etc. They pulled the same sort of stunt with rallying. If they can’t win, cheat.
I don't see why they didn't just make the teams have a copilot. Seating problem solved
And a good source of income for all those out-of-work jockeys and gymnasts, as I imagine they'd try to find the lightest weight people that could take the physical strain... Haha
