My understanding of the MV is the real Taemin(the one with plain clothes)has lost his childhood,got separated from family at a young age,got bullied, no freedom to love (idols r not allowed to), treated as a puppet by the industry like telling him how to do stuff like walking, talking etc, it's all making him feel trapped, suffocated with deep wounds inside of him( like he is in jail) but he can't escape because he is seduced by Artist Taemin(the one with fancy cloths)& he is asking the real one to surrender because they are fated to be together.The real Taemin feels guilty for being criminally in love with his artistic version despite all his sufferings & is lost without him.This MV shows all the sacrifices he has done & suffering he has been through to be the idol he is today.It's really deep.
Don't we agree that taemin is the best performer ever? the industry waited 2.5 years to appreciate real art. The MV is the best I have seen in all the music releases this year. the direction, the acting, the choreography, vocals absolutely everything was pure perfection and overwhelming at the same time. Guilty has displaced some of the releases I had as favorites. Taemin really shocked me once again. truly the king of kpop
The way he does dark concepts is so amazing to me. I think if you think about how guilt feels, the video/song represents it perfectly. The way he moves through the corridors and outside, and the choreography feels like he is out of control, and being suffocated by the situation, he is overwhelmed and struggling to understand up from down, invisible and visible hands push him around. You can't help but feel sad or sorry for him, despite him singing that he's done something horrible. And I think it's because, unlike in "Want", he is not proud or embracing it here; his pain, struggle and guilt are obvious. It's haunting. To me, the overall story of the video was that love (and life) is not always cutesy and sweet; it can come with a dark side, conflicting feelings, being intense and too much. You can do things you regret, and it can spin out of control, you can be aware of doing something wrong and not know how to stop, you can want things that are not good for you or someone that you care about. You can hurt people and be aware of what you are doing but not know how to do it better. You can love the wrong people, make mistakes and feel... well, guilty. It's just a very painful side of human experience that we don't like to look at because guilt and shame go together and make us very uneasy.

However with all the comments from the mv director and taemin himself , especially when he mentions how music is a way to relieve him of his trauma,this mv most probably represents how exploited he felt by the industry that debuted a kid and tried controlling but look now, taemin has now become his own genre and very successful idol

The melody and energy of this song took me from beginning to end to the charm of a witch or mermaid. Do you know when a witch or mermaid casts a spell on a person with her melodious, soft and mesmerizing voice? That's what I felt in Taemin's voice, so much so that he uses symbols of enchanted poisoned apples. I heard this song with the image in my head of taemin in the middle of a forest attracting us to him with his singing. Scary but seductive at the same time.
I've read that this song and 'Advice' were the title choices for the cb in 2021 before he went to military. He chose Advice obviously and when he came back this year he revamped the sound a bit to suit the present trends.
Taemin is definitely the idol’s idol. 👑 15 years and still going strong! He seldom does commercial work. Always avant garde. This project seems very emotional, personal. You are my favorite Taemin reviewer for one reason: your sincerity. Am so glad you came to the conclusion that the MV narrative and the lyrical narrative are two different tracks, with some overlaps, that you didn't rush to judgment with what the MV was saying. There is a lot more to the Guilty MV story world, hinted throughout the 3 teaser videos, something Taemin must feel strongly about. I personally prefer to dive in that direction after the live stage promo, if only to extend the promo period, and to keep the media chatters on the sexier narrative track. Anyway, really enjoy your expressions as usual. Keep up that authentic streak!
My thoughts - Taemin is playing dual character ,the real one(in plain cloths)who is innocent is seduced by Artist Taemin (the one in fancy cloths)who wants him to surrender himself to him because they r fated to be together, the real one falls for it & that brings hardships to his life like loneliness, lost childhood, bullying, no love life, being treated as a toy by the company.He feels quilty for being greedy & for being criminally in love with his artistic version which he can't escape because without him he is lost. So I think the visual representation goes perfectly well with the lyrics.
We are all so immensely privileged to get to witness the way Taemin processes his own trauma through art like he does not have to do that but he is so open and generous with himself and his heart and it’s part of what makes him so special

In case anyone wants to know why they feel so emotionally stirred: Taemin deliberately crafted two layers in the MV, with hyper specific message that was lost in translation. I made an explainer video for that. Taemin took great risks to say something he needed to say, hear him out!
Normally we will have a performance video (not for Guilty) but we don't know when. Also the trailers/teasers are important to understand the story of the mv 😉
Man, I was a bit scared because of the teaser pictures that seemed a bit low quality but once again Taemin just proved that he's really on a whole different level. I love this so much. Pure art.

He seems to be portraying Poison™ in all it's aspect; by Illness (asthma) or Loving Sick (the metaphor) in a world depicted as dystopian where Love is Poison, where falling in is punishable and will put you in what looks like a camp, but as the music (the world) progress there is anarchy and rebellion against this system, altho he never seems to be able to escape since he'll be snatch away all over again (the end of the 1st teaser) or perhaps we are seeing past present and futur in a mess (enjoying love and friendship before being detained, watching his friends going mad, feeling helpless but aware and then fighting for justice, a simply amazing plot, could definitly watch a movie or series about this world thank you for the reaction! pls excuse my english for any mistakes!! 🙏

taemin is such amazing artists his songs always have a deep and philosophical meaning that sometimes is difficult to understand sometimes I don't understand it either lol but I love it!
I absolutely loved this comeback. The song, his voice, everything. The dance (since I am more into contemporary dance, I like it even more), the video, really everything. We missed Taemin and he came back stronger than ever, in the most beautiful way he could. I don't know who is the team behind his music, dance, videos in SM, but they always do an amazing job.
Taemin is A.R.T. ❤ my thoughts - Guilty represents the thoughts in our heads and the guilty pleasures within. The images is in his mind (real or unreal) that forms himself as a living being - like all of us. Also I read from one comment that was inspired by a book Guilty (Georges Bataille) where Taemin said he was fond of. Last comment not too sure as I didn't hear him say exactly that but there is resemblance.
Hi Aaron, thanks for delivering us another amazing review, this time of Taemin's Guilty launching video. In the end of your review, when you analyze the lyrics, you suggest there's not that much connection between the lyrics and the video contents itself and you ask for us to share our opinion too. Here's mine: I'm not that Taemin follower who is aware of every move in his career and personal life, but I've bumped into some news that he had a depressing experience in his days in the military. Some scenes of the video show a dormitory full of young people that could be associated to a military dorm. At the same time, one could compare such a place with a hospital or similar institution dedicated to treat mental illness patients or, even, drug addicts. In fact, some flashes bring what appears to be male nurses manipulating the bodies of these young people, like conditioning them while they are in a sort of anguish. Could be these repressing institutions, this merciless society trying to shape, restrict and contain the liberty, creativity and expression of these new generations? There's a take in which Taemin's character appears trying to breathe by a inhaler... He's suffocating. In another he has scraped his own flesh in agony and hangs on the legs of what seems to be a hospital caregiver, like a drug addict who is in treatment and at the mercy of who is molding him to be normal like all the others. ...but suddenly he appears with a crown of feathers in his head, surrounded by all who seem to support him... As in... He cannot be framed by the system, he's the king who stands in the crowd... In spite of suffering so much inside. In this interpretation the lyrics could be seen as a subtle hint to addiction to medication against depression and/or drugs that many young people undergo due to the pressures of trying to adjust to so many social expectations. It's not only a love fixation, it could be something more: "(...) Poison apple Spellbound, you wanna take a bite? Hand outstretched In danger, sinking deeper Just a little more, that’s all it takes Messing you up, I throw it all away Gift you once as a bait, then I take everything Make you addicted, you can't tell pain from love That's what we've become (...)" As a matter of fact, the kPop idols live in an enormous competitive industry in a country in which expectations of success are huge in every area what, by the way, results in one of the biggest suicide rates worldwide (according to the World Health Organization, it's the fourth highest in the world still this year 2023). I could not avoid thinking of Moonbin, whom many attribute suicide as cause of death, but koreans are very reserved when talking about these matters. It could be a tribute to Moonbin and others who are suffering mentally up to relying on chemicals to ease the pain, eventually sinking to addiction. If this reading is right, the lyrics and the video are very correlated. ...and I would extend my congratulations to Taemin and his team not only due to the elevated value of this work artistically, but to expose, even if implicitly, a very important subject to the south korean society and all nations around the world, to strengthen the networks of support against mental illness, drug addiction and suicide.
Taemin said the song and video concept came from a 1957 book he had read. 'L 'Erotisme by French philosopher George Bataille. George Bataille expressed his desire instrest to explore complex emotions.
I just love anything in a modern waltz tempo these days. It just gives so much room for drama and vocal exploration together with moments for syncopation. As for the free-form lyrical contemporary dance style, kinda reminds me of what Sean Lieu would do, so I'd like to investigate to see who had a hand in it.

He seems to be portraying Poison™ in all it's aspect; by Illness (asthma) or Loving Sick (the metaphor) in a world depicted as dystopian where Love is Poison, where falling in is punishable and will put you in what looks like a camp,
but as the music (the world) progress there is anarchy and rebellion against this system, altho he never seems to be able to escape since he'll be snatch away all over again (the end of the 1st teaser)
or perhaps we are seeing past present and futur in a mess (enjoying love and friendship before being detained, watching his friends going mad, feeling helpless but aware and then fighting for justice,
a simply amazing plot, could definitly watch a movie or series about this world

I absolutely loved this comeback. The song, his voice, everything. The dance (since I am more into contemporary dance, I like it even more), the video, really everything. We missed Taemin and he came back stronger than ever, in the most beautiful way he could. I don't know who is the team behind his music, dance, videos in SM, but they always do an amazing job.

Taemin is A.R.T. ❤ my thoughts - Guilty represents the thoughts in our heads and the guilty pleasures within. The images is in his mind (real or unreal) that forms himself as a living being - like all of us. Also I read from one comment that was inspired by a book Guilty (Georges Bataille) where Taemin said he was fond of. Last comment not too sure as I didn't hear him say exactly that but there is resemblance.

thanks for delivering us another amazing review, this time of Taemin's Guilty launching video.
In the end of your review, when you analyze the lyrics, you suggest there's not that much connection between the lyrics and the video contents itself and you ask for us to share our opinion too.
Here's mine: I'm not that Taemin follower who is aware of every move in his career and personal life, but I've bumped into some news that he had a depressing experience in his days in the military.
Some scenes of the video show a dormitory full of young people that could be associated to a military dorm. At the same time, one could compare such a place with a hospital or similar institution dedicated to treat mental illness patients or, even, drug addicts.
In fact, some flashes bring what appears to be male nurses manipulating the bodies of these young people, like conditioning them while they are in a sort of anguish.
Could be these repressing institutions, this merciless society trying to shape, restrict and contain the liberty, creativity and expression of these new generations?
There's a take in which Taemin's character appears trying to breathe by a inhaler... He's suffocating. In another he has scraped his own flesh in agony and hangs on the legs of what seems to be a hospital caregiver, like a drug addict who is in treatment and at the mercy of who is molding him to be normal like all the others.
...but suddenly he appears with a crown of feathers in his head, surrounded by all who seem to support him... As in... He cannot be framed by the system, he's the king who stands in the crowd... In spite of suffering so much inside.
In this interpretation the lyrics could be seen as a subtle hint to addiction to medication against depression and/or drugs that many young people undergo due to the pressures of trying to adjust to so many social expectations. It's not only a love fixation, it could be something more:
"(...) Poison apple
Spellbound, you wanna take a bite?
Hand outstretched
In danger, sinking deeper
Just a little more, that’s all it takes
Messing you up, I throw it all away
Gift you once as a bait, then I take everything
Make you addicted, you can't tell pain from love

As a matter of fact, the kPop idols live in an enormous competitive industry in a country in which expectations of success are huge in every area what, by the way, results in one of the biggest suicide rates worldwide (according to the World Health Organization, it's the fourth highest in the world still this year 2023).
I could not avoid thinking of Moonbin, whom many attribute suicide as cause of death, but koreans are very reserved when talking about these matters.
It could be a tribute to Moonbin and others who are suffering mentally up to relying on chemicals to ease the pain, eventually sinking to addiction. If this reading is right, the lyrics and the video are very correlated.
...and I would extend my congratulations to Taemin and his team not only due to the elevated value of this work artistically, but to expose, even if implicitly, a very important subject to the south korean society and all nations around the world, to strengthen the networks of support against mental illness, drug addiction and suicide.

I just love anything in a modern waltz tempo these days. It just gives so much room for drama and vocal exploration together with moments for syncopation. As for the free-form lyrical contemporary dance style, kinda reminds me of what Sean Lieu would do, so I'd like to investigate to see who had a hand in it.
