- This merry tune is most known from the SEGA Mega CD Sonic game called ''Sonic CD'' in 1993, it is the main theme of the Japanese/European soundtrack of the game sung by the beautiful Keiko Utoku, but it may interest you to know that this song was actually originally from Sonic The Hedgehog 2 on SEGA Master System and SEGA Game Gear a year earlier in 1992. It plays in the Green Hills Zone. I decided to throw in a video of the original 8-bit zone to see what it would look like heard with this superior 16-bit version.
I know this song has been uploaded quite a few times ranging from so many slightly different versions by various RUclipsrs, but here's another version of the classic tune.

This likely due to Green Hills originally being the 1st zone, and never beefed up the difficulty. What proves this is that the Sonic 2 GG Autodemo first starts in a very early Green Hills, with similar ring layouts to the final
Those rings sure help prepare a few extra extra lives - I feel more so attempting to get to the boss than to fight it (I still acknowledge the challenge of the boss fight) - all those long, spikey trampolining leaps of faith/estimation/luck.

I know it was technically used earlier for this game, but...the track is so obviously meant to be something with lyrics, it had to have already been in development for CD, then they stuck an 8-bit rendition in here when that track was finished while the rest of CD was being worked on.

Different story, you see, the composer lent the music for a “greater” purpose, which was for the intro for Sonic The Hedgehog CD in 1993
@@SIG7Pro - Actually, his theory may be correct, considering the fact the v0.02 build of CD was compiled about 3 months after the REV00 build of the SMS version. This, and the fact that the intro animation was implemented in that build suggests the 8-bit Sonic 2 and CD were both in development at around the same time.
Honestly i think this version was compose first and then later reused for sonic cd because it matches the other songs melody style

Honestly this sounds more like what this music would be if Sonic 2 GG had an FM sound enhancement chip than a Genesis remix.
nope, the YM2413 just can't sound like this, this is definitely the YM2612 (and no, a YM2612 wouldn't work with a Game Gear - it requires an ~8MHz clock signal).

Fun fact: This genesis arrangement was used into SATSEE (Sonic and The Secret Extended Edition), which is a Sonic 1 rom hack and it's use is on the 2nd Splash screen and the title screen.
I'd bet the 8 bit Sonic 2 version is the more common version unless sales of Sonic CD in Europe and Japan were higher than Sonic 2 on the Master System and Game Gear.

Sonic 2 wasn't even released in 1991 so it can't be the 91 version.
The Master system version was realeased in late 1991 and the game gear version in 1992
Why they didn't take this track for the Mega Drive Saturn Dreamcast or now i would play this game no matter how they fuck it up^^
