Same!! I play Guitar, Bass, Drumms and Piano beforehand, so i thought it obvious to try a classical instrument (though mine is electric for convinience).. Thoes two have insipred so many people that it's insane..
I am 49 and I just got out of homelessness -- lost everything, left with a totally clean slate. As I'm rebuilding my life, I just bought a violin and I can't wait to play the instrument I have wanted to play, but mom said "no." I'm so psyched!
I'm 77 years old and here I go! I have a beautiful violin that is over 100 years old. It belonged to my grandmother who was a violinist in Vaudeville pre-1920. I LOVE classical violin as well as Bluegrass fiddle music. I spent 10 years taking my granddaughter to violin lessons and encouraging her with her playing; she became so good that she was the musician from her school selected to play her violin in the All-State Orchestra. She also attended Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan on a scholarship three summers in a row and played in the orchestra there and studied violin with some fantastic teachers. She's now in college and I miss having someone around playing so suddenly I thought that I should be the one playing and taking lessons. So age ain't nothin but a number!
I'm a 19 year old firefighter and going through EMT school and i love the violin the music is so beautiful and have always wanted to play but i don't have time for classes and you make by faaaaar the best online tutor videos thank you so much I plan on buying your lesson book very very soon
Same here, combat engineer in the army. After work and workout it's seems their is no time to even eat. Hope you are doing great and you learn how to play it.
I've told myself my entire life that I couldn't play the violin. Recently at a live show, I realized that I defeated myself all along. Violin music heals my soul and I shifted my thinking and perspective. The next day I reached out to our Buy Nothing group and was gifted the most beautiful German violin. It's at the repair shop now and I pick it up next week. My actual lessons start in two weeks. When I found your channel, I knew that I found a new mentor from afar. I printed your music sheets and fingering charts and am so grateful to you those! Thank you for posting your videos and for helping those like myself just starting out on this incredible journey. Gratitude my dear!
I've been wanting to learn the violin half of my life (I'm only 19 lol) and the past 6 years have been hell for me. Shit home, shit mental health. But now, everything is finally changing and I just spontaneously ordered a cheap 50€ violin. I couldn't be more excited.❤️🌸
Hi..I am vietnamese. 60 years old. I learn violon myself. Since i knew your teaching violin chanel. I have improved my skill of violin everyday by watching your teaching online. It is very easy to understand and practice....i have make progress from then. Thank you ..thank you so much...
YAAS! You've just started updating these lessons the day I've ordered my very own Mendini MV300. It's fate Alison. Looking forward to the journey ahead!
I’m so happy to find your video. I learn violin when I was young and stopped after a few months because my teacher constantly twist, pull and smack my short pinky. She even call me stupid. Well as an adult i don’t give a flying hoot if someone calls me that but as a kid, it hurt my pride. Fast forward to 35 years later, I want to learn to play the violin properly. I’m going to do it now. Thank you for your work! :)
Just picked up my fiddle after letting it sit for a year do to an injury, clicked on my go to violin teacher, Alison, and what perfect timing. All new lessons for 2017..Thanks for this Alison.
I'm only 16 but you're videos have giving me the envy to learn that instrument when I was a kid I wanted to play piano but with the years I discovered that with a violin you can do all types of musique and 'til now I've never considered learning how to play the violin but now I pretty much want to! So thank you if one day I buy a violin I will already have the basics
Thank you Alison. Your feedback about your course is very encouraging especially for those who are exploring the idea of learning to play the violin by ourselves. It is a good feeling to know that after 30 lessons, I will have enough skills to continue to progress on my own at my own time. Your contribution is very much appreciated.
I just bought a used violin because it was cheaply sold , I have decided to give it a try Instead selling. Today is my first day and you are my first teacher. Thanks
Thanks for the lessons! I started violin when I was around 9 ish and stopped when I was 11. I'm now 17 and wanting to start again - thank you for putting me back to basics :)
I have been playing but not consistently for 23 years, self taught and by ear. My fiddle (I am no violinist) is a $100 job from Aldi. An expensive one would not make me any better. Playing old time, bush and folk. No shoulder rest? Me either, but I knitted a woollen pouch, made a wee pillow and stuffed it, tied on to the chin rest attachments, just by one edge. It goes into position when I put it up. And I have an "ear" student. Funny, its said we teach what we most need to learn, so I am learning lots of tips. No doubt the classical teachers would have a fit! No, the sessions are free, a gift to be given. But I play other things, watched the fiddlers for years and got tips (and was gifted a cheap fiddle). Mine now is 3/4 size, I am tiny. 76yo in Australia.
i'm in high school and i've been playing violin for six years, but i've really fallen into a creative block this year and have been questioning a lot of the work i've done. i want to try and go back to basics and approach everything in a new light again. thank you for making these videos
THANK YOU SO MUCH, I love how in depth you go into explaining everything, I'm a complete new beginner to violin and I've been wanting to learn forever, your videos are amazing!!! ❤❤❤
wow if I could give more than one thumbs up I would. I missed playing an instrument after many years of stopping and I always wanted to learn the violin but felt discouraged because i thought lessons were expensive. Im trying to start learning on my own and i found your channel and just have to say thank you so much for all your videos and knowledge, this has seriously brought joy into my life. Thank you!
I haven't played the violin in 10 years. Went and saw a concerto for my birthday so now I've broken it out and dusted off only to realize I don't remember a single thing 😅 Thank you for these videos!
I got my violin about a week ago (1st time even holding it) :) and today was the day that i was manage to tune it (sounds beatiful ) and everyone is laughing at me for getting the violin (i play guitar for time to time) and i have to thank you LADY for all those lessons, downloaded PDF sheets and got my first 2 hour open strings practice :D even tho my arm hurts i feel happy and confindent and THANK YOU for making it all possible and looking forward learing beside you.... CHEERS
I haven’t played the violin since 2 years ago at a school play, I never really learned how to properly play as it was an easy role, I’ve always put it off but I’m really motivated now especially since it’s quarantine, I can’t wait to see my progress with your videos, I remember it helped me back then!
I'm getting back into violin after years of not learning anything. I had only 1 year of instruction with a teacher in a music store. I couldn't find lessons to the new place I moved to and so I gave up for years. Someone suggested your online lessons and after watching this I have already learned a more comfortable way to hold my bow. :) I am excited to learn again. Thank you for putting up these videos. I can't wait to dive in now.
Been learning to play the violin for a few months now with classes, but well, they're expensive, so i decided to come online to see if i could sorta teach myself with online videos. Thank you for this playlist!
Hello Alison, After going around my local thriftshop and seeing some refurbished violins for sale, it just sparked my long last desire to learn how to play the violin that I had since I was a teen, I'm turning 30 this year and I finally decided to give a try after I landed on your incredible channel (wasn't hard since you're the definite violin teacher here on YT). Fast forward a *few* videos and I just received my ordered Stentor student violin that you recommend for beginners and I'm currently on lesson 5 (learning how to play the Open Stringes exercises) and I'm having a total blast while my only regret is to not have started sooner. With all this, I just want to throw in another message of appreciation for this amazing gift that you've given us all violin-to-be-enthusiasts that never expected to have taken this step further into really learning this beautiful instrument with your incredible and clear as day teaching methods and wording that everyone can understand, what could have seemed a little bit daunting is actually much easier to lean into thanks to your kind teaching and charisma. I'm going to keep learning and improve so I'm looking forward to more lessons and content from you! For everyone else, please don't give up if you're already learning and for those who are still undecided and want to learn the violin, then don't wait any longer and give it a try, if it's something that you've always liked, then it will just click and trust me when I was say that the feeling to picking up and setting up your violin for the 1st time is hard to put into words as it also playing your first strings.
Thanks for the lessons. My three-year-old is studying violin under a teacher, and I am studying under you. As a long time guitar player, learning the violin is no picnic, but I am picking it up. I find the guitar solo from "Stairway to Heaven" to be a cakewalk, but playing "Twinkle Twinkle" on the violin is a mighty challenge.
I don't even have a violin yet, but have been practicing holding a bow with other things after watching this. Held one for real today, got complimented on how I was holding it. I will have one soon! Thank you for the lessons!
Hi! 3 years ago i got my hands on a violin. I tried to teach myself via youtube like i did with the piano. I had the feeling that my bad bow and violin holding blocked my progress. I played for some months/weeks but the frustration kept going bigger. So i stopped. The violin is still in my room and i thought "one day you have to start again" This day is coming soon and i hope your videos will help me growing 😊
I finally bought a violin yesterday after 3 years of wanting one. I play the guitar already (im mediocre), but wanted an instrument more to my style. This video is very helpful as the book diagrams aren't too explanative. I'll be watching along as I get through my lesson book. Thanks!
I've been watching your lessons for a really long time even though I didn't have a violin, but now I finally got one :) your lessons are really helpful! They helped me get the hang of the violin really quickly
I just got a violin like... An hour ago. Wanted it from months and now im finally going to learn it! Absolutely awesome lesson! Started from the very basic. Thankyou so much!
Watching this even though I don't have a violin 👁💧👄💧👁 Anyway, I can't believe you are giving violin lessons for free. Thank you ❤ This makes me want to save up money to buy myself a violin
Good Day, I am a total greenhorn so I just jumped into this and picked up a Saga/Cremona SV-165 and am in the process of setting it up and learning on the fly. I hope my choice in violin was a decent one, time will tell, I have watched many of your videos and will be going forward with your 30 lesson program Take Care
Hooraaay! I'm just about to pick my violin back up after 10 years of not playing so these videos are going to come in super handy for refreshing my memory and I'm just in time for the updated videos 😁
I’m just about to purchase my first violin but was really anxious about learning. I came across your tutorials and started watching them and now I can’t wait to start. Thank you so much for making it not seem as scary as I thought 😊
you are a freaking legend !, thanks a lot for free lessons !, and worry not i will also buy your book soon enough, i'm in mid 20s and now just start learning violin, not only that, this is the first musical instrument that i ever learn !, you have no idea how much you helping me right now :D
Hi Allison, I want to thank you for your tutorials. I dreamed of playing the violin for a lifetime! I started to follow you for only 4 months but I have already been able to insert an accompaniment on my Christmas covers and for me it is a big step! thanks thanks thanks... A big hug from Italy!
I just recently buy violin so I'm totally beginner. I find your tutorial very good and most easily to understand for those who started to play. 😊 Thank you ma'am for this wonderful video.😆
I Finally got my FIRST Violin!!...Im 64 ..and hope Im not to late??..anyways im glad i found your LESSON"s ..you explain steps at a way i can relate to....Thanx!!!!!.......& yes Im Going all the way!!!!
Oh so glad you’ve done this. I spent Friday evening scrolling though your videos for the violin lessons. My daughter started learning in July so we’ve been following you and have enjoyed watching your tutorials 😊
cool, i just picked up an el cheepo violin from a used thing place, its only a 3/4 student one with case and bow, but already i am banned from playing in the flat. :( i scared the cats, the neighbours dog and sent the chiwawa down the road into a frenzy ) :D so yes i am looking to sort this out. thankyou for your videos and content
if your an adult you should use a 4/4 violin, 3/4 is just too small. If you wanna play in a flat, like i do you should use a mute. I would recomend a metal mute.
I do not know yet your name, but I feel grateful to see individuals like you sharing with us to make our dream come true. I always wanted to play violin since I was a child. I just made the decision to learn following your lesson, and guess what, I bought my Mendini MV500 4/4 full side violin last week, and I have made the total decision to learn playing violin, and know how to play "Amazing Grace", that is what I will do first.Thank you, your lesson are easy to follow, and love your British pronunciation. I have one request for you : can you play Amazing grace with the violin for me!!! Thank for motivate me in this new adventure.
Never touched a violin a day in my life, I'm 23 right now. I've always loved the sound and musical scores of a violin though, so i figured it's high time I start acting upon my interests. Any tips would help please and thank you. P.S. I've played band in middle school and High school but it was on a Trombone...not sure if that has anything to do with string instruments.
Im 59..it was my bday gift so here i am trying to earn a violin I PLAY OTHER instruments but this is a new frontier Lol....no sound....i got it first try. Thank you fir begginer lesson.
So, really, really, really basic question here. How do you put a violin away, proper? It probably should be common sense, but I'd rather be safe than sorry, and Google results have been... less than informative.
After playing/practicing, make sure you wipe down the violin and the wood of the bow with a soft cloth. This is so rosin doesn’t clump up in the hair/the strings. Put the violin in your case and make sure when you shut it that nothing is jamming. Put the case in a very moderate temperature room (nothing too hot or too cold - it can throw off the tuning). Make sure it’s not at risk of falling. Hope this was helpful!
I realize that I'm 11 months late, but just in case anyone needs this: Always loosen your bow when you put it away. You don't have to loosen the hair a crazy amount, but enough to relieve tension. Prolonged stress will wear your bow out faster
This will be good for your new subscribers that didn't see the originals. Oh on a side note, I'm going to be creating an original instrument, a massive hammer that will be a string instrument for a cosplay I'm designing from JRR Tolkiens world. The strings will go up the handle of the hammer and the music would come out the head. Kinda like a hammer shaped cello that can kill and destroy. It won't really work as a instrument but would be insane if it did. :)
How am I stuck on the first step... >o< I can’t figure out how to hold the violin with my chin/jaw sitting comfortably on the rest without the violin falling off... I’ve tried everything! Anyone can help me...? Ox
Are you using a chin rest I struggle to hold the violin without it ... if not try placing a sponge underneath and securing it with an elastic band ... it's what my violin teacher in high school told me to do. Hope that helps x
You're clearly talented and I appreciate these lessons so very much! One thing I would love to see you change a little bit is that you explain in 5 minutes what it would take you about two sentences to say. My children are really losing interest, so I'm watching the video and then showing them what to do. Again, you are amazing, your content is amazing, and your generosity in doing these videos is amazing! Thank you! :)
Thank you for your feedback, but please bear in mind that I make these videos for literally an unlimited audience. If I made the video in 5 minutes and moved on, a good 90% (or more) of viewers would not understand and would come away with more questions. If you had a private tutor, they would obviously teach at your pace. For a video where I have no idea of the audience, I need to make sure to teach to everyone, and properly - which is what makes my channel/videos/courses so successful. You know, you can always click the cog at the bottom and speed the videos up...
I just got a violin for my birthday yesterday, and I’m excited to start playing the violin.. My sister also has a piano and will be watching your videos thank youuu!!
thank you for the update.. im having difficulty in holding my violin in place.. i get used to griping the violin with left hand.. now that i a correcting it.. my violin slides down :'( i have no shoulder rest when i play..
yes mam i will try and follow it thank you very much... also does the slippery back of the violin can affect it to slide? i am using Pledge as cleaner which makes it shine but also smoother which makes it slippery i guess
Well there is your problem - you should not be using furniture polish on your violin - unless you want to ruin the wood! Besides from that, its going to make it slip all over the place as its full of silicone.
oh.. thanks for the information. actually it was the music store vendor here in saudi arabia that tell me to buy that. i will stop it immediately but how can i remove it? wait till it was remove naturally? because there really is no music shop for violin here.. just common music stores where they sell all kinds of music instruments. im very sad i didnt know i am damaging my violin
Just leave it and stop using it. You dont need to clean your violin like that anyway, just remove the rosin from the fingerboard and under the strings with a clean DRY cloth after each use and that will be fine. I dont clean mine, I just wipe the excess away. In the meantime, you could try a leather type cloth as that will have some 'stick' to it as opposed to using a cloth under your violin on your shoulder. You need to experiment as I say in the video as its not one-size-fits all.
Im gonna start Learning with your channel and buy Violin in 3 months and sooooooo happy finding a nice teacher like you easy explaining and also like me i dont like shoulder holding😂🥺😍🥰❤💋 im not gonna go on class because your channel is already complete for teaching me thank you so much♥️💋❤😍
Thank You! It is has been dry difficult to locate a violin instructor nearby. I hope you video lessons and books will assist my teenager within her long awaited desire to learn. She has been asking for years.
30 years old and I've always wanted to learn my violin finally came in yesterday after two weeks of watching how to videos and now the learning begins 🙃 ps listen to this girl and don't cheap out on the violin the months of researching violins to make sure you stick to it if you have to wait a bit to get the more intermediate or professional expensive one do it! Cheap violins shouldn't exist!

I'm twelve . I love violin music and I bought one yesterday . A freind of mine recommended your videos . I hope these videos will help me learn.
This is very good for all the people who can’t pay for violin lessons like me
Hello Alison,
After going around my local thriftshop and seeing some refurbished violins for sale, it just sparked my long last desire to learn how to play the violin that I had since I was a teen, I'm turning 30 this year and I finally decided to give a try after I landed on your incredible channel (wasn't hard since you're the definite violin teacher here on YT).
Thanks!
I was thinking about you redoing this like 3 seconds before it was uploaded.
Playing this instrument is so fun! You guys can do it and I'm proud of y'all for learning
I've been watching your lessons for a really long time even though I didn't have a violin, but now I finally got one :) your lessons are really helpful! They helped me get the hang of the violin really quickly
Hi, I'm a 52 year old guy, attempting to learn the violin. you've been so helpful thus far

Hooraaay! I'm just about to pick my violin back up after 10 years of not playing so these videos are going to come in super handy for refreshing my memory and I'm just in time for the updated videos 😁
I know! How time flies!
I’m just about to purchase my first violin but was really anxious about learning. I came across your tutorials and started watching them and now I can’t wait to start. Thank you so much for making it not seem as scary as I thought 😊

Thank you so much. In the time of lockdown you are my teacher , my guru .
I just started to practice the violin for the long term. I will be recording my practice and hopefully share my progress years later.

cool, i just picked up an el cheepo violin from a used thing place, its only a 3/4 student one with case and bow, but already i am banned from playing in the flat.
Hello Alison, I'm new player, I'm hoping to get good especially at my beginning ☺️👍
Between 10 o'clock and 11 o'clock. I guess thats 45° for us nerds
Actually its 47.382°

Just bought my violin today reviewing your playlist right now it's really helpful.
I've been playing the violin for five years yet I find myself having to watch beginner videos. 😂
I do that too, I recommend Menuhin´s. And Eddy Chen´s.
@Sanaaya Sureka that aint no shame there trying there best
Im 59..it was my bday gift so here i am trying to earn a violin
I PLAY OTHER instruments but this is a new frontier
Lol....no sound....i got it first try.
I realize that I'm 11 months late, but just in case anyone needs this:
Always loosen your bow when you put it away. You don't have to loosen the hair a crazy amount, but enough to relieve tension. Prolonged stress will wear your bow out faster
Watching your revised lesson 1, and learning the bow hold. My fingers aren’t as long as yours to point down far, so adjusting that. Thank you!
My great grandpa played violin. I now own his violin. Thanks to you, I am learning how to play it.
How’s it going
I'm the 3,000 like :>
I just got a violin for my birthday yesterday, and I’m excited to start playing the violin.. My sister also has a piano and will be watching your videos thank youuu!!
How's your progress going?
my goal is to become a ling ling 🙏🏻
I'm 15 and I think I'll have a go at it. Wish me luck you guys.
thank you for the update.. im having difficulty in holding my violin in place.. i get used to griping the violin with left hand.. now that i a correcting it.. my violin slides down :'( i have no shoulder rest when i play..
I do mention a few reasons why and how to resolve it in the video.
yes mam i will try and follow it thank you very much... also does the slippery back of the violin can affect it to slide? i am using Pledge as cleaner which makes it shine but also smoother which makes it slippery i guess
