I got an IC-705 and got some SSB DX contacts on 20m running 10w, using an MFJ 1982MP EFHW. Farthest contact was in Serbia with a 5x7 signal report. When running QRP, it's all about the antenna and band conditions. 73, W4ISB
I'm with you Tony. I like the look and feature set of icom, but I'll never buy one due to lacking APRS. It's too important to not have in the woods in the PNW.
Thanks for checking out the icom d-star handheld for me I do volunteer work with E.O.C. sheriff's office Marion county M.E.R.T. programm and really want to get my hands on one of these radios it would help out tremendously.
Love to get a 705 and try out POTA but I need to get my general. Just having trouble studying because of my disability but I will keep trying. I think making contacts with a QRP rig would be so much fun
I usually attend the SEMA show in Vegas.....but IF the radio manufacturers can create a scanner that can be caught P25-2, I will be at Hamfestj!! My radios are probably useless now because of the HUGE upgrade from ProVoice for the public frequencies, to P25 and its encrypted.....:((((
I'd keep your TH-D74 if you can, it's a fantastic handheld, now discontinued. It wasn't on the market for that long so there can't be that many of them out there. Have you seen the asking prices for a second-hand TH-D74, there's one at GigaParts for $849.95 and that's one of the cheaper prices I've seen. I'll be getting an ID-52 too, but I'm keeping my TH-D74 for the duration.
Hi ! Nice vid! I’ve just received mine today and I was surprised about a thing. When I push a key, just after the beep, I can hear like a white noise. Every time. Does it do the same for you?
Glad they mentioned they haven't been able to innovate due to getting existing product out. I was hoping to get a rumor if they are working on an update to the 7100.
"the ircDDB upgrade" to get around call sign routing. How do we know what D-star repeaters have this upgrade and configuration? Thanks for terminal and access point mode These modes do not work like a hot spot. They only work with call sign routing which means you can't just connect to a repeater or a reflector and have a general QSO. The advertising literature also does not make this clear. Many DStar users are so-used to reflector linking that they have forgotten how to capture a callsign-routed callsign (by pressing the radio's CS button while the other person is calling). A good practice when routing to a user callsign or repeater callsign is during your 1st transmission, remind people to hit their CS button while you are transmitting. Otherwise you will never hear their response -- it won't be routed back to you. Also ask them to unlink any reflector to avoid the reflector users from hearing a 1-sided QSO.
Like I said about the Yaesu FT5DR, the ID-52 doesn’t add anything very innovative over the ID-51. There are a couple features like Bluetooth and image transfer. But honestly, meh. The big three need to step up and add real functionality to their new radios. Why can’t they add multiple digital modes (i.e. D-Star, DMR & C4FM) all together in one unit? How about _true_ 50, 220 & 900MHz support with more than .5 watt output? Maybe wide band receive with LSB/USB abilities? Or even all mode capability? I’m sure disappointed with the offerings being put out.
@@williamlowry9585 I would have said the same of Icom and D-Star, but Kenwood was able to put D-Star in the D74. If Yaesu wanted to have C4FM in more widespread use, then it’s entirely possible that they could release the details. Plus, in the Amateur Service these protocols can’t be completely closed source or they would be considered encryption. I’ve got to say never say never.
I would seriously look at said handheld and determine the cost/benefit as I would any major purchase. But you’re missing my point that the big three are putting out the same tired products with minor actual improvements which means _no_ benefit for the cost in my book.
@Spike S they obviously had to release the protocol... It's literally in the rules for ham bands. Also, if they hadn't, how do you think hotspots work?
The FT-5 wasn't meant to be a radio with more features than the FT-3. It's a redesign of the FT-3 that allowed Yaesu to keep selling a similar level of HT during the chip shortage. They just found a way to build a similar radio with different chips.
@@ko4otv43 no that’s a secondary market (scalper) price for the radios. $500 to $550 USD would be my guess. The Kenwood TH-D74A was over $600 when introduced to put it in perspective.
@@JBinSC yea that's the radio I was going to buy until I saw the price. I recently bought a Kenwood Th-K20A which isn't a new radio by any stretch and it's only a 2 meter rig. But for a $150.00 I couldn't pass it up. It's a pretty solid built unit and great sound quality. I have a Icom 5100a and a 7300 for hf and really wanted the Id52a to add to the collection. maybe some day
@@ko4otv43 the Kenwood TH-K20A is a near commercial quality rig, very sensitive and has very nice audio. It’s been around for a long time for a reason. Great on rail bands too. Triple het beats those direct conversion radios every time. You have D Star covered, the 5100 is a solid rig, full duplex for sats (even AO-27 in D Star).
After playing with APRS and having "DPRS", I realized I do not need the former and that the latter is likely more efficient while using less battery power. If I want the world to know where I am, there is Google, Faecesbook, etc.
APRS is more than just tracking yourself or others. He literally says that all the time on this channel. APRS is an excellent mode for text based messaging off grid.
So over this radio 🤣🤣. December / January?!? Don’t even bother. Meanwhile Yaesu even launched the FT-5. I understand there was a fire, but to be a whole year late? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
micro usb in 2021. as dumb as yaesu on the ft-5d and mini usb. and it isn't even available. when we are able to buy it there will already be a new usb standard around.
I'll be a senior citizen by the time this comes out
we all will lol
And you’re now 50, 60, 70?
Eric, thanks so much for covering the Hamfest for those of us who couldn’t make it this year…you rock!
Great interview! I’ll be patient.
Thank you Ray Novak and HamRadioConcepts for the update !!!

Thats a nice looking radio
thanks Erick
While you’re there, tell every Icom employee you see that they should have included APRS in this and the 705.
That decision was likely made by some product owner far removed from any engineer or worker there (because they’re in Japan)
y tambien el WIFI
They could probably add it with a firmware update with very little effort

Oh, this is a good explanation of how that fire affected product development.
Icom needs to have an iOS app for this and the 705.
Ray be sportin’ a Rolex. Times are good at Icom!
Looking forward to getting an ID-52. Good DX Eric.
Nice to see in the USA
Looking forward to adding the ID-52 to my hand held collection in the near future...

There's no encryption in ham radio.
I think I’m becoming an Icom fanboy.
Excellent info. I’m going sell my TH-D74 and will replace with this unit, since I have the 7300 and ID5100.

Man that's beautiful! I sure hope it's not priced sky high!
Wish these guys would either include 9600 packet OR - some way to do VARA wide with these new radios!
You KNOW it will be !!!
$600-$650 is way higher than I expected. Painfully high. Is it worth it? I don't know....sure is tempting, though.
…..and it is! Way too expensive.

Any updated 5100 info?
Nice............
Ray Novak we’d love to see you at the Charlotte Hamfest!!!
I WANT ONE! :-)
Nice radio. I'd get one but all the repeaters in my area are dead as are all of my ham radio friends. No one to talk to.
D-star= the world :)
Ain't it the truth! And when you do have a QSO, what do you talk about once the weather report is out of the way?
Is this radio field programmable?
It's just a shame that Icom doesn't manage to integrate normal APRS. There is no reason not to.
I'd love to see Icom come out with a dual band MURS/GMRS/FRS portable & 50 watt (2 watt FRS) mobile. The new MURS portable is a good start...
That would be great but I've been told that it wouldn't be legal to put GMRS/FRS/MURS all together in one radio. You can thank the FCC for that.

The 63D will be out before this makes it to the market
Waiting on this…… and the new amp. It’ll replace the Kenwood HT
I may have missed it any idea when this is coming out?
Ray said if he was a betting man, late December or early January.
@@johnhamm8260 ok thanks, I payed for a preorder awhile ago, hopefully that’s the case
