How to Freeze Celery

  • I freeze celery for the convenience and when I can get it on sale. It works very well in dishes that are cooked. Paid $1.88 per bunch June 2013, paid $ .69 a bunch in November 2012, paid $ .50 a bunch at Aldi Grocery Store November 2011. Fresh food prices have really skyrocketed over the last few years. The only answer seems to be "grow your own"!

    Someone mentioned this before, but going to reiterate. I wrap my celery, inside the bag, in foil. It will keep in the fridge for a long time. Since I’ve started doing this, I’ve not ever had any cottony insides. It saves on the slimy celery and you don’t throw it away.

    Just a suggestion for you. When my Mom blanched vegetables from the garden for freezing, she used ice water. For large batches you fill your clean sink with water and ice and then just use a slotted spoon or spider and lift the veggies from the boiling water into the sink of ice water. The quicker you can stop the cooking process the better. :)

    To keep one bunch of celery fresh longer than usual I wrap the celery in aluminum foil. This will keep the celery fresh for 3-4 weeks, so if you need one or two stalks of celery you can save the rest for a good while. I saw this on another youtube channel and tried it and it really works.

    Wasting money Not buying what I needed to my good food for just me. So I started doing this type of thing.
    Celery will last me a month. Fruit for smoothie will last me all month. I go to the store only once a month
    an I make good food the whole time. All of you older people that are having to live on a real fixed income

    Hi Phyllis.
    Another thing you can do with celery is when you cut the bottom off, place with bottom side down in a Styrofoam cup and what will happen is it will start growing roots. Then just plant in some dirt and leave in your kitchen. New stalks will start to grow.
    Have a good evening

    I have to put the fresh leaves in my salad mix. Thought I'd share something I learned a long time ago, about the time plastic bags hit the market. If you have a straw ( plastic, paper, Steele, etc) place it in a corner of the bag. The zip the bag up against it as far as you can. You merely suck the air out of the bag, hold the bag tightly and remove the straw while you firmly zip it shut. This was used before vacuum sealers!

    • @juceelucee2841
      @juceelucee2841 5 лет назад +5

      yes, my mother inlaw always did this. I use a vacuum sealer, I hate when ice forms on frozen items that you can't use up fast enough. I hate throwing away food.

    for all those who think that she is wasting time, money, and water, consider the whole picture. She's not having to use portions of this water every single time she has celery. instead, she is watching a great deal of celery all at once. the amount of water probably equals close to the amount you would have used to clean individual celery each and every time. (Even if jets was a bit more, it wouldn't be that much of a difference. and washing is essential when it comes to a pesticide-ridden vegetable like celery! )
    Have you heard of once a month cooking? it takes 2-3 DAYS of planning, shopping, preparing, cooking, and labeling - which is why many people get together to do this. makes it more fun, and each person has a role.In exchange, she has feed up at least a MONTH of daily cooking, except for asking fresh ingredients, like a salad - which, again, can be prepared for several days.
    THEREFORE, she has freed up her days to be Able to spend it with lived ones, not spending all that time, daily, in the kitchen!
    Before going against this, just do some research. seriously. You would be amazed at the amount of time and resources you SAVE by doing it all at one time.
    she mentioned how she puts celery in meals, right? This step will make those tasks quicker, and with no more running water.
    HOWEVER, I DO appreciate the lessons you guys thought about saving lives. I want to look into some of those myself. address to every bit helps, even when bulk cooking. so thank you!

  • @amykathleen2
    @amykathleen2 5 лет назад +1

    I have a tip to make blanching easier, especially if you're doing more vegetables than your pot can hold, or multiple kinds that you don't want mixed up. All you need is a stainless steel colander or strainer that will fit inside the pot you're using, and if your sink is far from your stove you need a bowl to put under it so you won't drip boiling water everywhere. You just put the raw vegetables in the strainer and put the whole thing in the boiling water. When they're blanched you pull the strainer out to cool and drain your vegetables, and the boiling water stays behind in the pot for the next load. It's even more efficient if you have two colanders or strainers because you can pull one out and put the next one right in, and have a load blanching while you're cooling the last one. Then at the end, like other people have said, the water is still in the pot with all the vitamins and minerals from all the vegetables you blanched so you can save it for any number of uses.

    What a great idea! I had no idea celery could be frozen for cooking. THANKS!❤
    I also never made the comparison between parsley celery, but that's so true.
    I clean my celery and wrap it in aluminum foil, which keeps it fresh and crisp for weeks and weeks!

    Place fresh celery in a vessel of water, cover the top of it loosely with a plastic bag, I use the one it came in, and it keeps crisp and fresh in the frig for a couple months. At least that is the longest I kept mine before I used it all. It may even keep longer.

    I just want to know how you have time to do all this and have a life for you and Mr Bucky too? I’d be so proud of myself if I could accomplish a fourth of what you do then film it to share with everyone. Never in a million years would I have thought of freezing celery but by golly I’m gonna do it coz I never have it when i need it. Bet Mr Bucky thanks GOD every day for that downpour that sent him from the ballpark to the dance that night. He could have danced with me instead and still be wondering what’s for supper tonight. Phyllis you’re amazing and one in a million. Thank you for all you do for all your fans and subscribers!!

    Lol '' I know this video is older ,but I wanted to share your idea .I cube & freeze celery I also cube red,green bell peppers freeze them in large Ziploc bags I noticed bell peppers get really pricey in the summer here in Missouri like $ 3.00 for 2 Outrageous '' I also saw on one of your videos where you cubed and froze onions -- fabulous idea I do this to now very Convention just have to sprinkle it in the pan with the meal your cooking and - Voilà '' its done . But I also learned to double tripple bag onions for otherwise the whole freezer smells like onion HaHa'' anyway thanks for sharing your wonderful videos I've fixed alot of your meals ,and learned alot of new ideas and helpful cooking hints . Helpful for- I work as a cook at Missouri Head Start .

    If you sit the bag in a bowl of water, up to the top of the bag ,just before the opening all the air will come out and then seal the bag and put it in the freezer.

    I have a couple of those knives and I LOVE them! They are great for cutting anything! One way to keep celery for a long time in the fridge is to wrap it tightly in aluminum foil. I didn't know to use my leafs in soups and other dishes!

    Thank you for the great info! Celery always seems to go bad before I can use it all. I've always wanted to freeze it, but I didn't know to blanch it first. Thanks for the video!

    In NE Florida I start celery indoors in Dec and plant out in late Jan. I am now harvesting full heads in late April from my raised beds.

    I grew celery for the first time this year. I bought a couple plants for a $1 on the 4th of July and didn't think they'd do so well but they did. The stalks are small but plentiful. I'm gonna do this for soups.
