The latest Mongoose 2nd Edition is the way to go. Get the Core Revised book. It's much friendlier than previous editions and has consistent internal logic.
Ah yes, the most Fun of the FFG 40k ensemble. There's never been a RT campaign where I've not had a lark at some point- the same, sadly, cannot be said for Only War and Black Crusade (and also Dark Heresy 2E) who had the misfortune of coming out at the tail end of the license and were subsequently gutted for it. Always loved the kind of 'open-endedness' that RT in particular brought to that line-up - yes, you could use it to play Legends of the Imperial Heroes, or you could use it to play Captain Hercules Lucullus Skywalker Master-Commander Poirot. And it's almost always guaranteed to end in somebody chuckling.
I really enjoy how 40k lore today is so immensely different from 2nd and 3rd edition lore. In the handful of times I've considered playing a Rogue Trader game I've only ever wanted to play an extremely juiced lawyer whose ship went missing in the Warp six months after the Emperor first started handing out Warrants of Trade and within a span of about 18 subjective months got repeatedly time-displaced all the way to "present day". As a result he's got the original imperial org charts and private office extensions for half the segmentum memorized and a head full of redacted Imperial history. "I never met the Emperor or any of the Primarchs. I did shake hands with a Space Marine who claimed he was Alpharius in a recieving line once. We all took it for a hilarous joke at the time. Of course this is back when Space Marine armour still had space for a name tag. ...I miss Kevin."
You could review the old adventures in the old dungeon magazines. THE DARK TOWER OF CABILAR, Crypt of Istaris, Black Heart of Ulom, Wards of the Witching Ways, The Vault of Kasil, The Pit, Ironguard, Hrothgar's Resting Place, Elminster's back door, A Wizard's fate, Pandora's apprentice, Horror's Harvest, Gorgoldands Guantlet, The Black Egg, Challenge of Champions, Vlindarian's Vault, Path of Blades, Mud Sorcerer's Tomb Are some of my favorites. You could also review some of the adventures that Gary Gygax wrote for other systems.
felt like I wrote too many comment, but, I would also absolutely LOVE some content on Worlds without Number. Jack Vance’s Dieing earth is one of my favorite fantasy series, and I also own Worlds without number. SOMETHING about a far off future where so much stuff has happened, civilizations rise and fall, aliens came and left, sorcerer kings ruled and were over thrown and now the world is in a pseudo-medieval state with wierd phenomena all over the place from the sear amount of STUFF that has happened, technologically, magically, and by the might of arms, its just super interesting and exactly my jam. Also, the mix between some d&d like mechanics and some traveler like mechanics really hits a crunch sweet spot for me too.
one thing that i like about about The soul Reaver is that it is one of only two books that have battleship stats, this time for Eldar. The other is Da World-breaker
never really got into rogue trader, but a lot of these leads are getting me interested. cruising out and discovering stuff on the edges of known space for the glory of mankind does sound like a really juicy premise.

I have a substantial collection of Traveller books, spanning all the eras since the 70s, and I still cannot possibly claim I have remotely anything like an entire collection. There are books out there that are collectors' items, and I have a few of these. One of them, which I dispute how "sought" after it is, is the Traveller: The New Era main book. It might be interesting to go over that one, if only to see what state of mind the RPG industry was sort-of into (like, the Setting Nuke, among other things). Fire, Fusion and Steel from that line is also a sought-after collectors' item, even though it's utterly unusable as a sourcebook. We don't use grav tanks very often. In point of fact, I know of only one published adventure which features them, and it's not from The New Era. I imagine, by now, if you only stuck with the Mongoose stuff, you'd need a lot of time to do a lot of recording for those. I rather like Mongoose Traveller, and I think they have done a good job keeping the game alive.
I really like the concept of RT(like in terms of concept i think its my absolute favorite) but as someone who has played all the FFG 40k systems i think mechanically its my least favorite, well only when it comes to the player character scale combat everything else is fine. Which usually results in me playing "Rogue trader" with my friends when a game is run
