About Kalpana Chawla:
Kalpana Chawla, PhD, was an engineer, pilot, and astronaut who spent more than 30 days in space over two Space Shuttle missions. Chawla was born in Karnal, India, and was fascinated by flight since her childhood.
Kalpana Chawla joined the NASA Astronaut Corps in March 1995 and was selected for her first flight in 1996. She spoke the following words while traveling in the weightlessness of space,"You are just your intelligence". She had traveled 10.67 million km, as many as 252 times around the Earth.
On December 5, 1997, Kalpana Chawla returned from space and the world celebrated the successful flight of the first Indian woman in space. ...

Kalpana loved writing poetry and participated in school dances.
She obtained her masters degree from the University of Texas and earned a doctorate in aerospace engineering from the University of Colorado in 1988. Chawla began working at NASA's Ames Research Center the same year, working on powered-lift computational fluid dynamics.
Kalpana's first space mission in the space shuttle, Columbia, was 15 days, 16 hours and 34 minutes long. During this time she went around the earth 252 times, travelling 10.45 million kilometres! The crew included a Japanese and a Ukranian astronaut.

Kalpana Chawla could not return from space because Kalpana Chawla's spacecraft crashed while returning from space and all seven other fellow astronauts including Kalpana Chawla were killed. Kalpana Chawla was an American scientist of Indian origin, who worked in the US space agency NASA.

कल्पना चावला अंतरिक्ष से वापस नहीं लौट सकीं क्योंकि अंतरिक्ष से लौटते समय कल्पना चावला का अंतरिक्ष यान दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हो गया और कल्पना चावला सहित अन्य सभी सात साथी अंतरिक्ष यात्री मारे गए। कल्पना चावला भारतीय मूल की अमेरिकी वैज्ञानिक थीं, जो अमेरिकी अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी नासा में काम करती थीं।
