  • In this 17 minute free tutorial I introduce you to "Instant Meshes."
    "Instant Meshes" is a free re-topology program that takes in triangulated data or point could data and creates quad meshes that are then exported into a 3ds Max readable format.
    This is quick start introduction to the Instant Meshes/3ds Max workflow.
    Here is the link to Instant Meshes:

    Here is a link the 3D scan data used in the video:

    Thank you for this tutorial. This is exactly what I need for my next project.

    great tutorial, i'll want to give this program a try soon! too long i spend my working days taking badly made sketchup and cad chairs and painstakingly remeshing them to lp quads + turbosmooth

      You'll still need to do some work. It's not a perfect solution but it does get you farther down the road than doing it manually from scratch

    Im really surprised something like this is not implemented inside 3D Max. We're on 3D Max 2017 and still no simple remesh modifier? ProOptimizer is pretty old, messy, and triangulated. We're pointed to other applications such as "Instant Meshes" and ZBrush. Great video though! Thanks for the tut.

      I agree. I would like to see it in 3ds Max as well. But Autodesk as other applications like Recap and Remake that do this so I doubt will see it inside 3DS Max natively anytime soon. I'll be doing more tutorials on 3DS Max being used with reality capture applications so stay tuned.

      As we're stuck with this ATM, I wrote a script to at least make the exchange smoother, www.scriptspot.com/3ds-max/scripts/instant-meshes-bridge

    this looks pretty cool, similar to zremesher for zbrush but with some interactive feedback

    so its basically an external zremesher from zbrush?

      Sorry I don't use Zbrush so I don't know authoritatively if that's the case or not.

      @Carlos Arroyo,
      1. you need to download "instant-meshes-windows.zip" (if you work with windows) and "instant-meshes-master.zip"
      2. unzip "instant-meshes-windows.zip" => you see "Instant Meshes.exe"
      3. unzip "instant-meshes-master.zip"
      4. copy all files from the folder "instant-meshes-master.zip" into the folder instant-meshes-windows
      5. double click on "Instant Meshes.exe" => program is running great
      I hope I could help you.

    Instant meshe is unfortunately doing a lot of garbage mesh and cleaning the mesh can take a lot of time so i use Mudbox retopo since topology follow contours and is clean. I know Mudbox is not free but hell it's worth the 10 $ a month alone just to get clean retopo.

    @3dsmaxtrainer Have you had any success with the moving/deleting of singularities? Olga shows it in the video on their site, but I click a million times with the magnet tool and maybe one out of a hundred actually moves them. Also, I have no idea how to delete them entirely. I feel this could make the application much more useful by essentially telling it to ignore scan artifacts.

    No symmetry?

    • @3dsmaxtrainer
      @3dsmaxtrainer  7 лет назад +1

      No sure what you mean? With point clouds there isn't any symmetry. The topology is derived from that ... so symmetry would be hard to do I think.

    • @RebeccaBrunner
      @RebeccaBrunner 7 лет назад

      3dsmaxtrainer well then this isn't a good option for me.

    • @DonBloomfield

      Symmetry for drawn lines would be handy I think. And a basic assumption that you want a retopology with symmetry as far as possible would be nice too.

      you can actually do so that, if you work with mirror tool while sculpting you delete mirror tool and then export it and when its done export it back to software and use mirror tool and merge and voilà you got it evenly topologied both sides :)

      That wont work unless you can close the hole in the mesh, it messes up on instantmeshes. Go ahead try it.

    Unfortunately the topology is far from ideal compared to the king of the hill Zremesher!
